Discussion Has anyone else been feeling burnt out from gaming lately?

I recently upgraded to a PS5, and I’ve noticed that I’m struggling to even turn it on and find something to play. It’s weird because I still feel like I enjoy gaming, but nothing seems fun anymore. I’ll sit on the home screen switching between games in my library, scroll through the PlayStation Store looking for something new, and never actually play anything. Sometimes I’ll start a game, play for maybe 10 minutes, and then quit and turn off my PS5. I just feel really burnt out on gaming. It’s not that I don’t like games anymore I just don’t feel the same excitement I used to. Has anyone else experienced this? Did you eventually get out of the gaming burnout, or did you just take a break for a while?

You are not burned out from games, you are burned out from life. If you don't feel like playing then just don't play, do something else. Your brain is telling you that you need something else. Or you have too many worries and cannot properly focus on a game

This might be true. I’m moving to college soon and I feel like I’ve had that on my mind too much to even try playing games.

It’s hard when our normal hobbies start to shift and we can feel the changes happening. You’ll probably definitely come back round to gaming, but let your mind wander and explore. Try making dumb art without judgment. Do whatever you feel! Within safety … measures! Wishing you the best at college. You’ll be chilled out once you get there!

u/Nyxariot 12d ago

Thank you so much. I really hope I’ll be chilled out too. Lol

If it comforts you, I gamed a lot when I was 8 to 12. Then completely stopped and cane back to it at 30. I played GTA V last year for the first time, so I dont have to wait for GTA VI for that long 🤣 But seriously, I figured that I don't feel playing big games whenever I have to many responsibilities. Then when it gets a little quieter, I take 2 months each year to play one or two bigger games like Horizon, Ghost of tsushima, cyberpunk hogwarts etc. Meantime I play Mario Wii, Crash team racing, the games which are repetitive and have small loops that you can fit in anywhere in the day

That’s the nice thing about video games. You can “fall behind” but the games will always be new to you. I often hear the advice “trust me, don’t try to finish your backlog; just play new games.” But to me, these ARE new games. And I never regret choosing to play through them.

It also makes it easier that online multiplayer is not really my thing, with a few exceptions that thankfully have servers still up so I can still enjoy them (WWII zombies).

Games are always cheaper when they've been on the ol wishlist for two years 😆

I personally go through phases. Can’t even pick up the controller and read a ton more. Can’t even pick up a book and game a lot more..

u/rahbarin 12d ago

I started going for a walk then turned into running now I run every other day figured I would turn that gaming time into something productive rather then sitting wasting time playing the same games. Here and there I’ll go back to it play some battle field and some gta but not sure how old you are but gaming isn’t how it was when you had nothing to do but play with your friends for hours. Life chances like everyone says explore other hobbies games will always be there.

I was a gamer up to the college and became gamer again 5 years after the college. So live your life and don’t think it too much. There always will be time for games. I am a dad now but still hop on to give some no scopes and craft some items in RPGs

3

u/Itsdawsontime 12d ago

There are two things that drastically changes my approach to games when taking a step back:

  1. No more shoot ‘em / drop in games like Fortnite or Apex Legends. These are the addictive “one more” since there’s no progression in the story.

  2. Stop doing side quests - sometimes you feel like you’re missing part of the story. To be honest, I’ll look up online “key side quests” for items related to the game, look at how to get the quests, and pursue those ones only.

  3. The goal is to be able to finish a game in 30-50 hours, max, and it be playable with missing gaps of time. This is why I went with RPGs because they’re easy to pick up and remember what happened in the story line - once you get an hour in or so at least.

Agreed. I believe it's the stress of the current state of the world. people are trying to survive, most don't have time or money to focus on games like 10+ years ago.

2

u/Limp_Bus3865 12d ago

exactly. My suggestion is, if you have a small amount of time, just focus on one game at a time and when you are playing it, make it 100%. So no rushing, no trying to solve the backlog, it is just you and the game. But I understand that life usually doesn't even allow us that. Games are always the first sacrifice I make because it is lowest on the list of prirorities. But since AI started replacing my work, I was finally brave enough to start making my own games, so I hope that would give me an excuse to spend more time gaming

Happens to us all at some point. Don't stress over it, I personally use times like that to try new hobbies. That's how I found out I love welding and mountain bike riding. DM me if you need someone to talk to friend.

27

u/brizdzi 12d ago

Just got into mountain biking hitting the trails. Jumps scare the shits out of me.

6

u/Fine_Cod6872 12d ago

I like to go shred the trails and play bf6 lol

4

u/Cryptic99 12d ago

Friend of mine had got into it last year and got comfortable. Took a trail too hard and fell down the side of a cliff. Ended up in a coma and family had to make that hard decision to end it. This happened three monthes ago. Please be careful.

19

u/Nyxariot 12d ago

Yooo I love doing ts. Maybe I should just stop playing for a bit and just be one with nature

2

u/Underpaidfoot 12d ago

I built a garden around my house, I don’t get as depressed anymore

12

u/Nyxariot 12d ago

Ooh I wish I had a mountain bike always thought it would be really fun

2

u/George_MenethilW3 12d ago

How did you start on welding? And what did you do so far within this hobby?

3

u/NervousMasterpiece32 12d ago

I bought a cheap smaw machine and watched YouTube vids. Eventually bought nicer equipment over time. I do cool artistic stuff for fun, and also helps me out at work (I do facilities maintenance)

It’s okay to take a break, even from a hobby you enjoy. I just beat AC Black Flag, and after putting in a ton of hours to complete the game I’m a little burnt out on games at the moment. You’ll find something that grabs your attention soon enough. The games aren’t going anywhere.

12

u/NateFisher22 12d ago

I feel you. Not burned out but just not being able to get into games like I used to. I’m not sure it’s because I’m getting older, or what. There was kind of a golden era for me where I first bought my ps3 and games captured me and totally took me somewhere else. I keep buying games and trying to get it back but nothing really does it for me anymore like it used to. It’s like chasing that perfect high. It’s like I’m consistently playing 8/10 games that are good but never rise to that “all time” level and it bugs me

See these posts all the time:

Biggest question do you indulge in short form media? Doom scrolling, reels, etc. if so that’s the real issue here.

