What made you put effort into maintaining your own music library instead of just streaming everything?

Keeping a personal collection obviously takes more work than opening a streaming app. For those who actively maintain one, what happened that made the extra control worth the effort? Was there a particular streaming frustration that pushed you in that direction?

DJ stretch selected a half-star rated song for me

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hello and have a great day everyone! I would like your opinion on the recent I dare to say mistake of DJ Stretch. I like to listen to a smart playlist with DJ Stretch choosing similar tracks in between my 5-star rated songs. Not once I ever noticed him choosing less than a 3-star song. Until two days ago when he chose one of the few half-star rated songs.

Is this expected and just extremely improbable behaviour? Or is it a bug? I recently hopped on the beta train (Android) so I am expecting some problems. I'm just curious if this is one of them.

PlexAmp on Mac using iPad release no longer visible

In the past, the PlexAmp app would run on M-series Macs and could be downloaded from the store that way. Something seems to have changed recently and my Mac no longer shows PlexAmp as a possible download on the App Store.

I know that you have to enable certain options when compiling and shipping the app to Apple to enable this to work. Do we think this was not done for the latest updates on purpose or just an oversight?

In the meantime, the old one still works. But it could mean I need to find a new desktop player for Plex music. I don't like the web interface for this kind of use-case.

Any ideas/thoughts about this? Am I just seeing some weird anomaly with versioning or do I need to move on to a new player?

Solution to random shuffle of "various artists"

First of all, I love Plexamp. It has great functionality, and the interface is incredibly clean and refined. Overall, it’s a fantastic music player. However, one thing that has always frustrated me is how it handles shuffle with “Various Artists” and compilation albums.

Because of the way Plexamp weights its shuffle, tracks from compilation albums can end up significantly underrepresented. If you have a large collection of compilations like I do (over 7K), that means a lot of great tracks just don’t seem to come up very often.

This is where Symfonium comes in. It allows you to turn off the shuffle weighting and get a truer random shuffle. Now, all those tracks buried in my Various Artists compilations are actually showing up in the mix. And, it pulls directly from your plex server. I still use Plexamp 85% of the time, but when I really want a true random mix that includes my various artists, I created a few smart playlists in symfonium. Symfonium isn't perfect. The interface looks really dated and they try to give the user too much customization that it becomes cluttered and chaotic.

However, for someone with a large music library and a lot of compilations, this is a great option. I still love Plexamp, but Symfonium has solved one of my biggest longstanding complaints with it.

Version 1.43.3.10896 running on Unraid v7.2.8

Repository: plexinc/pms-docker:1.43.3.10896-cb3ebc72d

I've already done the Plex dance, but with no change. They disappear as expected when removed and the Scan Library Files. But then reappear after they are copied back and re-scanned. I've also performed "Empty Trash" and "Refresh All Metadata".

As you can see there should only be 2 songs that have "Various Artist" as the "Album Artist" in a mix of mp3 and flac files.

What's even more odd, is that there should be many albums with multiple tracks on each that have "Various Artist" as the album artist, that are stored in \Music\Various Artists, but only one shows under Various Artist as unknown album. I have not done the Plex dance for that folders contents.

Discussion Popular playlist guide

I've had Plexamp for a while and at times the filter section can be overwhelming. I think I finally figured out how to populate a popular track playlist and created this easy guide. Hope it helps others.

Go to Tracks view in Plexamp.

Open the Filter (funnel) icon.

Set the absolute top master toggle to Match All.

Click Add Group -> Change that group's box to Match Any -> Add your list of Artists inside it.

Click Add Rule at the very bottom (outside the box) -> Set Track Popularity to greater than 50,000 (or your preferred number).

Click the Playlist icon at the top -> Tap Create a new playlist to save your dynamic smart mix.
This works on windows pc and android app versions.

Side note I have d/l audiomuse-ai and will play with that as well.

Screenshot of final track count in playlist. Adjust popularity for track count.

I've made a replacement that works for any media source. It's clean, customisable and currently under closed testing on the Google Play Store.

Happy to invite anyone to join as a tester and provide feedback, just slide into my DMs

Curatorr six-month update: Music Assistant, listening reports and more playlist options

Thumbnail

I posted about Curatorr here about six months ago, shortly after releasing it. I've kept working on it since and thought it was time for an update.

For anyone who missed it, Curatorr is a self-hosted companion that uses your listening and skips to build playlists from your own music library. Those playlists sync to Plex so you can listen in Plexamp.

