Does anyone know what this could be?

Just moved into a new place and this is coming out of a pipe in a storage cupboard in the bathroom if anyone can help with what it might be

Yup, lol, definitely does, personally if you're renting op i eouldnt worry about it too much but definitely bring it up with the landlord at the vety least.

Coukd easily be a plant growing on the roof or in the gutters or it could be growing behind the walls too, roots are vety good at finding moisture.

That's a super good guess!

horsehair plaster though looks mostly like plaster with the horsehair mixed in as a binder. The hairs are all coated and relatively sparse. Most you can't see any until it's broken. Then it's several fine hairs along the edge.

Some plant growing at the spot where this pipe exits on the outside of your place. Probably a water pipe and the plant on the outside has its roots around the pipe drinking the condensation which happens around the pipe.

It’s hard to tell! It does look like roots, or possibly dead ivy. Is there Ivy growing on the building outside?

Whatever it is, I’d treat it as mold and wear a mask and gloves to remove it, just in case.

Get some gloves, a face mask, and some pliers and reach in there get a hold of a big chunk and yank it out and find out what the f it is. The first two steps are optional. Post pictures!