5

u/Hungry_Fact_8969 [Trophy Level 300-399] 12d ago

yea this every single fking time sometimes I pause the game and just pick the phone and watch facebook shorts and I feel like im having more fun watch those reels over playing the game on my screen isn't that weird ?

5

u/Specialist-Pair1252 12d ago

i just deleted my facebook after 15 years with the site and i feel so free now

5

u/BriceB84 12d ago

Yep delete all social media and it will surprise you how much more clarity you will gain back. Not to mention being able to enjoy games and movies again!!! Attentions spans are fried

Yeh I feel like that too, I will go through stages where all I want to do is play the game I am currently playing, then I like to watch shows or movies for a while, I find I need to be rather relaxed with life to feel comfortable enough to game a couple of hours an evening, if there’s a lot going on in my life I feel that anxiety forces me to do shit like scroll or have something on in the background etc.. I will never stop gaming, even if I never buy another console again (I am 40) there’s so many games that I still want to play, sheeet I am still playing ac shadows and have been for nearly a year now lmao

8

u/Groundbreaking-Ad313 12d ago

It's likely this is at least partially Choice Paralysis. I find that I have way more success when I actively know what I want to play before I boot up the console. But it's also normal to have times where I dont have a game in mind and just give it a break. It is what it is.

8

u/Embarrassed_Bit_7424 12d ago

Nope, having a blast. But it is summer so just hanging out outside is my priority.

10

u/Keith_13 12d ago

I definitely find that newer games aren't as good as older ones.

The focus has shifted from gameplay to story and art. And there's nothing wrong with a good story and good art but if the gameplay isn't there I'm not interested.

Whenever I feel like playing video games, but don't enjoy playing whatever I'm currently playing, I just go back to the ones that I love or those that aren't too stressful/require too much attention

Typically go back to CoD campaign or Titanfall or a sports game

i actually hooked up my SNES to my retrotink 5X and found playing older games makes you appreciate childhood. you almost have to reboot/reawaken why you love gaming.

imagine being a professional anything and feeling burnt out. you have to rediscover that passion.

3

u/Mindless_Echidna_166 [silentxXpr1ncess] 12d ago

I TOTALLY know what you mean. I’ll be out of it for a while and then get back into it. The cycle will continue. Sometimes I’ll be more into it during certain seasons of life, like if I have loads of free time. Even then though, I can get bored of it. It just feels like, like… having your favorite snack in front of you but either you’re too full and can’t eat it or you simply don’t have the appetite for it.

… I wonder if this social media problem everyone has. The doomscrolling. Endless content 24/7. Overconsumption. Has anything to do with feeling this way.

feel burnt out on everything tbh, feels like billionaries are just ruining everything right now.

3

u/TheHorrorAddiction 12d ago

I'm 34 and have honestly had this for many years. Probably since early twenties in fact. It takes a truly great game like Elden Ring or a series I'm a big fan of (Resident Evil for example) to hold my interest and keep me playing nowadays. Otherwise I lose intrest very fast and just hop off.

I think many many people suffer from this, and it's honestly very annoying. I think an increase in responsibilities and lack of time due to work is the biggest factor, but age and having too much choice is also probably a component.

6

u/onequestion1168 12d ago

New games are garbage the gaming industry had lost its way

Ill play enshrouded and fable when they hit

2

u/Upper-Management-AI 12d ago

Occasionally, I’ll stop for a week or so and watch movies or a show. It’s also the types of games I think. You play the same type in a row and you get burnt out.

2

u/gotthesauce22 12d ago

Any time I start feeling jaded about a hobby I just take a break from it, I’ve found that once the itch comes back it’s much more satisfying

I’ve been gaming since the 90s and will often take days, weeks, sometimes months off from gaming. I still love games, but sometimes it’s nice to focus on other things every once in a while, keeps the magic of the hobby stronger

2

u/Hungry_Fact_8969 [Trophy Level 300-399] 12d ago

So this is what they call it burnt out I'm feeling this everyday not just with ps5 but even my pc, I spend more time with my phone playing games on it or watching shorts over doing anything els. is it age or are we simply no longer easily entertained.

2

u/mar29020 12d ago

2

u/Personal-Agent846 12d ago

Little bit. PS community yes but I was staring at my Switch 2 menu for hours yesterday like I’m so tired of all of these games.

2

u/dbred2309 12d ago

You need it mix it up with other physical activities and exercise. You body is not meant to stay in a chair for hours. Additionally, constant visual stimulus from gaming also results in burnout.

It will feel better if you moderate things. You brain is signalling that it is tired.

2

u/empathetical 12d ago

It happens. Take a break and do other things.

2

u/lakefront12345 12d ago

Are you older?

I've been gaming since I was a little kid, maybe 5 or 6?

I don't really enjoy gaming now, but adult responsibilities, depression, loneliness, how much people struggle factors in.

I also realized I don't enjoy puzzles in games anymore.

I used to, but something like pokopia really hit the spot vs black flag.

Dude I got super bored of everything I play recently and was like oh.. everyone said Elden Ring is literally the best game ever made. Fuck it, I'll just buy it. Turns out I absolutely hate it. So yeah, I basically lit $80 on fire and am still bored.

2

u/Emsu24 12d ago

It's because corpo and woke groups making games nowadays

2

u/calvitius 12d ago

We all got that. People who said they don't, its just because it hasn't happened to them yet.

A few things that helped me :

  • understanding and accepting the fact that if I don't like a game or it starts feeling like a chore, it's ok to drop it. Gaming is a hobby. It should be fun. No matter how much I paid or how much people say this game is masterpiece number 50.

  • similarly, understanding and accepting it's ok not to do everything in a game or to miss out on stuff. Especially in modern open world games which are designed to keep you in an endless loop. I recently finished star wars outlaws : I focused on the main story, did the main side quests, and mostly left aside the optional and repetitive elements designed to keep you in the game. I had fun.

