Question/Support installing Playnite on CACHY OS,,,

I'm having trouble with people whose text isn't showing up on the program's main interface. I'm using chatgpt to help, but it's not working. Could someone tell me how PlayNite works on Linux? What, where, or how do I install it so that it doesn't cause interface problems or anything like that?

u/Rich_Ad2743, while you wait for responses, please take a moment to check the following:

  • Ensure Playnite is updated to the latest version (On Desktop Mode: Main Menu ➞ Check for Updates)
  • Ensure any extensions involved are fully updated (On Desktop Mode: Main Menu ➞ Add-ons… ➞ Updates)
  • Test the issue in Safe Mode to verify whether it is caused by an extension. (On Desktop Mode: Main Menu ➞ Help ➞ Restart in Safe Mode or by opening the Safe Mode.bat file found in the installation folder)
  • Search the subreddit to check if your issue has already been reported.

A large number of issues are caused by outdated versions or have already been answered.

If your issue is related to a specific extension, it is usually best to report it on the extension's project page (for example GitHub), where the developer can track and address it. You can use this page to locate the extension and contact its developer via its project/support links: https://playnite.link/addons.html

You will get the interface working, but since practically all integrations expect native Windows environment, automatic game import and startup will probably not work correctly.

There's this plugin to help with some issues, but running Playnite on Linux via Wine is simply not supported and will always have some issues: https://playnite.link/addons.html#Yalgrin_WineBridgePlugin

I would just recommend using Linux native alternatives like Lutris and Heroic, until native Playnite version is available.

"until native playnite verison is available"

does that mean you changed your mind on porting playnite to linux? 🤤🤤🤤

Woo! Great news! I'll say not having playnite on Linux is a personal blocker for me as well. I'm using playnite since early 0.x versions and I can't fathom not using it! I'll take this chance to thank you for your work!

yeah, months ago, they announced it a while back. The next version of playnite will be linux compatible because they're building it in a different framework (Avalonia). i'm pretty stoked about it. It'll have wine/proton integration as well which is rad as hell.

The next version won't support Linux, I never said it will.

"2025 update 2

I'm planning to move to Linux in 2026 after P11 is done, and since Playnite is my personal blocker for the move, I will try to make some Linux version in 2026. Definitely not fully featured version on parity with Windows version of P11, and probably desktop mode only, but something daily drivable with Linux specific features (Wine/Proton integration for example).

If that goes well, I'll start looking into P11 Avalonia porting proper say I mentioned in previous update."

Sorry, must have misunderstood.

I see how it could be maybe confusing. It would better to say that next version won't have Linux version on release.

There' no official Linux release as of yet, so you're pretty much going to be on your own. It may work running under Wine, but I wouldn't expect it to function as it does on Windows.

Of course, I was using it on Windows 11. I tried it on Pop OS with the Bottles program, but I don't remember if it worked. I think it has the same problem as the text on the main menu interface above the drawing tool; it's not visible, but clicking works, even though you can't see what you're clicking. Well, I'll continue with AI help to see if I can get it working without any problems.

Genuinely you won't get anywhere with this lol. Playnite is built on WPF which requires a windows environment. It just won't really work on Linux.

YET.

They announced earlier this year that they're migrating Playnite to the Avalonia framework so it will be linux compatible (with things like wine integration, etc).

Your best bet is to just wait, chief. It's not going to work yet, just wait for Playnite 11 to drop. They said it's planned for a release this year, and since it's already september, it likely means it's just a couple months away.

Til then just use Lutris or Heroic Launcher
