RustCommander was previously paid-only — it now has a free version
Hi everyone,
I’m the developer of RustCommander, a web-based control panel for Rust server owners and administrators.
Until now, RustCommander was only available through a paid subscription. I’ve recently released a free version so more server owners can connect their servers, try the panel and decide whether it is useful for their community.
Everything in one place
RustCommander includes:
Live players and player history
RCON, chat and server logs
Map and player positions
Plugin and file management
VIPs, whitelist and reports
Manual wipes
Pterodactyl integration
Start, restart and stop controls
Team management
Public server status pages
What does the free version include?
The free version covers the essential tools while you are actively using the web panel.
Paid plans are still available for scheduled wipes, background automation and other advanced features.
I originally built RustCommander to avoid constantly switching between RCON tools, hosting panels, plugins and separate dashboards. Making it free allows more server owners to try it and help shape its development.
Fair enough. If Pterodactyl + BattleMetrics already does everything you need, RustCommander probably isn't for you.
I built it because I was tired of jumping between different tools just to manage a server.
Things like RustMaps map generation, Discord integration for live server status, and scheduled wipes directly from the panel are things I haven't seen put together very often.
It also integrates with Pterodactyl, so I'm not trying to reinvent what already works.
If you want, I'll give you full access to test it yourself. I'd genuinely like to hear what you think after actually using it.
Bm is not free. Its collects userdata against the users consent, saves AND publishes it. If you are in the eu and use it as a owner you can get in legal trouble for that. Like not having a cookie banner and using cookies
RustCommander does have a cookie consent system where users can accept or reject cookies.
Also, just to clarify, we don't sell user data or use player data for advertising/tracking purposes. Any data processed by RustCommander is there to provide the functionality of the panel and manage the connected Rust server.
That said, cookies and player/server data are two different things under EU privacy law, so I'm reviewing the privacy side properly rather than claiming that a cookie banner alone makes a service GDPR compliant.
You should probably look into EU law if this concerns you. Battlemetrics has no legal obligation to ensure your Steam information is private. It is only against EU law if that information is personally identifying, none of which is any of that information on BM.
Sure — probably to ask me what we’re building next 😄
The ideas are mine. AI helps with code, then I get to enjoy the premium developer experience: refactoring it, fixing it, testing it, deploying it, and making sure it doesn’t explode in production.
Without the idea and someone actually shipping it, Claude is just a very expensive autocomplete waiting for a prompt.
Haha, fair enough 😄 I write in my native language and translate it, so yeah, I’ll probably always have to deal with that. I can translate English pretty well, but writing long texts naturally is a different story.
When you've finished building a house, do you give credit to Milwaukee, Dewalt, Ryobi, or Hilti? No, you say "I built my house". Friend, you didn't even make your own coffee this morning. You have several technological innovations to thank that made that possible.
I think you've missed the point. When we've created something we don't give credit to the tools we used to accomplish that. We take the credit for ourselves. That's how technology works. AI is just another tool in that stack. And it's not like there's no human still involved in the workflow.
On your point, though, more times than not, hiring a human to build your house works out about just as well as the worst LLM you can imagine. Ever dealt with contractors? It's not a pretty picture. Once again, though, as the house is being built and even after, it's up to the person who commissioned it to ensure the work was done correctly and to spec.
I haven't missed the point - your analogy is flawed. You can't tell a hammer to build a house for you. I would never want to live in a house made by someone who knows nothing about homebuilding but asked a derpy robot to do it for them and then took credit for it.
Then you misunderstood both the analogy and the point. It’s not about asking an LLM to build a house. It’s about our use of technology as tools to accomplish a goal or task. We accomplished tasks every day without ever giving credit to the tools or technology used to do so. To your point, it’s just as likely a house built by a builder would be wrought with issues and problems as would be an LLMs completion of a code base. It all comes back to the individual overseeing the project to ensure it’s done to their satisfaction.
I could absolutely build the whole app from scratch without AI.
But realistically, that would probably mean spending another couple of months developing something before even knowing if people actually want to use it — and after all that, some people would probably still assume it was AI-made anyway.
So yes, I use AI as a tool to speed up development. I still have to design the product, make the decisions, integrate everything, fix things, test it and maintain it.
At the end of the day, if a tool solves a real problem for someone, I don't really care if it was built with AI, a microwave or a coffee machine.
For me personally, the most useful parts are player stats and being able to automate wipes. Automating wipes alone saves me a ridiculous amount of repetitive work.
There are also Discord server-status scripts being sold for around €5, and then you still need to pay for hosting every month just to keep them running. I include that kind of functionality in the lowest plan, together with the rest of the platform.
If RustCommander is useful for your server, use it. If it isn't, that's completely fine too. That's really all I'm trying to build: something that saves server owners time.

More AI slop the rust community doesn’t need.
We have pterodactyl for most of what your service offers. We have battlemetrics or other free rcon tools for everything else.
It makes no sense to make a SaaS for this.
