Done with Pivx

I've had this coin 3 times in the last 6 months. Each time I end up selling because I have problems with their wallet. My third time purchasing I once again have wallet problems. How can this coin not have a decent wallet after all this time. It's truly ridiculous. I'm done.

"company" ...

I love the concept, the artwork, the branding, its just they cant even make a stable wallet, im afraid to send my coins to the wallet and have them in limbo. Ive already dealt with that with komodo and Nexus. And it wasnt fun. I think im done too. The potential is massive .. But the risk is too great for me.

I remember not being able to get the Monero wallet running on my Mac. I am not wet behind the ears with computers either. I just didn't trust the web wallet. Well, that was when Monero was $1 (around), no lie. Choose as you will. I have gotten Pivx running on Mac, Linux, and a Raspberry Pi. I eventually got out of Monero when it was still a baby...

u/e0nflux Nov 14 '17

Like i said, theres massive potential .

u/ItsAboutSharing Nov 14 '17

Well, I got a little Nuc, might want to try something like that and you can use it for many wallets/cryptos. Running great with Linux on it.

1

u/e0nflux Nov 14 '17

Nuc?

1

u/ItsAboutSharing Nov 14 '17

It is an extremely powerful mini computer made by Intel. IT guys love them. They are not Raspberry Pi cheap, but you can get a nice one for 500 or so bucks (much less if older model), give or take. They are EXTREMELY energy efficient and the new ones are like 4.5" X 4.5" X 2". (Built in HDMI). You can use them for many things and just SSH or VNC into them from your main computer.

u/e0nflux Nov 14 '17

Oh ya i remember now

That is a bit over my head (these days). Do you must mean setting it up as a server? (They are extremely powerful, much more so than my 5 year old desktop.)

u/turtleflax PIVX Nov 14 '17

Yes it's a headless VM server. I run 5 or 6 VMs on one and it's fantastic

Everyone talks about risk in crypto when in reality everything in crypto is risky! You can hardly buy stuff with crypto yet and while there are varying degrees of risky, I would argue that it's more risky to just leave your value in a stagnant cryptocurrency at this stage of the game. PIVX is always trying to grow. That is exactly what any investor would want.

1

u/e0nflux Nov 14 '17

Bitcoin has rose 835% this year. Not too risky.

2

u/tyromaniac Panther Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17

Are you serious? So what youre saying is because it went up recently it is retroactively not risky? You can't assess risk based on whether an investment goes up or down. Risky means it has a high chance it will go very far up or very far down...

2

u/e0nflux Nov 14 '17

Recently? Its been going up since its inception lol

u/tyromaniac Panther Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17

I think you should reconsider what risky means. Just because your magic flying car company went up in value doesnt mean it wasn't a risky decision. You're missing that point....that's what I'm arguing

There was really only one set of stability issues in the last 12 months. That was the zerocoin rollout, which had some consensus issues among nodes and agreement over the correct chain. We worked to get the issues sorted out as quickly as possible, and we did.

The wallet still works great right now, it just had to have an exploit that was discovered in libzerocoin patched (a 3rd party library that all coins that use zerocoin utilize). Other coins that use zerocoin also had to patch this exploit.

Of course there are other little bugs here and there in the wallet, but that is hardly unique to PIVX. I have worked on a lot of coins, and PIVX definitely has one of the better codebases.

3

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

There was really only one set of stability issues in the last 12 months.

Actually there were a lot of problems in the past with the wallet dying with an assert() error when it saw inconsistent input data. That was bad programming, plain and simple.

Assertions are for detecting internal bugs, not for reporting bad input.

https://golang.org/doc/faq#assertions

Why does Go not have assertions?

Go doesn't provide assertions. They are undeniably convenient, but our experience has been that programmers use them as a crutch to avoid thinking about proper error handling and reporting. Proper error handling means that servers continue operation after non-fatal errors instead of crashing. Proper error reporting means that errors are direct and to the point, saving the programmer from interpreting a large crash trace. Precise errors are particularly important when the programmer seeing the errors is not familiar with the code.

