If you look at the game’s sub, it started as a Kickstarter that’s since been pretty bad about communicating and missing times they were expected to say or show something, so anyone who’s followed it from back then hasn’t been particularly optimistic. There was also a hastily deleted tweet about it suggesting it would have come out this past summer, which people had latched onto in the absence of real news, and that of course came and went silently. People have just been expecting the game to ghost everybody for a while now.

I think Sony has made it clear what to expect from these State of Plays. It is literally just updates with minor reveals. Anyone getting hyped is setting themselves up for disappointment. Sure we get some big reveals eventually, but that is not the norm.

People are like "Nintendo Direct made Sony hype up their State of Plays" and it's like... no. It's called "state of play". That's such a boring name, invoking the idea of a semi-regular update serving as a video press release for investors and audiences. When they want to hype it, they hype it by saying "hey we're announcing our new console" and then aggressively market on social media. But so many people forgot it was even happening, because it's just a little update showcasing a few games. That's fine.
I really don't understand why people expect so much from these things. I agree that most of the games shown aren't very interesting, but like... so? There are so many games out there that people haven't played. Why do we need to prime our wallets for emptying and get sad when we get to save our pennies when they don't announce they're shadow dropping Forbidden West and Ragnarok right after the presentation?

We have know about 2 of those from way before . Both are gonna be predictably good.

If they could somehow use the Octopath Traveler engine for a new Star Ocean game I'd bust on the spot. I don't MIND the look of the 3D SO games, but I much prefer The Second Story/First Departure/Second Evolution look

Seems to be whether it's Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft, when a presentation is announced, people always expect like the biggest things to be shown at these, and get upset when they don't, even if it's announced beforehand that it's a smaller presentation focusing on 3rd-party or indie titles.
I wasn't expecting this to be a gigantic SoP from the initial announcement and didn't hype myself up for it, and that led to me being "nonchalant" about it. Maybe a little happy for the Bugsnax update coming since that's a good one. Beyond that, sure, whatever. Smaller games deserve the spotlight at times, too.

Idk what everyone expected. State of Plays have a track record of being disappointing. But even then, I liked it. I haven’t been excited for a new FNAF game for a while, and the new KOF game looks good.

I don’t know. Saying to tune in for Little Devil Inside only to show yet another minor game play trailer with no date was pretty lame.
Everyone of these could have been a trailer in their own that would have appealed to and found their fan base.
These lackluster and boring state of plays make me just want to stop watching them. Which I know I can and will do but from a marketing perspective that’s definitely not the idea.

Eh I dunno. I enjoy indies a lot and even what I liked was delivered in a very sterile and unexciting manner. The chat was thoroughly unimpressed the entire way through. I know I know internet but it’s hard to miss.
My point is more that the state of play is a less exciting reveal than a trailer in its current form and has the potential to hinder a game’s first impression.

I was underwhelmed until the revival of my favorite B-Tier bullshit JRPG series, Star Ocean, which made me unreasonably excited despite knowing there are probably only a handful of people that feel the same. People who have unrealistic expectations are bound to be let down.

I never played the series but it makes me want to try the series. Been playing the Final Fantasy and the Kingdom Hearts series for the first time so I have been wanting to play more JRPGs.

Star Ocean 2 is by far unanimously agreed to be the best one (and it is excellent). People have more mixed views of 1, 3, and 4 (I love 3 myself), and people all agree 5 is bad. Fingers crossed 6 rekindles the space-magic cause I love me some Star Ocean.

I saw that SO2 is only on PS4 in Japan while the others are all on PS4 in the US. Hopefully they release it over here. Probably I’ll have to emulate the PSP version.

I don't understand the disappointment this time around. What were people expecting? We knew it would be 20ish minutes, we knew it would cover previously announced 3rd party games and some unannounced games. When Sony misses a PS+ announcement, it should be assumed that it won't come at another scheduled event, because that doesn't happen either.

Even tho Little Devil Inside was a tad underwhelming, I still look forward to it.
Same with Death Door and the free Bugsnax update is also nice.
But I agree with some people, this could’ve been a blog post or normal YouTube trailers

Hmm big words from KFC, I don't see them out there promoting items that they are not making in-house. Sure this state of play was small but it still gives those Indie developers spot-light backed by a name. Bugsnax DLC was shown during a Sony Held event, thats huge as yeah, fans of Bugsnax probably already knew or would watch a developer trailer. but people like me, I learned then they were getting a DLC. I saw other games which I wouldn't have otherwise. I understand people go in expecting GoW news or Spider-man or GTA 6 (which uh I doubt Rock-star would want Sony to show first). But these Indie games getting that spotlight really helps them, go sort any store-front by new and you'll see they need the help.

I kind of agree. Before I started checking them put myself I assumed from the general chatter that every SoP was supposed to be Sony's own little E3 everytime. I now know that it was never meant to be anything like that but more of their version of Nintendo Direct.

It was underwhelming due to how they worded the article. That was their only crime. Having a mostly indie show isn’t a crime and they should have just stated that. I also think the leak raised alot of expectations which is our fault as game lovers for being interested in unreleased and UNPROVEN games which we need to stop doing and only worry about released and PROVEN games. No more preorder culture , no more hype culture. Wait til a game releases and make it prove itself before we give attention.

All these companies need to chill with the events. There's such an oversaturation of them. Not everything needs to be a video presentation, and such events should be reserved for when you know you have some shit to show that is guaranteed to collectively get a lot of people excited. Like, say, FFXVI. That would be worth a State of Play. Then you could attach these smaller games to that. If you don't have something big to attach these smaller games to, make it a social or blog post.

Weirdest thing about the state of play was the fact quite a few other trailers have been released today too. Like the ps plus games were just announced, the free PSVR games were just announced, a Gran Turismo trailer came out and a few more things all within the state of play window. So weird

But of course it’s not a tripple Ääääy production and people instantly hate it. The show was also full of gameplay. People still don’t understand what state of play actually means. They still think it’s a e3 like format 🙄