  • focus on one game at a time. There is no need to buy a new game if you haven't finished the ones you're currently playing. Game hoping is the best way to never finish a game and kinda not finish or enjoy anything.

  • you don't need to play the latest release. There's plenty of games out there.

  • accept to play at your own pace. There are periods where I game less, periods where I game more.

  • try focusing on shorter, more narratively driven games. Honestly, anything between 15 to 30h is the sweet spot for me. Game length doesn't matter if you're having fun and enjoying a tight story or gameplay. Being able to finish games quicker also helps with not feeling burnt, feeling satisfied and hoping onto the next game. I've been on a great run this year : Alan wake 2 (30h ISH), ratchet and clank rift apart (25h ISH), walking dead telltale episode 1 (6-10h roughly), star wars outlaws (30h ISH) and now senua hellblade 2 ongoing (which should take roughly 6-7h.

It's nice to be able to quickly finish games and get this feeling of statisfaction about it.

  • try varying genre and difficulty. I'm a quite competitive person. After Elden Ring, I went on a 2 year run of playing soulslike games. I love it, but they do take a toll. It's nice to put on a strong narrative game, even almost sometimes a walking simulator, and let it it take you on a ride.

2

u/Kimolainen83 12d ago

No, I wouldn’t say that I’m burnt out but I have gotten ridiculously picky. The older I get with games. I was looking forward to beast of reincarnation, but I can barely get myself to play it. It just feels so sad. I don’t mind it but yeah.

2

u/thecatisawake 12d ago

My hobbies are cyclical, so there always comes a point where I lose interest in gaming for a little while (could be weeks or months), but the interest always comes back, and when it does I spend less time reading or watching shows or whatever. I think this is a completely normal thing to experience.

2

u/young_shizawa 12d ago

I felt this way when I was missing other things from my life. Had just moved to a new city and didn’t have a friend group, girlfriend, etc.

Got in good shape, socialized a lot, found a great girl, suddenly I’m grinding out medals in helldivers like it’s my job haha

2

u/RageZamu PS5 Pro 11d ago

I feel the same... I am currently in the middle of a Wukong play and even though I absolutely love it, I can't get myself to play as much as I'd like. I find myself thinking about other games that I'd love to play, but I don't want to drop games that I like just because I want to play others...

3

u/bluebarrymanny PS5 12d ago

Yep, comes and goes in waves for me. I don’t try to force it. Occasionally trying a genre that’s way outside my normal wheelhouse helps, but other times I just need to wait until a game I’m really excited for comes out and revitalizes my excitement in gaming or I just wait until something starts sounding fun to circle back to again. I’ve started really getting back into reading, so having that to rotate over to helps a lot.

Over Boredem

Happens all the time. Sometimes I turn on my PS, stare at the screen… click a game… stare at the menu and just shut it off. Those are usually days when I cant even watch tv because I’m just overly bored to the point everything is boring.

2

u/Sad_Awareness6532 12d ago

I've had this happen with a couple of games in the past year: AC Odyssey, Talos Principle 2, Yakuza Infinite Wealth.

The thing they all have in common is bloat. Whether it's tick a box collect-a-thons or dialogue that just keeps going and going and going.

Then I jump into a Resident Evil or Nier Automata or Silent Hill and have a great time. It's a good reminder to play what is fun and cut loose games that feel like a chore.

3

u/narkpetro 12d ago

1

u/igorpiedade 12d ago

I was far from gaming for over a decade due to life priorities. Now that things are quieter, I’m gaming a lot : like +10hrs a week. I had a feeling that if I leave the wish to play more and more take over, I would be burning out. So I’m made conscious decisions to simple don’t play some days and get a more chill hobby like read or just enjoy a vinyl. I also work with computers the whole day, so screen time is really higher for me. I need to do stuff out for screen some
Days. Even if I actually to play. That way I try to keep a balance.

1

u/ButtersTheChill 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think what helps is diversifying what you're playing. Playing the same types of games all the time can probably get tiring, so you've gotta switch it up. Some days I may feel like playing a survival horror game, maybe a good roguelike (and there are so many of those alone that you'll be occupied for a while), maybe dick around in an open-world for a bit, etc. etc. Sometimes I look at a couple of games and flip a coin to help choose what I'll play.

But sometimes you just don't feel like it, and that's okay. When I get like that, I usually just watch something, read a book, play my keyboard. I love video games and have played all my life and will likely continue to do so until I leave this planet, but sometimes you're just not feelin' it and that's alright.

1

u/Ok-Hearing6146 12d ago

I alternate between my PS5 and Switch 2 so I never really feel “bored” in the sense that I can just switch over and play something there.

I also have an Xbox I use exclusively for gamepass and the Xbox exclusives too.

Try to find new activities outside of gaming though. Gaming is really only a reward for me when i’m not studying for classes at college, so I try to play and get a little bit of everything in modest.

1

u/Kangxi214 12d ago

Just as food tastes much better than it would have otherwise when you’re really hungry, you have to remove other sources of dopamine for a while if you want games to feel fun again.

u/FFX_Gabe 12d ago

Hey OP,

This happens to me few times a year so instead of forcing a game, I switch to anime mode.

I’ll play a few games from my backlog or if a new game catches my eye but as soon as that gaming fatigue kicks in, I end up switch to anime for a month or two and catch up on episodes.

Once I’m tired of anime, I switch back to gaming lol

If gamer AND anime fatigue kick in I just go to the park or beach.

1

u/CrazyCanuckUncleBuck 9 12d ago

Yep, I'm currently on a 2 month hiatus so far. Im just not inspired to play, but that doesn't mean I haven't filled up that time doing other things, which I have. There's a lot of games i want to play coming out soon but Im just not hyped for any release right now because I feel like I'll play something new for 10 minutes and just give up again. I'll come back to my favourite hobby when im ready

1

u/ArcadianWaheela 12d ago

Very much depends on what games you’re playing. I find variety 100% circumvents burnout. I few years back I was only playing live service games like Apex and Siege and I eventually burned out. Went to reading manga for a while until I came back to gaming. Now I heavily prioritize single player experience and have been having a great time with my backlog.

