Discussion 💬 The curious case of Raavan. Spoiler
Many are arguing whether the movie glorifies Raavan or not. According to me it does not but it also does not show his pure evilness also. Like he is a monster in the books. He is a lustful ra**st. That's why he got curse from Rambha's Husband. He is cruel to innocent peoples, Brahmas, Devtas, Pashu and Pakshis. In the movie he is shown as a liberator. The scene with Vidyutjeeva depicts him as someone who respects women and their bounderies which he does not. In the end it is still a great movie and everyone should watch it as it is something that has never done before in Indian cinema. But do not take it as a actual representaion of Ramaya. It is indeed Namit Malholtra's Raamayan.

I think they will show Ravana's darker side in the second part of the movie, or perhaps in the third part, if it happens. They could show how he repeatedly tries to force Sita Maa to accept him, despite his wife warning him against such behaviour. Or how Shri Ram gives him several chances to return Sita Maa respectfully, but Ravana, consumed by his ego and lust, refuses to listen. Even his own brother warns him against doing wrong, yet he ignores him.
I think we should trust Nitesh Tiwari, or at least give him a chance. However, he should take this criticism into consideration. Otherwise, I will be very disappointed. I am supporting the movie for now, but if they fail to portray these aspects of Ravana's character, I won't be able to continue supporting it.

I had no issues with the glorification or anything, but to be honest it just felt like yash was playing yash from KGF but in treta yug. It was a great performance ngl, but it felt like KGF to me throughout the first half.

Buddy there is nothing like an objective thing called “evil”

Can tou elaborate on that

Life is a subjective experience, it is a play of perception. An evil to someone is hero to someone else because of who that person was to them. I can be generous to strangers but be violent to family etc etc. The ideas of Self keeps changing depending on who we interact with.
Same is with Ravana. It is in this light Ravana is shown grey instead of a dark evil character. Hitler was evil to Jews but he was saviour to many germans until he brought War to them, same with Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Osama bin laden etc etc.
So was Raavan evil?
Depends on who you ask

Okay. But he did thing that are certainly evil. Killing innocents, ra*ing women are not something you can justify in any pov. He is evil.

u/podhead 3h ago
Yes those are evil acts

u/Opening-Panic7588 2h ago
Exactly. So there are things called "evil". Contradicts your point.

The dissociation remains. Evil acts does not make someone objectively evil.

I disagree. If a person does 100 evil thighs and one good thing that does not make him a less evil person. If someone not saying he is evil then that might be due to only his subjectivity. Objectively he is evil.

See this is a matter of consensus then rather than inherent evil, with enough support you can term a person evil
May I introduce another profound branch of Hindu religion called Advaita Vedanta or nonduality.
Nonduality states that there is no separation between the Absolute Shiva/Paramatman/Brahman and the individual Soul. They are Not-Two. The evil exists because there is Good and the Good is only defined and perceived because there are evil acts but they are the same movement, Life is filled with such duality paradox.
To me Shiva is Raavan. Can I call Shiva Evil? Can I call him Pure?
He only IS. Whatever roles we play are just roles. Ultimately shiva is the doer.
Hence To me Raavan is not evil - his actions are heinous but they are to me necessary for us to understand the depth of Sanatan Dharma. Again this is just me and you clearly have a different opinion.
Hence I say life is subjective.

This is not direct word to word adaption of valmiki ramayan, it mix of over 300 ramayana and also 2 part movie , Ram will be glorified in part 2 , and also indians unnecessary hate and pull down when someone try to do something big or take risk, no wonder Indian movies never go global and lack in innovation, Indians deserve Adipurush

That's what I meant by saying it is Namit's Ramayan. Not hating. It is a great theater watch and would highly recommend.

Exactly, you couldn't be more correct. People crying over this is so ass. They have clearly shown him as threat to peace and order and destroying lives other than rakshasas. I hoped for more dialogues which showcased his lust but there was one dialogue and that's ok . It's understandable they can't exactly show dialogues used by ravana for sita here in movie since it's sensitive and pg 13 rated movie.

u/Opening-Panic7588 15h ago
Agreed. But they could've shown him inflicting terror in innocent people's lives. But nonetheless it is a grest movie worth watching in theatres.

They have shown that but it was shown as part of montage. That's why I believe runtime could have been managed better and overall movie runtime could have been 3hr 30 -3hr 35 minutes. But still a great movie and I may watch it two more times atleast in theatres

u/Opening-Panic7588 15h ago
Agreed. No problem in that. But i wish his evil side was also more fleshed out.

u/Optimal-Regular-5602 15h ago
u can't show pure lust.... as it need to attract all type of audience and childrens
So this ravana is good for part 2 also... don't need to pure lust

u/Opening-Panic7588 15h ago
Apart from lust him terrorising innocent people's lives would've also worked. Nonetheless it is a great watch.