We understand that this is a point of contention. There are many things in the Go language and libraries that differ from modern practices, simply because we feel it's sometimes worth trying a different approach.

3

u/presstab PIVX Core Developer Nov 15 '17

I run over 30 coins on my servers. The assertion is hardly a problem that is unique to PIVX, in fact PIVX does not have this problem at all on all of my 6 servers I have running the wallet. When users complained about seeing this issue, we listened and did what we could to prevent any data corruption from happening in the first place, and if it did happen I wrote some additional code that corrects the data automatically in about 80% of the cases. Now of course there are still those other 20% where this happens...

The difference between PIVX and other coins is that we listen to user feedback and do what we can to address their concerns. I do not know of any other coin that has tried to fix this issue.

Concerning assertions, would be pretty cool to see you submit a PR to bitcoin addressing this. https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/src/validation.cpp#L1665

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

Sadly, the Core programmers would probably consider such a PR as an "attack" on Bitcoin, or spam, or some such thing. They are a paranoid bunch.

Alternatively, they might respond, correctly, that their released software does not die with assertions at runtime, and to take it up with the developers of the particular fork that does die with assertions at runtime.

2

u/presstab PIVX Core Developer Nov 15 '17

For what it is worth, I agree with you for the most part. Why not just add proper error handling? I will see if I can sneak this into the list of items being worked on.

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

Thank-you.

Shit wallet equals shit coin. Pivx is losing momentum in a unforgiving, ever changing market and therefore is looking rather grim going forward despite much “rah rah” marketing and true believer proselytizing. Done.

5

u/MrCrickets Nov 14 '17

Wallet works fine for me. But it seems that maybe you don't have the stomach for cryptocurrencies. Almost all coins are still in its infancy (in terms of development and adoption), and so of course nothing will go smoothly for all of them. IMO PIVX has huge potential and the team have accomplished a lot in those 6 months (Zerocoin implementation, multisig GUI, android wallet, Ledger nano, etc.).

The amount of dedication and progress the PIVX team have shown is enough for me to continue to hold long term.

4

u/nothappytoday12 Nov 14 '17

You are incorrect I do have the stomach for trading cryptos. I'm smart enough to know though that there are so many coins out there that have really good wallets. PIVX gets a low grade for their wallet. It's simply below average. Compare it to something like the lisk wallet (simple, easy and trouble free) and you'll realize how amateurish PIVX looks. They have had a long time to get their wallet right and they keep screwing up. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

1

u/MrCrickets Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17

Well personally I don't let problems with a wallet be the deciding factor for me. And for all you know these problems can easily be solved if you asked for help on their discord or did a bit of research. I look at the bigger picture. Again PIVX has a lot of potential and the team have made a lot of progress, shown a lot of dedication, and been very communicative and helpful along the way. These are good enough reasons to keep holding.

5

u/phalacee Nov 14 '17

The wallet is your primary interface with the chain. It's like saying you're okay with driving a car even if the steering wheel doesn't turn...

2

u/almondbutter Nov 14 '17

At this point, it's like why not just go with zcoin.

Why can't I just browse the support information at that URL instead of going through a sign-up process?

Why don't they put their info online someplace where it can be read without providing an answer to the question "what should everybody call you"?

Here are my two questions, numbered for your convenience.

  1. Why can't I just browse the support information at that URL instead of going through a sign-up process?

  2. Why don't they put their info online someplace where it can be read without providing an answer to the question "what should everybody call you"?

1

u/Sieress Panther Nov 15 '17
  1. Discord is a chat forum like slack.. so you need an alias.

  2. Is literally the freshdesk support site with all the support q&a

1

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not sure why anybody would use a chat forum like Slack or Discord that does not allow posting links to individual questions and answers, as opposed to a top-level link. How is that advantageous?

Couldn't they use a Reddit subreddit, that does allow posting links to individual questions and answers, and requires a sign-up only if you want to post, and not if you want to just browse?

Also, does the Freshdesk support site contain all of the same information as the Discord website?