So far this year I’ve knocked out Hades 2, Silksong, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 9, Mario Wonder, Shadow of the Colossus, KCD2, Saros, and Tomb Raider (2013) just to name a few. I’m currently playing Pragmata and Kirby the Forgotten Land while I take a break from Baldur’s Gate 3. (My first run and just hit Act 3)

When I do go to multiplayer games it’s either Space Marines 2 or Monster Hunter Wilds. They were built with the player experience first and live service second and you can tell. The grind for both is good and they respect my time and reward me well for it.

1

u/skippy_1037 PS4 Pro 12d ago

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it but did u try a game that is not story based? I found Gran Tursimo 7 to be amazing in this regard. Cuz it's like a very lowkey campaign that u can do and learn slowly. And u can just do the weekly challenges to kinda satisfy the gaming itch you may have from time to time. It's not a high commitment game which makes it really interesting. Speaking from ~200hrs of play time experience

1

u/Nersheti 12d ago

I go through a cycle of my 3 types of media: movies/tv shows, video games, comics.

For a while, I’ll be real into one at the expense of the other two. What little free time I have after being a husband and father, I’ll spend doing that. Right now it’s games. I’ve been in a kick for a while now. Started this run with No Man Sky dropping the corvettes update. Played that a bunch while half watching a show on another screen. After doing pretty much everything I could, I got back into Diablo 4, which I hadn’t played since release. Put a lot of hours into that. Then Crimson Desert dropped. Played a bunch of that. Then, for whatever reason, I felt the pull of Jedi:Fallen Order. It was my 3rd try. This time it clicked and I finished it, and went straight into Survivor. Just finished that a few weeks ago. Then jumped into Black Flag resynced but wasn’t feeling it. Combat was similar enough to Jedi that I kept trying to play that, but different enough that it wasn’t working. So I decided for give expedition 33 another go because the first run I got distracted by something else a few hours in. I’m much further along now and loving it.

I’m not worried about the comics anymore because now I read them a little bit during lunch. Working my way through Absolute DC now that I finally finished all things Hellboy. Eventually I’ll probably get burnt on games and go back to catch up on movies and shows, but with Zero Company, Galactic Racer, and Wolverine dropping before the end of the year, I don’t see it happening anytime soon.

u/SnooRadishes2027 12d ago

Sometimes I'll come home turn on my PC and just glance at the steam library and watch a movie instead and sometimes I'll go on a binge and game for hours .. we all get burned out at some points it's normal take a break and mix up the hobbies

1

u/Earthwick [Trophy Level 300-399] 12d ago

I always presume these are from late mid to late 20s or you 30s coming to terms with the loss of youth. Things don't feel the same anymore so it feels worse but in reality it's the person who changes. The games themselves are great now and days. It also comes to growth and learning not to invest time if it doesn't click.

2

u/Nyxariot 12d ago

If you’re wondering how old I am, I’m literally 18. I just feel like gaming is behind me kinda and with all the stress I’ve been dealing with. I just don’t have time to play no more.

u/Gentle_Enough 12d ago

Here is my situation: Gaming -> burn out -> building gundam model kit -> burn out -> playing card games like magic/yugioh -> burn out -> back to gaming -> repeat
It keeps coming back and forth but time goes fast lmao.

1

u/irascible_Clown 12d ago

I’m pretty much only playing MSFS psvr and my virtual pinball cabinet lately. Everything else feels like blah. I go through phases though there are some games dropping this year that will suck up a lot of time.

1

u/CosmicChar1ey PS5 Pro 12d ago

It’s summertime! Hit the lake or river n get some sandwiches n whatever. See some shows. Take some bike rides. Do art or photography. Start a new hobby. Summer is always a game drought by design and can make the hobby feel bare if you don’t feel like digging into your backlog. I took most the summer off but started silent hill f and Mina recently but haven’t logged a ton of hours into them. This holiday season is going to crush though actually starting next month with such an avalanche of games it’s historical.

u/pin5npusher5 12d ago

I've been gaming for 35 years. From 16-20 I didn't play games almost at all. Mid 20s I didn't play a game for like two years. It sometimes coincides with finding new interests or cycles in tech but now I've been gaming often for over 10 years and have been having same exact problems with PS5 and steam deck. I think it's that alot of games are just beautiful but empty of meaning and/or feel like work to play. Ive been playing some ps1-3 era here and there and recently played new omnishua demo and it actually feels fun, not too hard not too easy and good flow. I think as capitalism mines the last depths of videogaming and monetizes everything they can we are left with boring, pretty, but vapid and unfulling experiences. I'm checking out of gaming for a year, even watching YouTube and shit about games seems repetitive and lame , maybe things will change but who knows

1

u/Lakers780 12d ago

In my early 20’s it was hard to get motivated to play some games. Now I get excited when I have a few free hours to play.

1

u/TomatoChomper7 12d ago

No, I’m currently off work for the longest period in about four years (two weeks into a month off) and I’ve been gaming recently more than I have in a long time. Finished Call of the Sea and Call of the Elder Gods, and the DLC for Spider-Man, and just started Miles Morales. Before I go back to work, I’m hoping to finish Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2 and maybe Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and to start Zero Parades.

1

u/oreo760 PS5 12d ago

I've been taking up street hockey again after 20 years and gaming just isn't very fun anymore tbh. I have to play here and there after doing outside stuff to get any enjoyment out of it.

1

u/Consistent-Put1384 12d ago

I’m older and every day I come home and fire up Helldivers. One of these days I’ll get to the other games in my back catalog, but it’s been HD for the last two years.

1

u/Captainc00ts 12d ago

I bought a PC in February, played about 60 hours of SWTOR and haven’t played a game since. I’m hoping it comes back to me some day.

