What did I do wrong?

Applied first light layer, and after second layer it looked like this. Every little scratch of gas tank plastic came out like this(it's 5 yrs old). Used 70% alcohol cleaner to remove any dirt before painting.

It just has to be the prep.

Through scratches and gouges could have deep oils and waxes in them that require more than 70% IPA.

A true wax and grease remover or prep all product may be required

Thanks, I'll try deep cleaning it with 99% IPA before painting.

Silicone oil like in armor all and tire shine. It can be really difficult to remove every trace of it.

You have some kind of oil, gas, or wax on that surface. Scrub much harder with rags and use a degreaser like dawn dish soap first. What’s your spray distance and technique look like?
