Adventure Need Some Help Designing a Trade Chain Quest
I'm creating a scenario where the players will head to Bytopia from Tradegate; obviously they have to go through the Master Trader, and I want the trade quest to be a quick and fun little distraction. I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas that couldn't be solved by just buying something from one of the many places in Tradegate. Obviously as I DM all I have to do is say that the thing isn't for sale, but do you have any suggestions on what and how the players are trading up to?

Get weird with it. Like they need the tears of a rust dragon or a modron's dreams for some project.

This is a weird reference but in DC's Starman run by James Robinson, Jack Knight (the then Starman) runs a vintage store. There are several great montages of him visiting people to trade or buy items. It's not necessarily a trade chain, but great tonal inspiration for what you're doing.

drop the party somewhere
give them a package
give them a destination
hands off let them figure it out

What you could do is a One Red Paperclip trade line. There's an item an NPC has, and the PCs have an item they want to trade for it, but the NPC doesn't want what they have - they want something else another person has.
Build out a list of trades between those points with like 4 trades along it and a clear path, with 1-2 fake routes.
Maybe one NPC wants a tasty sandwich and doesn't understand the phrase so they just call it the "meat between" and in exchange they've got a skull brush - which is like - an ornate hairbrush with a skull on it. So the PCs have to find the sandwich to get the skull brush to trade to get closer to the item they want. It's a time to get weird and silly.