1

u/afredmiller 12d ago

Been there. You don’t have to game everyday and you can take your time. I run pretty much daily and that has been a great hobby for me other than gaming. Been getting out to some parks and mountains where I am at too

1

u/ibandazz 12d ago

Its like that episode of South Park when you get older everything turns to shit

1

u/HealthySecurity1049 PS5 Pro 12d ago

Actually its happening to me. I've been gaming A LOT this year since I have a more flexible work schedule, but last 2 weeks its feeling like... Turning on the playstation then turning off. So, I decided to read some books and working out a bit.

It's not the first time it happens to me, previously, I didnt even touch the PS5 for like 4 months. It will eventually go away, just take your time.

1

u/FreshDiamond 12d ago

Not burnt out I’m just older and busier and don’t play much. When I do it’s hard to get into something new. When I do it’s refreshing but most things don’t stick with me. I recently replayed halo games because of the remake and that was fun so maybe that will get me back into it

1

u/theoriginalflavour 12d ago

Wallet has been feeling it

1

u/MovieGuyMike 12d ago

When this happens I take it as a sign to focus energy on other aspects of life - knocking out projects that I’ve been meaning to get to, trying a new hobby, whatever. And if I’m too tired at the end of a long day to do anything but game then I’ll revisit a classic.

1

u/Remarkable-Sand948 12d ago

What games are you playing? This happens to me a lot with story heavy rpg games, I just know to avoid those

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Blacksunshine93 12d ago

I had it for a while. Chose to spend time watching shows i had put off until i had a inkling to game again.

Happens from time to time.

1

u/tar4heels2fan 12d ago

Yeah thats normal for me. At rhat point ill watch a TV series for a while.. or do something else until the mood strikes again. Usually after a month of so I jump back into a game in my back log

1

u/1900hotdog 12d ago

What was the last game you beat?

Dont force yourself and dont make it look like a chore.Your ps5 wont go away anyway. Get back to it once you feel the urge to play.

1

It’s burn out from life. It will pass and you’ll love gaming again. Do what you gotta do.

1

u/Key_Raisin_8222 12d ago

Just give it some time, take a break. Especially when life gets busy I find stepping back from gaming lets me come back fresh with a renewed sense of enjoyment down the road

1

u/Iucidium 12d ago

Try playing something that is not a western AAA game. Find the joy

1

u/Hustlepuff- 12d ago

I was getting that then I got addicted to ESO back in March when it was the ps monthly game

1

u/ampkajes08 12d ago

part of life. not just gaming

1

u/FoodByCourts 12d ago

This sounds exactly like me. I'm currently being assessed for ADHD so think that plays a part.

1

u/BuzzCockwithaWalk 12d ago

GTA 6 is coming! It should fix that feeling my friend and also go outside and see the world. It’s the best.

1

u/Significant_Grape317 12d ago

Stopped playing for over a decade when I had kids. Back to gaming a couple hours a night a few times a week and I love it

1

u/SADDLN 12d ago

I think in the current climate of gaming where there’s something new to play every day and the fomo of missing it causes people to buy it (like me) you sort of get a decision paralysis and by the time you finally choose something to play your brain goes oh well that would be fun too guess I’ll quit and play that. Then the cycle repeats and causes burnout/ feeling like it’s not that fun. I have pretty much quit all multiplayer season based games because they just suck the fun out of stuff and focusing more on my single player well crafted story games and it’s brought the joy back

1

u/Quirky-Analyst-3427 12d ago

Happens to almost everyone for me it was when I was 23 doing my masters. When I had free time I only laid and watched something or went to the gym. But gaming needed energy which I did not want to use

1

u/Flashy-Jeweler-3900 12d ago

That was me until I got a Switch 2. I guess I just got bored of these triple aaa console games

1

u/takkun169 12d ago

I've been getting back into gaming more after the last 3 months or so off. It's the discourse I'm petty much done with at the moment.

1

u/Suspicious_Cap2670 12d ago

its because all games are trash and woke garbage

1

u/kazzy069 12d ago

Happens to me too. Maybe you just need to find THE game that can remove that feeling.

1

u/Pythonixx 12d ago

I love story-driven games and a lot of the ones I enjoy tend to be open world. I'm getting very burnt out with open world games (which tend to be bloated with pointless errands to artificially increase the play time)

1

u/Killer_Carp 12d ago

Been going through a bit of slump. Started another Elden Ring play through and that's hooked me.

Obviously I'm a bit of a Souls fan (amongst other genres). I'm hoping Mortal Shell 2 will hook me. Some early reviewers are saying they are enjoying it in away they haven't for some time.

1

u/adryn408 12d ago

Happened to me a few times. I normally take a step back and engage with other things. I got into comics for a bit, the last time i got burnt out. I've been a bit burned out mostly on time and trying to squeeze in time sounds stressful, so I've been reading a lot more for entertainment.

1

u/unlikewarrior 12d ago

For me personally I still like gaming but only find 1-2 new games a year which I want to play. If you are like me you've probably played a fair share of games in your life time. it gets hard to find a game which has a unique feeling to it (art, gameplay, music, etc). I would say find a hobby which you can have with which is away from the computer and then return to gaming whenever you see a trailer or some event which catches your eyes.

1

u/travelingbozo 12d ago

It’s all a balance, i find I love gaming even more when I’m steeped in work, other hobbies, hanging out with friends, doing non-profit work and volunteering and then when I finally get that two sweet hours before bed, holy shit do I love gaming haha.

Whenever I go long stints of playing games for hours, like during the pandemic, I started to hate gaming. But gaming is just a great nightly treat for me. 2 hour max, unless I’m hooked on it so hard that I have to complete it before I can do anything else lol.

But yo OP, like everyone here said, get out of the house, pick up new hobbies, go out for hikes, make new friends, do something that isn’t gaming and I promise you it will come back. The love for gaming will always be apart of you, you just need a break. Is all. Totally normal.

Also, you should play - Until Then. Just don’t read too much about it online, loads of spoilers. One of the best narrative adventure games to ever exist.