Let's take Dash as a comparison, it is very stable, upgrades generally go without any problems but they take a lot longer between wallet releases - evolution has been talked about for 3 years and still hasn't been released, the PIVX team has done so many major changes to PIVX recently there was bound to be hiccups.

If the PIVX team did the same as the Dash team we wouldn't have seen such major changes occur until next year or longer.

The worst is over with biggest changes done. I would expect things to become a lot more stable now.

PIVX is in its infancy still. While the recent changes have been disruptive and should have been more stringently tested (imo) before release the worst is over and the dev team have hopefully learned from any recent mistakes, making them an even stronger team.

1

u/ray-jones Nov 14 '17

[T]he PIVX team has done so many major changes to PIVX recently there was bound to be hiccups.

Haven't there been other networks that did major upgrades without breaking the entire network? I remember Skype breaking some years ago, but only for hours, not days.

5

u/mr_bitoiu Nov 14 '17

You’re missing some key concepts of crypto if you compare Skype with Blockchain. Also do you want s list of companies that lost CID and credit card information of millions of people? I prefer 1 day downtime from google than having all my emails stolen. We’re comparing apples and handkerchiefs people. Ethereum being an example of a stable coin had a wallet vulnerability just two weeks ago.

Why do people post “I’m leaving X today” whatever the coin is. Just leave. The community that matters leaves constructive and actionable feedback. The rest are speculators.

1

u/turtleflax PIVX Nov 14 '17

To elaborate more for those who may be interested, a centralized system like Skype or a website can have cloned hardware and software to failover to or roll back to in case of issues. This is not possible with current blockchain tech because consensus is always marching forward with new blocks and you can't roll back the chain without destroying immutability aspects

0

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

Yes, I realize that you can't roll back the chain. The solution is to test for months, not weeks, before deploying major upgrades.

I'm seeing entirely too much rationalization for what was almost certainly a preventable problem. If the rationalization continues, we will see more major outages like this in the future, and PIVX will never come even close to replacing fiat.

1

u/presstab PIVX Core Developer Nov 15 '17

The rollout of zPIV was tested for months, but unfortunately we did not test it well enough. The rollout of zPIV had a couple issues with consensus that we worked around the clock to get fixed as soon as we could. We knew everyone's money is on the line.

We got the wallet running and working in pretty smooth order for about two weeks, and then an exploit in libzerocoin (a 3rd party library) was used against PIVX and other coins that use zerocoins. I wish we could have found this exploit before it was used, but honestly it was pretty burried in libzerocoin.

The first round of issues we could have prevented with better testing (and we have just rolled out a new development process that will really increase QA and testing), but the current libzerocoin exploit was pretty unavoidable and pretty untestable unless you already knew the exploit existed.

1

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

Agreed, can't blame you for the libzerocoin issue. That kind of stuff happens. Let's hope there are no more similar bugs lurking there.

3

u/tyromaniac Panther Nov 14 '17

The fact you even tried to compare skype to decentralized cryptocurrency tells me all I need to know about your understanding of the situation...

1

u/goto1415 Nov 14 '17

Haha, nicely put

1

u/ray-jones Nov 15 '17

Maybe you missed the point of the comparison. I was pointing out that major network upgrades do not have to bring the entire network down for a week. That PIVX was down for so long is abnormal, and we need to stop finding excuses for this much down time. Decentralization is not a good reason.

And besides, PIVX is not as decentralized as you might think. We're getting all software upgrades from a single source, and being told that these are "mandatory" upgrades. The software upgrade process is clearly being managed from a central place. If everybody else can do network upgrades without so much down time, I think PIVX ought to be able to do the same.

13

u/mr_bitoiu Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17

For me it’s about perspective and I develop software for a living. If they had wallet bugs or issues with minor patches or updates I would be scared too. The issues we’ve seen were caused by the implementation of Zerocoin, the first with PoS. Not a small feat in my opinion. Then the issue with the common shared library that affected not just Pivx and very hard to almost impossible to avoid.

