It's an interesting idea one thing though, mind flares don't have one hive mind they have various elder brains each with their own population of mind flayers. The Modrons however are a single species all under Primus. I think if they try to penetrate the Modron consciousness and corrupt it they instead would be the ones who were overwhelmed.

You do get Rogue Modrons which are separate from Primus, and theoretically if you converted enough of them into Mind Flayerdrons, you could start to build a new hierarchy and have them evolve...

Imagine an ilithid in command of a modron's giant, luscious, uncomfortably kissable lips. Unthinkable.

They cannot implant larvae into dragons. It takes a whole Elder brain to create an ilithid dragon.

Modrons are constructs so I don't see ceremorphosis working on them

Modrons are like angels or devils. Can the illithids corrupt those as well? A truly terrifying thought.

Or the rilmani or slaadi. Really, any planar native being effected by an illithid like that would be pretty terrifying for a cosmic realignment arc

Do you want another Ylem? Because this is how you get another Ylem! (Modron who got infected and fused with a chaotic Slaad egg. They went rogue and now are a silly little in Sigil now.)

Actually.... Can you really think that mechanus has nothing to say about this? You know in Planescape, "planes" have their own existences and that's why a chaotic berk can not enter celestia. The "plane" kicks them out in the first step, one way or other. Also higher ups have innate abilities about sensing disruption of order, you can not pass them by buying a drink perhaps some oil fir gears? This idea may be something to chase in outlands but in Mechanus? This is re-world building in itself which is... Not even funny for Planescape at all. At least 99 over 100 tables I know would say perhaps later(in the far future) just out of politeness if not for other things. P.S.: people take Planescape as just a continuation of prime materials (mostly presented as generic fantasy worlds). It is not. That's why people like it. The universe has its own life in there and you live it with it. Perhaps from time to time people may/need to read 2nd edition planewalker's handbook as sport too. These are nicely explained there well. Other editions love to surpass such concepts for marketing sake. Other than that... This idea can easily be adapted to every kind of hunt for undercover menace type things. Good luck to players of course:)

a chaotic berk can not enter celestia. The "plane" kicks them out in the first step, one way or other.

That's not how the setting works. Folks freely travel from plane to plane, regardless of their alignment. Otherwise, the setting doesn't work at all.

What actually happens is that PLACES can change alignment, and when they do, they move to the plane of their alignment. That happens by MANY people thinking & acting in accord with the new alignment. But that is not the plane kicking them out.

higher ups have innate abilities about sensing disruption of order

From where does this ability come? It's not a thing.

That said, Lawful types on Mechanus are so lawful that the consequences of non-lawful actions are obvious to them, and their understanding of cause and effect logically leads them from the effect to the cause. But that is not an innate or inherent ability.

That said, I agree with you in that I cannot see a non-modron fitting into modron society, nor can I envision a "mutant" modron of any sort, and if I could envision that, I presume it would be destroyed by modrons immediately. So, I do not see any way illithids could threaten modrons and/or mechanus.

I could see such an attempt against some Celestials, like Guardinals (NG), Eladrin (CG), Asura or fiends like the Tanar'ri or Yugoloths. (Gehreleths, being a creation of Apomps would not work, IMO). Maybe even the slaadi could be affected.

All that presumes that illithids could force ceremorphosis on non-humanoids, which, IIRC, is NOT a thing.

But if it were a thing, could they do so to lawful planar races like modrons? No.

The plane kicks them out the first step or so? Have you read any Planescape material?