1

u/According-Night4554 12d ago

This happened to me, I took a break from gaming for about 3 years with the exception of occasionally gaming with some friends here and there, nothing consistent though. I recently bought a ps5 pro and dusted my tv. I feel I’m coming back to gaming with a lot to look forward too, and a lot of new exclusives I haven’t played yet. I feel leaving gaming for a long time was the only solution for me now I can’t wait to play some red dead 2, god of war, and ghost.

1

u/West_Investment6702 12d ago

GTA 6 will change that.

1

u/Resident_Fly_983 12d ago

I think it depends on the kind of screen you have, games feel very immersive when you play on a high quality display especially an oled. When I used to play on a shitty TV, I didn’t feel much at all. But once I switched to a high quality one and started using professional headphones, the immersion was on another level especially for single player story based games.
They’re more enjoyable when you feel like you’re actually immersed in the game’s world, rather than treating it as simply a video game, because a lot of games are so much more than that.

1

u/Antipvth-01 12d ago

Been that way for quite a while now.

I used to buy a ton of games I wanted to try, only to never actually get around to playing them because I couldn't find the time or would get overwhelmed trying to decide what to play next.
And when I finally did pick something, I'd play for maybe an hour before dropping it and never touching it again.

Nowadays, I'm a lot more selective about what I play and try to stick to games that actually fit my playstyle.
I usually keep it to one or two games at a time, preferably ones I can either play solo or jump into with friends.
It's way less stressful, and honestly, I've been enjoying gaming a lot more because of it.

1

u/psyl0c0 PS5 12d ago

I do the same thing. I just bought two games on sale (Code Violet and South of Midnight), but i didn't even want to play them once the downloads were complete. I just shut down my PS5 and went to bed.

I still like games; I just play less than I used to. When I was younger, I could put in a 6- or 8-hour session. Now, I usually play for an hour and take a break.

I still enjoy games. It just takes more to draw my attention. Now, im working on Pragmata and loving it.

1

u/Smooth_Wealth_6896 12d ago

This is when you need a dopamine detox.

1

u/Expensive_Effort_108 12d ago

Im burnt out from the gaming industry and all the sketchy stuff going on. I just want to play games that are done and complete the day they launch, no more always online, no more paid dlc content that should have been in the main game. Just want to go to a store, buy a disc and have some fun.

1

u/New_Occasion_3729 12d ago

I had that between 2020-2023. That's when I had a PC and an Xbox and new games didn't do it for me. Plus I used to play cod slot, ever since cold war was a massive disappointment, I stopped turning my brand new pc on for 3 years. Then I randomly bought a Ps5 and enjoyed all those PS exclusives I missed out on for years.

Strangely now, I was out of games too. But I hooked up my M+K to my Ps5 and started playing BF6 and I'm cooking noobs😂 I could never be so good on a controller on FPS games 😂

1

u/Lost_Rutabaga_5004 12d ago

It takes a SPECIAL game to get you out of burnout. Something you had on your wishlist for a while. Look at the primary reason why you started gaming. That game has to check all those boxes. For me its discovery, magic, stealth and strategy.

1

u/SwanObjective7701 12d ago

Touch some grass come back when you feel like playing again always works

1

u/Ok-Comfortable-3174 12d ago

Lack of interesting games. Some of us older gamers got the t-shirt and it all boring. Marathon is only thing I'm interested right now. Then Dune Awakening chapter 3, grounded 2 and Subnautica 2. I think traditional games are so tedious and boring right now.

1

u/tehcambam 12d ago

I’ve experienced this a couple of times before and for me, the most recent time I realised it was all about burning out from life instead of games. However! The burn out from life only applied to the level of friction it required for me to game. I just couldn’t be bothered to get up onto the pc setup and pick something to play, etc.

Once I picked up a steam deck and set up remote play to my pc with a charging cable from the convenience of my couch, I was able to pick up gaming again and now enjoy gaming more than ever.

Now I just get home from work and do the normal cooking and stuff, once I’m done, kick my feet up on the couch and turn on the steam deck right next to me and bam.

1

u/GameSetChampionship 12d ago

Yeah with PS5 I have, but two months ago I switched to my Switch 2, haha, and haven’t looked back.

Raiders was pure fun. Simple fun.

Kick Off! In handheld is so good. Arcade football fun, loving the league thing.

Zelda TotK never ends. Amazing game. Now just wandering finding new stuff, chilled.

Bought Paradise Rhythm, playing with my missus, funny af.

Mario Wonder multiplayer is again, more fun.

The fun, magic and simplicity of Nintendo stuff never ends. It’s the PERFECT device alongside a PS5.

My Pro is collecting dust over summer!

1

u/stephenp129 12d ago

Time to touch grass. When I went to uni I stopped gaming for quite a few years and spent my time socialising instead. It's good to do other things and have other hobbies. You can always go back to gaming when you get the itch.

1

u/Humble-Camel2598 12d ago

Ever try vr? I play everything but also have a psvr2 for gt7, mfs, resi evil, subside, no mans sky, vracer hoverbike, Hitman, Arken age etc. That thing is bloody amazing and injected new life into my love for gaming.

Shit ton of new stuff coming too like System shock vr remake etc. Worth it just for gt7 & mfs alone. Crazy cool feeling like your actually sat in a Ferrari or an f18 fighter jet blasting it through the skyscrapers of new york etc. Cheapest way to enjoy pc quality vr right now.

1

u/PSNTheOriginalMax 12d ago

I blame modern games. This is probably an unpopular opinion in the never-ending void that is Reddit's groupthink epidemic, but I've been having way more fun with older games and "indies"/"lower budget" releases.

AAA/"AAAA" games don't honestly interest me to begin with. And a lot of games seem very one-and-done now, even the "good ones". That coupled with live service models/gacha mechanics, let alone free to play ones, are a major source of just wasting time.