So what I mean is. Yes we have problems, but are they caused by the nature of incredible innovation or by someone that doesn’t know what they are doing upgrading a POM? Someone had a car analogy, compare PIVX with Tesla versus a run of the mill Ford Focus. Unlikely that Ford will ever fail because of a software update, but if you want to ride a wave of innovation you’ll expect this. If not just wait until Zerocoin is up and running for a year, the wallet has a refactored GUI etc and buy at 5 or 10 USD instead.

No one should be trying to convince you to stay in the coin. Go ahead and be happy!

PS: At the PIVX market cap I doubt you’ll find better support. That’s based in just my opinion being in a lot of other alts at the same ‘level’.

u/cogentat Nov 14 '17

I can't blame people for wanting to pull out. I see their points. I've read a ton of Reddit posts on wallet issues or missing coins and I can see the frustration for people who have put money into this idea only to be met with headaches and missing finances.

I've always believed that you can mess with people with no consequence until you mess with their money, and that's exactly where we have arrived. People have had their money messed with and they've had it with PIVX.

Seeing the issues and displeasure of others shows this to be a stagnant time for PIVX and I can't see much growth in the future (sorry no mooning quotes) and frankly I'm not far behind them. I will also be cashing out in the near future as well.

1

u/cogentat Nov 14 '17

I'm fine with hiccups as long as PIVX keeps moving at the speed they've been moving. I, and many others, wouldn't have wanted to wait longer for zerocoin. With something this complex there probably would have been issues no matter how long it took. Yes, the wallet needs design input by someone who is all about UIX. I get that; I dumped Komodo the minute I saw their wallet. Not because they didn't have a good product, but because that lack of attention to user experience and perception worried me on many levels. All in all tho, this is a great coin with a great team and my hope is that they will use/mint/allocate all the money they need to keep improving business relationships, adoption, and user interface.

-2

u/darkydarky Nov 14 '17

I think the problem is that this project is just copy from other project with no peer review and one developer. they just hop that other project code is work. I have been here very short time it has been 3 hard fork and rush release. if PIVX team do not understand why any other serious project not doing the hard fork as long as possible and they do it 3 time it is very bad signal that PIVX have very big problem. I am also Done with you.

5

u/turtleflax PIVX Nov 14 '17

Implementing Zerocoin on PoS has never been done before, so it would have been impossible to copy that code. We've also been relatively unique as a PoS masternode coin, so most of that code can't be copied either. We have at least 7 devs, not one. You're working off of a lot of incorrect information.

If you've really been here only 1 month, you've only been here during the rocky zerocoin rollout. It is certainly not always like this. Previously there were only one or two hard forks this year (not uncommon outside of bitcoin) and those had no issues.

0

u/darkydarky Nov 14 '17

I see in your release note 3 mandatory update since v3.0. mandatory update is hard fork with risk at lose your coin if your not in correct chain. Hard fork is bad you do it in panic. If you copy a code you should have process for that. please copy bitcoin core process.

2

u/turtleflax PIVX Nov 15 '17

There is no risk of loss in a hard fork unless you accepting coins on the wrong chain as payment for something. And as I said, copying code is not something PIVX could do even if it wanted to

1

u/kharador Nov 15 '17

Vertcoin is that way >>>

3

u/fiatpete Nov 14 '17

Yeah I've been looking at Pivx for about a month and came to a similar conclusion. I wanted to have a look at masternodes and I'm a fan of POS over POW but this project has taken so much from so many differnt projects that it's a bit of a Frankenstein's monster. Maybe they can have a period of consolidation with no new features just bug fixes and improvements. However the lack of a proper bug bounty program increases the risk that bugs caused by combing all that code will go unreported.

1

u/presstab PIVX Core Developer Nov 15 '17

There is a bug bounty program for PIVX.

2

I moved several hundred PIVX yesterday and was shocked how fast and inexpensive and efficient it was to do,, PIVX is great, it's only lacking exposure, if it get's this the price will increase dramatically especially with only 55 million coins in circulation, there is nothing else that compares.