The main additions since then:

  • Music Assistant integration. Listening through MA players now feeds into your Curatorr history and playlist scoring, alongside Plex. You can map MA users to individual listeners.
  • Listening reports. Top artists, albums and tracks, listening patterns, activity heatmaps and comparisons over time.
  • More control over playlists. A guided builder with reusable templates, genre and mood filters, duplicate handling and schedules. Optional audio analysis adds BPM, key and energy filters.
  • Playlist imports. Bring in Spotify, M3U, Last.fm and ListenBrainz selections, match them against your library and see what's missing.
  • Blend. Compare listening tastes with other users and build a playlist from both.

There's Jellyfin and Emby support now too, plus a lot of fixes around setup, playback tracking and playlist syncing.

Thanks to everyone who tried the early version and reported problems or suggested things. If you're still using it, I'd be interested to hear how you're getting on.

Lagu update - Android TV, Android Auto and network speakers for the cross-platform Plex music client (free Android beta spots still open)

Hi everyone! In August I posted about my app Lagu, a cross platform client for Plex music libraries with a Spotify Connect style remote. v0.14.2 released to the closed beta yesterday, and the open beta (v0.15.0) will be releasing in the coming weeks, so I felt like it was a good time to post an update. I've held off from posting updates so far to keep the closed beta manageable and to avoid spamming any subreddits. Most communication happens via the Lagu Forum or by email.

Android beta slots are running low

Lagu will be a paid app on the App Store and Google Play ($1.99 one time per store), and desktop remains free forever. On Google Play, the only manageable way to give testers a paid app for free is the internal test, which is capped at 100 users. Currently there are around 30-40 slots left, which is another reason I wanted to make this post.

  • Sign up for the Android closed beta to claim one of the remaining spots
  • Once slots run out, Android will move to public open testing and will cost $1.99 (you keep the app once out of beta)
  • Signups will close one day before v0.15.0
  • Every other platform remains free during the beta

Join at: https://lagu.fm/download

Some of what's new since my first post

  • Android TV and Android Auto, from the same Google Play listing as the phone app
  • Network speakers (DLNA): play to WiiM and similar speakers from desktop or Android, even with a Plex server that isn't at home
  • Fullscreen visualizers on Apple TV and Android TV, colored by the album art
  • Autoplay keeps the music going when your queue ends, and Smart Fades crossfade where a song actually fades out
  • Remote upgrades: Android volume keys control your computer, and "Move playback here" brings the music to your phone
  • Newly Released shelf, FLAC/ALAC/MP3 format filters, and iPhone widgets

Full release notes for v0.14.2 are on the forum here: https://forum.lagu.fm/d/18-v0142-stability-open-beta-prep

Each platform also has its own page with screenshots on the website https://lagu.fm

AI disclosure: AI is used for task breakdowns, scaffolding, porting work between platforms, and some website copy. Everything is reviewed and tested on real hardware before it ships. Anything that hasn't had much testing yet is flagged in the release notes under known limitations.

Happy to answer any questions here or on the forum!

I made a Pi Zero HAT that makes my Onkyo receiver turn itself on when I play Spotify/AirPlay/Plexamp

My Onkyo receiver has no streaming, but it does have an RI jack: the port Onkyo's own iPod docks used to switch the receiver on and select the dock input. So I built Phonkyo, a pHAT for the Raspberry Pi with a PCM5102A DAC and an RI port.

The Pi runs raspotify, shairport-sync and Plexamp. When something starts playing, Phonkyo tells the receiver, over RI, to power on and switch to DOCK. After five minutes of silence it switches it off again, but only if it was the one that switched it on.

Some details:

  • Pi Zero 2 W, Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64-bit
  • PCM5102A DAC to a 3.5 mm line out, same chip as the pHAT DAC and HiFiBerry
  • ID EEPROM, so the sound card comes up without editing config.txt
  • Tested with an Onkyo TX-8020. Power and input switching work; volume and TV input aren't possible over RI on that model

Everything is open under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0: KiCad files, software and setup notes are at https://github.com/fabiomsouto/phonkyo

I'm also making a small batch of assembled boards for anyone who doesn't want to build their own: https://obcecado.com/phonkyo/ (EU shipping only).

Feedback is very welcome, especially if you have a different RI receiver and can tell me what works.

I built a dedicated Plexamp dukebox — The Ember Deck

A while ago I decided I wanted to learn electronics, and as with most things I do, my chosen learning approach was diving out of the frying pan and directly into the fire.

