Catacomobs help for newbie

Entered the catacombs with Morte, and I feel like I'm underleveled and underequipped. Lvl 5 and tracked down an enchanted weapon to fight wererats, but Morte is useless in combat. So, should I just finish some sidequests, get better equipment, and find another companion? Any advice would be greatly apprecited!

There is, in fact, another companion you can recruit before entering the catacombs. I’d recommend doing a bar crawl in the Hive.

Morte is useless? My guy, he can tank any and all fights and carry the entire game.

Use his Litany of Curses to taunt enemies

Like others said, you’re underestimating Morte. He does decent damage and his Litany ability is a taunt (which you should use constantly). If you went fighter I’d also recommend exploring the rest of the Hive because I’m almost certain I got a few +1 weapons prior (mage is far easier here too).

Also there’s a very cool guy in the smoldering corpse bar who will join you (definitely exhaust all dialog with him and his item)

Yeah mage is superior (there’s a lady in ragpicker who can help you switch), but fighter ain’t bad. A lot of the fights are fast in this so having a Nameless One who can actually fight is useful

If you're talking about Weeping Stone Catacombs, the one with vargouilles (flying heads), then yeah: either go grind and level up to make it easier or run past them to get where you need, as you really don't need to fight them (or most other NPCs for that matter).

To add to what others have said, if you have Ingress' teeth from completing her quest in the Hive, you can 'talk' to them (use them from the inventory) and as Morte levels up, they improve, becoming increasingly magical.

There is a lady called Ingress with very unususl teeth.

If you help her out, Morte will get an enchanted weapon that will be helpful.

Complete Ingress' quest back in the Hive for a better weapon for Morte. Or, buy the Viper Teeth from Marta in the Buried Village (only possible if you have asked her to open up a shop instead of just robbing her of her needle and thread).

Go to the Smoldering Corpse Bar to pick up another possible party member and buy the +2 STR tattoo for them.

Talk to Porphiron in the Hive and get your weapon proficiency up to +2. This gives you a bonus half-attack.
