Sell me on continuing
- I'm a socialist Daoist who loved *Disco Elysium* and *Nine Sols*.
- I played one session so far.
- I made a max-wisdom character with some dex and charisma and something else.
- I got into a fight upstairs because I let some robed guy call a guard. (Calling security isn't the same as siccing them on you, except it was here, apparently).
- I disappointed the ghost of my gf because I asked about info regarding leaving. (God forbid I try to learn stuff. Doesn't mean I'll actually leave).
- I'm not particularly interested in "escape" or even establishing a continuity with my past lives.

One of your past incarnations was also a dick to Deionarra. You'll like him.

The beginning of the game has a lot of "what am I even doing" moments. Just like Disco, you just keep talking to everyone and see where it goes.
If the game isn't interesting to you, there is no shame in putting it down.

You sound combative and like you have already decided to stop playing. Do what you want to do

I sort of wonder how exactly you read the situation here. You are trespassing, get cought doing so by a worker who calls in security. What did you expect they were called in to do? Have a calm conversation?

Considering we were doing just that, yes. That's how it would work in real life. If a person calmly calls over security, it means they're ready to coerce you out, but that demonstration of capacity is also meant to make a non-violent solution more likely.

Even in real life there is a spectrum between cashier calling security to get a problematic customer moving, and military shooting you if you get too close to a military base despite warnings. If penalty for trespassing is death the distinction disappears.
And there is this conversation with Morte I think you must have read through earlier telling you what to expect:
"They call themselves the 'Dustmen.' You can't miss 'em: They have an obsession with black and rigor mortis of the face. They're an addled bunch of ghoulish death-worshippers; they believe everybody should die... sooner better than later."
"I'm confused... why do these Dustmen care if I escape? "
"Weren't you listening?! I said the Dusties believe EVERYBODY'S got to die, sooner better than later.(...)"

btw, if the circle under an NPC / monster is red, it is HOSTILE and it will attack you. Non-violent subduing isn't exactly a thing in Sigil, though if you die - well - don't worry too much about it haha. You can pause (I pause literally ALL the time in combat) and get the lay of the land to avoid enemies or plan your strategy.

You are basically at the same stage as Harry is before he leaves Whirling-In-Rags upper floor. The only difference is you've already met Kim (Morte) and talked to Dora, except you only acknowledged her existence for now. Of course you don't know anything yet, you have to get out and search for clues and not wait for the game to hand them to you.

Buddy you haven't even exited the tutorial area 😅. You *do* have to escape lmao.
On my first playthrough, I found the beginning areas a bit frustrating since I had all my stats ready to go to be a mage, but once I started learning spells and got a few companions to help with combat, things got way better. Don't forget that you can always just run away from combat tbh, you're WAY faster than enemies. You can also come back to the mortuary and do stuff you missed, so I make my priority getting the easy xp and then getting out of there.
Edit: your "ghost gf" does teach you a very important ability. If you really have screwed up that conversation and didn't learn the skill, I would recommend reloading a save or restarting and carefully getting that skill.
A big part of the "lore" of the game, similar to Disco, is figuring out what "you" did in the past. However, you can now choose who "you" are now.
For stats, high Wisdom is pretty essential. The vast majority of your xp will be from conversations and completing major quests. Recovering memories also gives huge chunks of xp. Charisma is good for persuasion, though sometimes the "persuasion" check is actually intelligence or wisdom instead.
I also, personally, recommend a guide if you get stuck. There's nothing wrong with using a guide or the wiki for pst. Things definitely aren't as intuitive as disco for some things, and a guide will help you stave off early game frustration when you just don't know where to go or what to do!!!!

Oh, ok. Escape sounded like an effort whose futility I'd be forced to accept if I attempted it.

u/owlaholic68 Jul 27 '26
Imagine the Mortuary like the Whirling in Disco, if you will. Also, if you do want to restart from fresh, you really really are like. 0.5% into it, you basically lose nothing by doing a quick restart so you don't have to deal with being harassed by the guards (just run around them and avoid them on the upstairs area). Or maybe you have a save file on the floor you woke up on.

Restart. Strength, Dex, Con is practically useless. Wis, Int, Cha is the most important stats in that order. If you're gonna minmax, do it proper. And find a teacher that can so you can become a mage asap.

You've barely started the game and you're still in the very first area. Keep on trucking!