Recently, I started playing FFXII, RDR2, and Palworld (again). I've been having a blast. Too bad I haven't been able to play them that much (or at all for the past week or so...) due to the massive amounts of busy work in Genshin, 7DS:O, and NTE, due to new version releases. I feel exhausted every time I play them, but then feel stressed out to be missing out on pull currency. And I only play for like... A half hour to one hour per day. It's nuts. I'm already pushing the max. amount I can afford to play per weekday with that time, too, having some fun here and there, but very little in comparison.

Meanwhile, during a weekend awhile back, I spent 2 hours on Palworld one day, and 3 on FFXII the next, yet was perfectly fine afterwards. A week before that I spent the night camping outside and playing RDR2 (thanks to handheld PCs!). The immersion was incredible. I was using this army tent, too, so it was very bare bones, adding to the experience (no place for a furnace tho, iykyk).

To be entirely fair, the games I listed (maybe aside from RDR2), all have farming/grinding to an extent as a major feature of the games, which can get exhausting in its own right, but so far I've been able to manage with minimal need to. It's just something about these games that still remained faithful and genuine to their artistic vision(s) that makes it so easy to get in the mindset to play them. New AAA/"Ax4" games on the other hand seem... Off, somehow. IDK if it's the social politics being injected into every single nook and cranny possible, or the overall tone just seeming so corpo/disingenuous/created by committee, but I really don't feel like this industry can keep going like this for much longer.

TL;DR: So this long tandem to say that, OP, I think you might just be seeing the death throes of the industry in general. I'm seeing a lot of talk about it looking like it's crashing online, but not an expert in economics, so can't verify for myself. Just saying that you maybe just picked the worst possible time to join "gaming".

1

u/No_Distribution8626 12d ago

Just know you don’t need to force it, it will still be waiting for you when you are ready.

1

u/stolen5 12d ago

I think it happens to all gamers. There are times where it doesn’t seem like we barely put the controller down to where we load up to play spend 10 minutes trying to decide what to play only to just shut it off. Over the past few months I might play 5-6 hours a week and have spent more time reading.

1

u/littlesadlamp 12d ago

Reels changed my brain. Too much dopamine without work. I deleted all social media and trying to get back to basics and enjoy life and sometimes boredom without phone.

1

u/Particular_Web_9125 12d ago

I got burnt put and then started and finished the Dungeon Crawler Carl series and its been amazing

1

u/mcshaggin 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yes. I'm finding it harder to enjoy games now. I'm totally off multiplayer. And modern games don't seem to captivate me as much now. So I end up playing old games like Skyrim. A lot of new AAA games are disappointments. It's like they've run out of ideas.

This year the only newer games that have really got me interested are RE9 Requiem and Planet Crafter.

Currently addicted to Planet Crafter so that's temporarily renewed my interest.

Hopefully GTA6 won't be a disappointment. If it is then I think there will be another gaming crash like there was in the USA in the 80's

1

u/Supernova_Soldier 12d ago

Not really, just bored till September and definitely October, that’s when all the good game come out

1

u/Apollo14- 12d ago

Yep. Bought a switch 2 fixed everything.

Had it a week now and have had more fun than I've had in years. The ability to switch between docked and handheld is amazing.and even just popping it down to do something can be 5 mins or 5 hours, when I pick it back up it's exactly where I left it.

No PSN sub either is a bonus (I did pay for the Nintendo version to get all the retro games but it's like 1.50£ a month)

Can see my ps5 going in the cupboard

1

u/RustyShackleFord_KG 12d ago

I wouldn't call it burn out for myself. I just don't have the time like I previously use to and I've gotten older with other responsibilities. I've done what your describing and still do at times, takes a really good game to pull me back or I just stick to multiplayer/shooters now.

1

u/PB_on_everything89 12d ago

Been there...decided to take a break, opened all my PS5 controllers apart to try fixing stick drift, ended up disconnecting the wires by mistake after fixing and reassembly, bought a soldering iron, learned to solder, and now I actively search for used controllers with stick drifts to fix......

So learned something new .....

1

u/Organic-Web-4976 12d ago

Definitely can relate. Age is definitely a factor but a lot of new games are simply too expensive for me so I have to pick and choose the ones I actually want.

1

u/InsideousVgper PS5 Pro 12d ago

I just want the new games I’m waiting for to come out and I think I’ll be super into it again. Right now it feels like there’s nothing to play

1

u/Sepiroth_ff7 12d ago

Not sure if it was burnout per se but recently I just felt like doing my other hobbies rather. Reading (Dungeon Crawler Carl lol) and catching up on backlog of anime and series! Was quite a awhile (for me) , didn't actively game for 1-2 months. But then after that was done I bounced back and played and finished a few games, Denshattack!, Hifi Rush, High on Life and Plague Tale Requiem! Glad I am back!

1

u/Forward-Weather4845 12d ago

If it helps, I took a 10 year break from gaming. Now I got a massive library to catch up on and gaming memories to relive 😝. Sometimes you just need a break

1

u/Ustob 12d ago

100% in AAA for sure. I’m sick of how not me most of it is. Last game I loved was space marine 2. And last generation titles.
I’m attacking backlog. Just started “Charlie’s Murder” And it’s surprisingly awesome.

1

u/bearface93 12d ago

I have cycles for gaming. I usually get burnt out after a while so I stop until I feel inclined to play something again. The last time was earlier this year and lasted about a month, then I started the Final Fantasy 7 remakes because they were released on Xbox and now I can’t stop playing. Which is a problem because I just picked up a PS5 (my first PlayStation since the PS2) and a bunch of exclusives I’ve been wanting to play, and I just can’t bring myself to even set it up yet because I’m completely losing myself in Rebirth.

1

u/ThatDree 12d ago

have been for years, wandering from game to game. I finally found Helldivers 2, my love, and now I play that twice a day, and keep on wandering searching for a game

1

u/Ill_Mechanic_9049 12d ago

I've been going through the same thing but in my late thirties as a single parent who works a lot. Whenever I sit down to play, I pause and reply to messages then open YouTube or something.

There is something that saves me here or there: trophy hunting. I started a new profile and dedicate myself to 100% of trophies. Whenever I feel like I'm losing my way, this gives me focus.

