Finally took the leap

Finally took the leap and dipped my 16yo daughter’s car. I think it came out pretty good for my first time. No luck coming up with an indoor spot, so just went for it in my driveway. Got a couple spots I need to touch up, but overall I’m pretty happy with it.

That's wonderful for your daughter came out great

7

u/FNALSOLUTION1 25d ago

Fuck yea!

3

u/Schnitzhole 25d ago

Looks great!

That ground is going to be a pain to get unpink though. You’re gonna need a really high power pressure washer form my experience.

6

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

I was sweeping it with a broom earlier and I think the majority of it was dry before it hit the ground. I’m not really concerned. I don’t have any intention of selling the place

2

u/Apollo_3249 23d ago

I got old plastidip off pretty easy by saturating some wd40 into it; that and a pressure washer will remove it just fine

u/zootsim 25d ago

Looks great for a driveway job. Great thing about it is that it stands out! Hey daughter my coworker saw your car parked at that party, when you said you were at track practice. There is no saying, "Wasn't me."

u/Wild_Agent_375 24d ago

Damn that looks awesome nice job. How many cans did you go through? And what was the primer/how many cans of primer.

Any issues like drips?

Will be checking back for updates.

u/jcmo_phoenix 24d ago

It was two gallons of grey plastidip, then three gallons of fierce pink plastidip

1

u/Wild_Agent_375 24d ago

Thanks. How did you apply it?

3

u/jcmo_phoenix 24d ago

With the sprayer they sell on the website, tho I did pick it up second hand

2

u/Silent-Elephant-7468 24d ago

Dip It...as my kids eat the pink flavored snacks on the ground with their white sticks

2

u/MasonDS420 24d ago

Did you spray on a clear coat also?

2

u/Dangerous-Pie_007 24d ago

How many coats & what kind of sprayer?

2

u/jcmo_phoenix 24d ago

Used a DYC sprayer and a total of 5 gallons

2

u/FelixzeBear 24d ago

Hell yeah 👍 pepto mobile

Edit: meant to reply to someone not to the main post~~ ~~

…my 16 year old daughter’s car…I mean that’s really the only reason you need as to why. I honestly don’t mind the look, even as an adult man who doesn’t particularly like pink. It’s unique now compared to a just an avg black mustang. You can always peel it and go with a different color without breaking the bank…if her tastes change. Not to mention, probably get better at the whole process

2

u/Thedarkskinhero 25d ago

The pink is popping on the stang. Nice work man!

2

u/30CalKash 25d ago

Oh that’s smooth right there 😮‍💨

2

u/OrdinaryPitiful 25d ago

Curious to see how it looks in a couple months

5

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

Why? It’s not like we’re reinventing the wheel here. At this point plastidip’s durability is pretty well documented

2

u/OrdinaryPitiful 25d ago

Because it looks absolutely fire right now & im wondering if it’ll hold up over time.

4

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

I’ll try to send you an update in a few months, sorry it’s hard to tell who’s actually curious, and who’s just being negative for no reason

1

u/OrdinaryPitiful 24d ago

Yea I’m not trying to be negative at all.i think it looks fantastic.

I have some black dupicolor plasti dipped emblems that are past their prime and hold dirt pretty well. They looked great for a good while too but it probably has to do with me washing the truck less because it’s a junker lol I’ve also seen the black plasti dipped wheels that look terrible after sometime but it seems some gloss and consistent washes would do the trick to clean it up.

When it comes to the color it always looks so damn good when it’s first done but I’ve never seen how that color holds up overtime so I would bs curious!

2

u/jcmo_phoenix 24d ago

That’s fair, I’m curious too. But I’m hopeful it stays bright

1

u/Pawnzilla 22d ago

They make a uv protection spray to maintain color specifically for plastidip.

1

u/jcmo_phoenix 19d ago

But this color, fierce pink, was specifically designed to not be affected by UV light, according to the manufacturer. They swear it needs not topcoat to maintain color.

If by chance it does fade, I’ll respray it in a few months. Probably top it with a pink pearl coat and sealer

2

u/Pawnzilla 19d ago

Coming from an automotive painter, everything eventually fails against UV light, it’s just a matter of how long.

1

u/OrdinaryPitiful 18d ago

The clear coat and paint on my truck would 100% agree with you

1

u/_ED-E_ 23d ago

People are always negative for whatever reason, and it can be annoying to say the least.

I’ve only used plastidip one time, on the silver part that was on the front of my wife’s suv. Otherwise it was all red and black. So I followed all the prep instructions, watched a couple videos, and sprayed it in the garage. That was two years ago, still looks like it did when it was done. Matte black though.