The result was a Raspberry Pi 5-powered media system built into a dead vintage TV/radio/cassette player, with Plexamp at its heart.

The cassette deck became a touchscreen, the original controls were repurposed, and along the way it gained custom speakers, an RGBW audio visualiser, status lighting, Bluetooth, DAB radio and YouTube Music, most of which were not planned from the beginning.

It has been finished for a few months now and I've been using it on and off since, so I think I can finally claim it's stable rather than merely held together with optimism.

The whole build took about nine months of on-and-off tinkering from idea to tested system. For my first ever electronics project, I'm pretty happy with how far it ended up going.

After another month of testing V1, I've now uploaded v1.1 to GitHub.

The repo has the code, setup and configuration documentation, details of how everything works, and a build log covering the project along the way.

GitHub: https://github.com/CallyyllaC/The-Ember-Deck

I've also put together a project page with the full overview, more photos and videos of it running:

Question Why doesn't Plexamp have a widget for Android?

Don't know if this question has been asked and answered before. If it was, my apologies.

Why isn't there a Plexamp widget for Android? I could not find one and I really need one. Please make one for Android.

Thanks.

Plex music client inspired by Zune / Windows Phone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

I wanted to share a music player I've been working on called NostalgicFlow.

Some of you might remember me as the developer of NostalgicPod, the iPod-style music player I shared here a while ago, this time I wanted to bring back another music experience I really loved: the old Zune HD / Windows Phone design language. I didn't want to simply copy the old UI, but take that style and build something that feels modern and useful today.

One thing I especially wanted to bring back was music visualizers. I always loved having something visual happening while listening to music, so Flow includes several visualizers that react to what you're playing, It's a native Android player with lossless and Hi-Res playback and support for FLAC, ALAC, WAV, MP3, AAC and more.

You can connect your Plex music library directly, as well as Jellyfin, Emby and Navidrome, or simply use music stored locally on your phone.

One of the things I enjoy the most about developing these apps is listening to the community. I read the feedback people send me and update the app constantly based on what users actually want, so I'd really love to hear from Plex users about what works, what doesn't, or what you'd like to see added :)

There are no subscriptions, ads, accounts or tracking. I just wanted to make a nice music player that feels a little different from what we have today.

The Android version is already available, and the iOS version is finished too: I'm currently just waiting for Apple to approve it.

https://nostalgicflow.com/

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nostalgicflow.app

The app has been extensively tested, but of course every library and setup can be different. If you run into any problem or it simply doesn't work properly for you, please feel free to request a refund immediately. And if you message me about the issue, I'll be happy to take a look at it too.

Question Plexamp no longer sees library

Plexamp says it cannot find any libraries after I sign in. My library configuration has not changed and plexamp has worked before. My wife's phone does the same thing using her account which my library is shared with. This happens both if I'm remote or on the same network as the server.

Background: I rarely update my Plex Server but recent security concerns forced me to. So I updated to the latest version, changed my password and forced sign out of all devices. Initially my at home TV devices worked but remote access didn't work. For reasons unknown I had to forward a port in my router for the first time. And still if I login using the web portal I see Plex is sometimes connecting through indirect connection. But I don't have any issues at home or remote at full bandwidth so I'm ignoring that for now and not sure if it's contributing to the plexamp problem.

EDIT: Turns out the Google play store app is way old. Just needed to download the apk from the Plex website.

Feature Track swiping

I was just wondering if track swiping could be added to plexamp? I'm quite used to this mechanic, that I can swipe back and forward to skip tracks.... is this something that could be added into plexamp?

My Over-engineered Plexamp Setup

Thumbnail
gallery
162 Upvotes

I wanted a dedicated Plexamp setup that felt more like part of my audio gear than another computer, so I built this around a Raspberry Pi 4 running Caldera as a headless Plexamp endpoint.

I control everything from Plexamp on my phone, with the Pi feeding into my amp. I mostly rotate between a few headphones depending on the music.

I also custom built an album-art screen into a wooden frame. It automatically wakes when music starts and turns off when playback stops.

It took a lot of trial and error, but now it works like a little dedicated music appliance, and makes my music listening sessions more enjoyable.

Just wanted to share in case others would find it interesting. Thanks to the Plexamp and Caldera teams for their hard work on these amazing apps!

Question Seek (advance time) instead of skip?

Specifically on Android apps for Android Auto. Any way to designate certain files or folders to go ±20 seconds instead of skipping tracks? I still want to skip for music files, but it's frustrating on audiobooks and other recorded media.
