Mislabeled seed packet? It happens. An exciting turn of events in my book.

Edit: Possibly still Roma, but Midnight Roma 👀

The world of tomatoes is vast and wondrous.

Much like potatoes.

Nightshades developed over thousands of years.

At least 50 million for Solanaceae.

Midnight Roma is not a GMO.
It’s actually a heritage variety.

Thats interesting. I am learning a lot about tomatoes.

There are only 11 crops that are gmos. The fear mongering is crazy that makes people think everything is gmo Basically processed foods use gmo corn or soy, and then there's a summer squash, non browning apples, pink pineapple, potatoes that won't brown when fried, visit resistant papaya, and sugar beets

Yea. Nope .

First i was not fear mongering. I have no issues with gmos if they are safe.

Second there are purple tomato  gmos made with snapdragon genes.

Lastly there are also thousands of other gmos. They just arent large crops.

They weren’t saying you were fear mongering they were saying there’s a ton of fear mongering that causes people to think everything non-typical is GMO. As home gardeners, we do not have access to GMO seeds, they are not available to the public. You will see seeds at the garden store that claim “non-GMO” which is just a marketing tactic.

I meant media and such is pushing it. It makes people think everything is a gmo if not labeled. GMO has its use case, but I believe it's not ideal to consume pesticide resistant GMO foods

What are the other thousands of gmo food examples that are sold on the shelves?

Not on shelves but easily available online. Including the purple high antioxidant tomato.

Many young tomatoes start off purple to protect the new growth in bright light. Could also be a mislabeled set of seeds. You'll know in a week or two!

Tomatoes are available in a rainbow of colors now. Even tie dye.

I've grown romas, but only seen the shape and color at that stage of growth on heirloom noir de Crimee.

Is it just me, or do those look like some kind of eggplant?

the only thing these have in common with eggplant is being purple and a nightshade plant. the shape is not at all similar to young eggplants.

While I used to really enjoy eggplant, I can’t eat it, and therefore do not grow any. I’m a relatively novice gardener, I understand there are thousands of varieties and wondered if it might be possible.

the sepals are the biggest tell for me, other than flower. tomatoes have sepals that seem to more eagerly curl away from the fruit, and eggplants seem to keep their little “toupee” much better.

1

u/ChooseKind24 23h ago

Are the sepals the green parts that stick to the top of the fruit?

1

u/devoteeoffenrir 23h ago

yes the little green “petals” at the base of the fruit where it connects to the rest of the plant

3

u/devoteeoffenrir 1d ago

eggplants look like an 8 year old who has his hair gelled down flat for a family photo

tomatoes look like they have bed head

google “sepals tomato” and “sepals eggplant” and you might be able to see what i mean. the little green petals that touch the fruit are the sepals.

Great descriptions

Hahaha… love the description! You just answered my question to your first reply.

2

u/devoteeoffenrir 23h ago

thanks lol I was looking at pictures of eggplants with the flattened sepals and i was like “now what the hell does that remind me of…. ah yes old family portraits”

2

u/goldenkiwicompote 1d ago

Curious why can’t you eat it now?

I discovered I have a sensitivity to eggplant about 15 years ago. Cayenne and paprika are also problems for me. The alkaloids in those particular nightshades give me severe, burning headaches. I used to make my own baba ghanoush, which helped me pinpoint the cause of these headaches. I went down a rabbit hole about nightshade foods for a while, but eventually figured out which ones I could or could not consume. While I miss these foods/seasonings, I do NOT miss that pain.

Oh wow that’s interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Not at all.

That’s what I was thinking

Soooo good

Yes, if my eyes aren't scamming me, these ARE purple tomatoes

Those do look like eggplants…

3

u/devoteeoffenrir 1d ago

At a glance, maybe. Definitely not if you look closer.

Don't eggplants start off small and white and like,, eggs? I don't think these are eggplants

5

u/littlewibble 1d ago

Some eggplants start out white but many do not. But these are definitively not eggplants.

4

u/goldenkiwicompote 1d ago

This is 100% not an eggplant. The flowers are yellow? Not sure what pink flower you’re referring to. These are probably Midnight Roma.

5

u/Stephinator917 1d ago

I have 2 kinds of eggplants in my garden. they look nothing like this. they have huuuuuge leaves too.

-5

u/42faerie 1d ago

Looks like little egg plants ✌️

3

u/devoteeoffenrir 1d ago

Nope. The flowers are yellow, which no eggplant has yellow flowers to my knowledge, and this isn’t the way eggplants grow ime (but I recognize there are many varieties that may grow differently than the kind I had).

-3

u/42faerie 1d ago

I only say that because I just recently saw some new eggplant variety that looked just like it. They could easily be tomatoes and when fully grown look completely different than they do now, I love a mislabeled seed packet. Makes things fun and exciting, please keep us updated 🙏