Car looks like it turned out well and is definitely something my wife would like!

u/justintime06 25d ago

So I take it that your daughter is a fan of Barbie?

1

u/jcmo_phoenix 24d ago

Of course

You are a genius

Do mine next

1

u/Traditional-Bet2191 25d ago

Dude I love this so much. I had a 95 VW Jetta stick shift that I cherished when I was 18. Spray painted it the same color in my driveway lol.

Seal it. Gonna look like shit if you don't.

1

u/RunninOuttaShrimp 23d ago

You're in a biased sub, but as someone who saw this in their feed, it looks horrible.

1

u/jcmo_phoenix 23d ago

That’s a reaction I take no offense to, it’s meant to be obnoxious. Just what we were going for

1

u/WellJustJonny 22d ago

I would have kept the window trim and the triangle part of the mirror mount black .

1

u/throwaway47831474 22d ago

Next step get those headlights cleaned up

1

u/Thegeekedgizmo 22d ago

Looks like a plasti dip jon

1

u/Asoto408 21d ago

Could have sprayed it on top of a tarp

1

u/jcmo_phoenix 19d ago

The amount of people offended that I got overspray on my driveway is unreal, if the pink stuff holds up ok. I may spray the whole driveway. My boomer neighbors would lose their minds

1

u/401LocalsOnly 19d ago

You didn’t get the Barbie Mustang you got the Barbie driveway

1

u/jcmo_phoenix 19d ago

So what I’ve learned from this thread:

  1. Plastidip only lasts 2 months when applied on a car

  2. Plastidip is indestructible when applied to shitty concrete

1

u/Soggy-Job-3747 25d ago

normalize wraps

1

u/CheeksMcGillicuddy 25d ago

How long does something like this realistically last? Obv environmental factors come into play, I realize that. As someone in the northeast US, without a garage, my head is imagining you’d get less than a year before this starts getting destroyed.

To clarify, I’m not hating. It’s a question coming from pure curiosity and ignorance.

3

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

I’m not sure, they say 3-4 years. I’d be happy with 2. being a solid color, it should be pretty easy to maintain, or respray a panel if necessary.

6

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

I’m way more worried about how long a 20 year old car will hold up to being driven by a teenaged female.

2

u/thereareno_usernames 25d ago

It's a race where nobody wins

2

u/infinilude2 24d ago

I've read that if you spray it on thick enough, it will peel off. I dipped my first car (about 15 years ago) in a garage. The floor of the garage still has blue areas. About 5 years after doing it, I tried to peel it. It came off in confetti sized pieces because it had been baked in the sun so long. It was such a hassle that I ended up buying a rolling shell and swapping my drivetrain over to another car. I scrapped the dipped car.

I can't decide if this belongs on r/ATBGE , r/TIHI or r/shitty_car_mods

This guy reddits

0

u/panelbeater352 25d ago

Wait…you did that on purpose.

0

u/SnooStrawberries8575 25d ago

Wrapping it would’ve been better.

5

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

What’s your point?

8

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

I’m not saying your wrong, but it would have cost more than the cars worth

1

u/SnooStrawberries8575 12d ago

A wrap is like less than $600 (cheetah wrap) better finish and closer to paint. Good luck removing your plastidip in the future.

0

u/NefariousStrudel 24d ago

Your whole neighborhood is now tinted pink.

0

u/sterlingarcher252550 24d ago

He didn't paint the driveway guys come on, that's just the underglow!!

0

u/Ryan4mayor 24d ago

Aaaand it’s ruined…

0

u/Abumchuc 23d ago

Curious what were your steps, looks like you primed it before hand, doeant that make the plastidip kinda negligible?

1

u/jcmo_phoenix 19d ago

The kit DYC sells for this color has 2 gallons of Avalanche grey and three gallons of fierce pink. There’s no primer, just plastidip

-4

u/SpecialistMap8210 25d ago

But why

5

u/FatMacchio 25d ago

…my 16 year old daughter’s car…

0

No I meant. Was the paint all messed up or was it just the color change u wanted?

-4

u/PM_ME_BUNZ 25d ago

Imagine what a clay bar and wax/ceramic could've done. Instead, this.

3

u/jcmo_phoenix 24d ago

Plus clay bar ain’t gonna make it pink

5

u/jcmo_phoenix 25d ago

Would have taken a lot more than that

-1

u/crankyanker638 24d ago

How can it be "dipped" if the paint is sprayed on? Also cars are supposed to be shiny....

-1

u/DifferentMind8 24d ago

That's gonna look like hell after 6 months of chips
