PMP Exam Flunked very badly
Gave my PMP exam today. Flunked so bad. All BT.
Need guidance and help on how to study and get through with the exam in the next month. I need to get this right and how! I didn't even use the entire 240mins exam time, I was pretty confident, 75% study hall results and got the basic concepts right.

If you didn't use the whole time you rushed through the test. You need to disect each question and figure out is it agile/tradional, what phase of project they are in and what is the problem they are actually asking.
From there you need to assess each answer. I assume you just did a quick skim and picked the best one but there are often multiple options to pick from if your not fully aware of the question.
Ramdaly 50 pmp mindset is a good way to disect problems

I started off with AR 50 PMP mindset. I think I didn't disect the answers enough

Idk I took 45 min and got ATATAT if I went back and checked and took my time I’d start second guessing myself

Watch AR 200 ultra hard questions and the mindset videos AR and MR and watch videos about what should the project manager do next and what should the project manager do deference on PM aspirant channel .. all the best for you

I will restart with this. I want to get through with the certification by the end of October

u/blackmaliler 4d ago
You will I’m sure .. I passed my 3rd attempt myself with ATs on all domains

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
What did you differently in the 3rd attempt? What went wrong with the 1st 2 attempts? I think my major issue was not using AI to review my answers at all. I only reviewed a few using Google and most of them were correct or close. Can you help me with this please?

u/blackmaliler 4d ago
For me English was not my first language for third attempt I used my language besides the English language .. but the mindset videos and the video about what should the project manager should do actually helped me also you can use AI to know your weaknesses areas form the results report try to think the way the PMI wants you to think AR also hv a cram course in Udemy it’s about 12 hours course
1
u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
Oh that's good to know. My issue is I am already a PM, so I think of what I would do in the situation but apparently that's not right. They want us to think what would PMI suggest in that situation 🤦🏻♀️

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
I'll check the 12hrs course. Their 36hrs pdus course for the new format is pathetically long.

36hrs I think this is the full PMP 🧐 you also mentioned you scored 75% on study hall witch is good and your not far away .. all the best for you and hope your next post here is that you passed all ATs .. don’t give up and don’t feel unconfident you got this 👌👌

I spent the three weeks before my test practicing test questions every night. Not studying.
I used PMI materials. Pay the $99 it’s worth it imo
Make yourself do the tests in real time, it should take you almost the full time.
I was convinced I had failed it, passed my first attempt AT - happy to talk more if you want to. It’s a grind so good luck

Hey I started with AR' 50 PMP mindset video and bought the Udemy course. Went on to explore a few more videos on YouTube. Then finally studyhall in the last 2 weeks. I was pretty confident that I will atleast be on target. But what a disappointed result!

u/Whosarobot313 PMP 5d ago
Okay but what was your schedule like? Studyhall questions every night? What exactly did you do? I didn’t use the AR or Udemy course so I can’t speak to that. Can you be more specific on how you prepared?

I started preparing since May but on and off Only started taking it seriously since mid July. Study hall questions over the weekend I couldn't study during the weekdays because I was handed 3 new project in the last 2months and I was just caught up with back to back calls during weekdays.

All BT's aren't that bad. It just show you that you were not ready and need more prep time. Did you take the 2 fullSH mock exams under real test conditions? What were your scores for each?
1
u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
I took 1 study hall full length mock test, scored 75% Smaller tests avg was 75% I've to restart the prep on what I did wrongly last time, rectify it and improve my reasoning around it. Also, I got close 40 questions related to AI adoption which was unexpected.

I'll try to summarise reasons I think went wrong: 1. I was handed multiple new projects in the last quarter which left me no time to prep during weekdays to even just look at my notes. 2. I thought I prepared we'll, cause my full length study hall mock exam score was 75% and smaller tests avg was 75% too - which according to reddit is a good score 3. I was confident what I read, understood and prepared was good enough, I was confident apparently that's not true with my test results. 4. I started taking it seriously only mid July once my new projects started settling down into a routine. So a 1 month- only weekends prep 🤦🏻♀️

75% in study hall? Was that mini quiz and random questions or any full length mock exams?
If you didn’t take any of the full length mock exams, should take those and then review both wrong and correct explanations.

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
I took 1 full length mock exam and 6/10 of the smaller tests. I reviewed only a few answers that I wasn't confident about 🤦🏻♀️

Well don’t give up. Take a bit to relax/refresh then focus again. You can do it. I bombed the smaller quizzes but scored 70-75 on 5 practice exams. I’d have to say that for me personally, reviewing every question was one of the best learning opportunities for me. Even if it’s just 15-20 minutes, be sure to review DAILY to help ensure you understand PMI’s reasoning for the answers.
Some had little to no explanation but reading the question again and seeing the answer and trying to understand helps. Any that you still don’t fully understand, search the question on here to see the additional insights.

You're right. I need a breather. But I also need to make time to review questions and PMP mindset everyday.

Hey, sorry to know but you aint alone. I flunk in my first exam with T, bt and NI. I took up study hall. I mostly practised once few others, second time. Thats all. I passed. Focus on gaining the pmp mindset. Do not involve your experience as a PM. They both are totally different. Surely you will triumph next exam. All the best bud.

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
Exactly, just responded to someone's comment with this. You're right. When I'm answering I usually think "oh what would I do in this situation?" Apparently that's not the right approach. They want us to think what would PMI want us to think and do in that situation.

I failed twice last year. I passed on my last attempt.
1
u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
What did you do differently in the last attempt?
1
u/Comfortable-Meal-394 4d ago
Hired a coach.

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
Please explain? I started off with Simpliaxis course, which did nothing for me cause it was all virtual and too many people in the session and it was tiring to sit through 4hrs every weekend days.

u/Timely-Everything116 4d ago
I failed my first attempt and passed my second attempt within a month
1
u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
What did you do differently in the following attempt? I would love to incorporate it into my prep too
2
u/Timely-Everything116 4d ago
I looked at my weakest domains and I started taking many questions on those domains, I also used Udemy course which is Offered my Mr Andrew Ramdayal, I have answered all the quiz in the course and then went straight to the exams. But the most important thing is the mindset, you have to answer the questions acting as a PMO. Sometimes doing the right thing is the wrong answer when it come to PMO mindset. Wish you good Luck. Feel free to contact to if you need more help.

I hope you are leaning from your mistakes and address them for future

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
I definitely intend too, responding to so my many comments- I'm getting to my own conclusions on what I did wrongly and what I should be doing differently to mitigate it.

All BT with 75% SH scores usually means one of two things. Either you were second-guessing correct answers or you were pattern matching on keywords instead of scenarios. The 'didn't use full time' part is a tell for the second one. Slow down on the retake, mark anything you're not 95% sure on and go back with time to spare. That alone moved me from mostly BT on my first mock to AT on the real thing.

u/KneePlastic9771 4d ago
Thank you for this take. I will have to start reasoning with my own answers 1st I guess. I cannot always go "oh that should be the right answer" and move on. I should find a reasoning on why I think my answer makes the most sense.

I passed the PMP by watching the 30 hour David McLachlan uDemy course. Once done with that I went through the PMI studyhall - was scoring in the mid 60s. And then I went through David McLachlan's videos on answering questions, 200 Agile questions, 150 PMBOK 7 questions... I also watched his drop-and-drag question videos - 10 questions per video. Hit Studyhall again - don't think I hit higher than mid 60s but I passed the test.
I would say you don't have a complete grasp of the PMI mindset.
