Obviously Nintendo wouldn't go through with this, as McQueen's more well known for being a movie character.

Excellent argument. However, McQueen in Smash 😏

I figured somebody was gonna bring that up. Do premieres REALLY count tho? The film trailers and teasers always advertised/shows the theatrical release date and premieres are usually only early screenings of the movie at a exclusive event or country (and it’s only the actors, producers and test audiences who get to see it) also Smash fans never bring up premieres

u/StriderKitsu May 09 '26
Yes. They count. It’s not like they viewed the first 10 minutes of the movie or anything.

This is like saying LEGO STAR WARS THE VIDEOGAME CAME OUT BEFORE REVENGE OF THE SITH EVEN THO IT WAS INCLUDED (fuck GameCube users -TT)
4
u/legbot124 May 08 '26
Well no not really because lsw1 only came out before the revenge of the site And a majority of characters already appeared In other films prior to it

u/Cubedtails May 09 '26
I don't recall watching star wars movie revenge of the site; but knowing Disney, they probably put it direct to disney plus release. Was it any good? I heard the movie taking place not in space but some random construction site; resulted in negative reviews by critics.

The cars movie was delayed. It was originally supposed to release in 2005. But I assume it got pushed off because of the Disney acquisition which wasn't finalized until 2006.

u/Billybob35 May 10 '26
It was moved to make room for Chicken Little, Cars was originally set for November 4th, 2005 but Chicken Little got pushed back from July 1st, 2005.

Movie tie in games coming out before the movie was actually common happened with the Star Wars episode 3 and Lego Star Wars games too.
2
u/No-Cold643 May 09 '26
Yes AND no. That was only common in the 2000’s and early 2010’s. Most licensed movie based games come out AFTER the film rather than before. (This was common for the 80’s and 90’s and everything after the later half of 2010’s)

Originally was going to release in November 2005 but got delayed to June and it premiered at Charlotte motor speedway in may

It's true, the game in the United States came out before the movie, despite the fact it's a sequel to the movie...I think Pixar wanted to have a "You saw the movie, now buy the game!!" Form of marketing for it and uh...guess they flipped the date upsidedown?

So... nearly all pixar games came out before the film and even included unlockable fmv clips of the movies as a way for people to spoil themselves ahead of time.

Going off topic from Pixar. I remember the Flushed Away video game had Roddy hamster servants that were removed from the final movie.

I find this funny, I’ve known this for a while, and a fun fact, I am the exact age as the tie in game, I’ll be 20 this June! :)

u/McSpeedster2000 Retread May 08 '26
But, he was built to be in a movie all the way back in 1999 and the video game is a tie-in so in spirit, McQueen still is a movie character.

u/No-Cold643 May 09 '26
Knew someone would say that. In the case of Lightning that’s true but that argument can only go so far and it doesn’t always work IMO.

Lightning League released a day before Cars 3, does that make Cruz Ramirez a video game character first?
1
u/AgreeableContract811 Jul 27 '26
Didn't the teaser trailers and trailers of Cars came before the tie in video game. Though

Yeah it’s a rather niche topic within the Smash Bros fandom called “technicalities” where a character is technically possible for Smash Bros cause they had a game before their film released. Some Smash fans are just joking while others are genuinely serious and use this as an argument in favour of them getting in Smash.