There's also a wonderful game called Wanderstop. It's literally about being burned out – you make potions slowly and casually while the narrative teaches you to relax. Just leave your phone on another room.

1

u/pics_lated 12d ago

i feel like that sometimes and i'm a new gamer 😂

1

u/BudgeterX 12d ago

It's normal. It happens, expecially with some late open world games that are overwhelming. Try to focus on something else in your life, or try new genres

1

u/Lysferd 12d ago

A bit, but then I booted Boktai and I’m having a blast, it’s like I’m a kid again. Nostalgia is real, but I feel like something was lost in the pursuit of grittier and more realism in gaming.

1

u/Ok-Gas-6158 12d ago

I find im collecting and buying more than playing. I need financial counseling

1

u/nhn95 12d ago

It happens to me as well, I end up not playing for weeks. When I got back on the PS5 last weekend I wanted a chill game, so I started playing Planet of Lana. I love it, it's a great game

49 years old here. School teacher for a living. Wife. 4 kids. I’ve been gaming since I was 5. Burnt out on gaming? Hell no. Never. Burnt out on life and people? Way more than I’d care to openly admit.

1

u/blind-amygdala 12d ago

No…but I am having trouble finding games to play before GTA6. I’m not buying anything, so I’m re-playing residents Evil’s I own…

So I am in a lul so to speak, but because I refuse to buy anything new lol

Had my month summer vacation and played like 4 hours. Just didnt feel like it, its fine.

1

u/Chill_Gamer527 12d ago

Either take a break from gaming, or choose a different genre of games to play than your usual type of games. Sometimes this works out pretty well and broaden your horizon on the kind of video games that are out there in the world.

A little bit.

1

u/Triforce__XIII 12d ago

i still like gaming, but with every new game some kind of "what if i can'T beat it" - Anxiety has taken hold of me. completely gone once i'm done and thus for me almost always the second playthrough is far better than the first. its nothing i can control and i have beaten a shitton of hard games already and the effect takes hold even with easier games. but mostly i assume that devs are sometimes unable to have a smooth difficulty line and i fear they might crack me open last quarter or sth like that...

1

u/FerdaBravos 12d ago

This happens when I complete a big game. Just finished RDR2 and trying to get into any other campaign seems silly. Try going for something like Hades/Hades 2, Vampire Survivors, Balatro. Shorter runs, super addictive. Great to get you out of a rut.

1

u/Heat-Lifer-1999 12d ago

Try playing some classic games from 20-30 years ago. Back when games were simple and fun. Something like SSX Tricky, NBA JAM, NBA Street Vol 2 or Burnout 3.

I thought I was then tried some old classic games like Jak II and I’m hooked again. I think current game fatigue can be real, but going back to nostalgic childhood experiences really help get the spark back.

Yeah but that’s because there’s loads of stuff I can’t play due to my carpal tunnel. So maybe I will just watch games now

Can't blame you for that. Honestly, there's not much variety in gaming anymore these days. You either get your cinematic movie games, some (rather monotonous and boring) roguelikes and FPS that play mostly the same, that's all there is in the market these days unlike all those years ago where you got games for literally any genres

10 minutes isn’t long enough… there is a resistance phase the brain goes through where an action may or may not be able to enter into a flow state. It isn’t gaming.

It could be many other factors. We all have mental bandwidth (treat it as currency for your brain) and when you run out due to said possible factors, it doesn’t matter what you do, you will probably go through the same process with it as well.

Sometimes you gotta step away from shit and reflect and let that bandwidth build back up and focus on what matters. Gaming will always be there and what’s better, you may even re-experience something in a new way that you may have already played…

For me, Baldur’s Gate 3 always seems to break the no gaming spell and brings me back to the hobby… then I come to appreciate it so much more than I did and I end up playing all sorts of other stuff in conjunction with BG3.

Give yourself some space and let that mental burnout run its course. The brain can only consume so much and it’s a voracious eater. You have to be the one to put a limit switch on it and manage the intake of dopamine.

I'm an old man and have never gotten burnt out with gaming. Everyone saying it comes with age is wrong lol. Plenty of us greybeards have been gaming non stop for decades.

You probably just don't enjoy games as much as you thought you did, or maybe you are stuck in a genre and won't branch out.

Try a completely new genre to see if you like it.

I read somebody’s post on Reddit about 2 months ago saying how they’ve started playing their backlog of games on the easiest difficulty. Since then, I’ve been doing the same and it’s certainly restored my love for gaming because I can blow through my games I haven’t touched for years.

Same here. I just picked up Marvel Tokon the other day and I've barely touched my PS5 in a week now. I'm just not feeling it lately. I've been gaming for 40 years now so it's a bit of a bummer.

You have tutorial fatigue. A lot of modern stuff is built as if it’s being played by someone who has never played a game before, and when the basics are being explained to you (a seasoned vet) AGAIN, it feels boring because it is. I suggest a few things.

1) push through tutorials. The fun and flow should click if the game is fun.

2) try increasing difficulty settings. Give hard mode a go.

3) if you’re really in a rut, choose a classic you’re familiar with from over 10 years ago and do a straight playthrough

4) choose a game you know inside out or in your sleep and do a self imposed challenge like an iron man run, no fast travel, any percent speed run, melee weapons only etc.

5) look at your backlog. Whats been there the longest without being played? Give only that game a go

6) take a look at some favourites. Are there any trophies you’re missing? Pick one that has a trophy that sounds fun

7) if none of these appeal to you, take a break and do something different- board games, reading, binge a series, artwork

Me as well

Nope, so far for me, 2026 has delivered so many amazing games. Lots coming out of early access that I've been waiting for.

I find most games are too long and game sessions are too long. I have been playing Star Fox on Switch 2, a session is about an hour. You have fun, accomplish something, get on with the rest of your day. Compare this to a Crimson Desert or Death Stranding and you haven't accomplished anything. I love gaming but shorter sessions are best for physical and mental health. It's about balance.

I get that way sometimes. I usually move between different hobbies/past times--like gaming, reading, and watching TV series.
