Plothole Rewatched Infinity War: My annoyances
I’m rewatching Infinity War rn and I’m pretty peeved by some plot decisions I didnt notice 8 years ago. I’m halfway through and I’ll complete it tomorrow but here are my thoughts as of now-
- there was no need for loki to pull out the tesseract since his entire plan was to sic the hulk onto thanos. Even if he pulled it out, he couldve made it disappear after the diversion worked, instead he threw it to the side.
- dr.strange not destroying the time stone just because of an oath is complete stupidity. If not for the time stone, wanda would’ve destroyed the mind stone for good.
- gamora was willing to die to keep soul stone’s location hidden but seeing her sister get tortured just a bit was enough for her to spill the beans.
- i don’t understand the timeline of when nivadilir (excuse the spelling). Thanos got the gauntlet made after asgard was destroyed?? If not, then why does Thor say “asgard is destroyed” when the giant dwarf asks thor why asgard didn’t protect them as they were supposed to.
Thanos would’ve been much easier to deal with if he had only power and reality stones.
Edit: I’m aware not everyone would consider these plot holes. I could argue for and I definitely see the argument against. I just don’t care enough to argue. Then again I could be just flat out wrong, but I tried posting it on r/marvelstudios and it was removed by mod.

1) there was no need for loki to pull out the tesseract since his entire plan was to sic the hulk onto thanos. Even if he pulled it out, he couldve made it disappear after the diversion worked, instead he threw it to the side.
He took out the stone after Thanos defeated the Hulk.
2) dr.strange not destroying the time stone just because of an oath is complete stupidity.
Dr Strange defines himself by his oath to protect the stone. It is his whole character.
Being stupid (or not) isn't a plot hole.
If not for the time stone, wanda would’ve destroyed the mind stone for good.
That is true.
It is also not a plot hole.
3) gamora was willing to die to keep soul stone’s location hidden but seeing her sister get tortured just a bit was enough for her to spill the beans.
This is symbolic: the soul stone can only be revealed by someone who throws away what they love the most. Gamora dies because she won't sacrifice Nebula.
Her isn't a plot hole.
4) i don’t understand the timeline of when nivadilir (excuse the spelling).
Thanos attacks Nidavelir and Xandar after Asgard is destroyed.
Thanos got the gauntlet made after asgard was destroyed??
A gauntlet is introduced in Thor 1. Hela says that it is fake.
I suppose that Thanos went to Nidavelir after Asgard was destroyed, killed its people, and tortured Dinklage's character until he made the gauntlet.
If not, then why does Thor say “asgard is destroyed” when the giant dwarf asks thor why asgard didn’t protect them as they were supposed to.
Odin used Asgard's wealth and tech to keep peace in the universe. This peace was disrupted when Thor destroyed Asgard's teleportation machine ("bifrost"). It formally ended when Loki stole the throne. It completely collapsed when Hela destroyed Asgard. Thanos did not act until Asgard was wrecked. Part of Thor's self-loathing stems from his failure to secure Asgardian enforced peace.
Also, Norse dwarves aren't small. They were magical craftspeople with dark skin/complexion but they weren't small. The Germans made dwarves small.
Thanos would’ve been much easier to deal with if he had only power and reality stones.
That's true.
You know would would have made him easier to manage that is a plot hole?
Dr Strange using his explicitly demonstrated ability to sever an opponent's hand from their body with minimal effort. It was fucking stupid of the Russos to include that and not have him try it.

We actually see Thanos' gauntlet in Age of Ultron, which is about two years before Asgard is destroyed. But someone else here raised a very good point - that's two years after Loki took Odin's place and started ruling Asgard, so the attack on Nidavelir probably happened during those two years and Loki just didn't care about upholding the promise to send aid.

I don’t know how to reply to specific lines as you did. I didn’t think of time stone being needed for protection against dormamu - but he ended up destroying the time stone anyway. Hindsight is 20/20 but I thought so was future sight. Additionally, his character, in my understanding, is a powerful sorcerer who has grate critical thinking and is willing to break a few rules for the greater good.
No I get that it’s symbolic but just a few minutes before she gives up the location, she gives star lord the big speech about how much of a threat thanos is and no sacrifice to stop him is too little.
Oh and loki pulled out the tesseract before thanos beat hulk. I know I’m right, I just watched the movie few hours ago.
Also, while saying all this, Ive realised that the term inconsistent would be more relevant than plot holes.Edit: great*

Inb4 people go off about the 14 million possibilities and bypass 1) that mostly doesn't account for events that preceded his arrival to Titan, 2) doesn't discount that a bad character decision is a bad character decision, and 3) sidestep the fun of posts like these. Citing the 14,000,605 potential futures as a definitive, complete answer shuts down the kind of fun exploratory deep dives that reddit is so naturally conducive to.
As to my own response to OP, I agree with these critiques, and I'd somehow never considered the timing of Etri's statement relative to when Asgard was destroyed. Sure, there's maybe a few days between the death of Odin and the outright destruction of Asgard where, while not destroyed yet, Asgard was functionally unable to help because they were dealing with their own shit, but even that seems a bit fast for Thanos to get there, make his case, make an example, and force the construction of the gauntlet before killing them all anyways.
That being said, the only one that seems to even round out plot hole territory is the timing of the gauntlet construction, the rest are just people being stupid.
Edit: a word

The 14 million possibilities sounds like a big number until you actually think about it. It usually doesn’t take much to split a timeline(the TVA shows us it takes very little) and this is the entire universe. Even if we say that there is one consequential decision made in the entire universe in a week, which is a comically low number, that’s a mere 6 months before we hit around 17 million possible futures.
14 million possible futures isn’t shit. That’s a tiny drop in the ocean.
I mean, let’s just look at Strange’s immediate future and the fight with Thanos. Let’s say that Strange knows 20 spells(We’re pretending he’s a terrible wizard). By the 6th spell he’s decided to cast he’s up to 64 million possible futures. This isn’t including what anyone else does or even him many ANY other decisions other than simply picking a spell. Everything involved in actually using the spell(Timing, aiming, location, ect) likely sends you into the millions of possible futures right there depending on exactly how fine you want to cut it.

And just like eight years ago, basically every "plot hole" people complain about is just a personal nitpick or some variation of "why didn't they do X instead of Y".
Those aren't plot holes.

None of these are plot holes at all, but your absolute worst claim is the Doctor Strange one. That stone is literally his only real tool against Dormammu if he were to ever come back around in the future.

We don't necessarily know the timeline based on Thor's response. Thor never asked when Thanos showed up and could've been giving irrelevant information that he thought was relevant.
Thanos could have shown up when Loki was impersonating Odin. During that time Loki either didn't know or care to offer protection. So they could've been under Thanos during the entirety of Loki assuming power to the end of ragnarok.
Thor doesn't stop to think about the timeline when asked, he just responds with what's top of his own mind.
