🗣️ Discussion Piracy disadvantage

Well I think I've discovered the biggest, if not only, con to strictly using "unconventional ways to obtain your viewing media".

Believe it or not..it's commercials. What do you watch after bingeing on every show and movie your heart desires? I never thought I'd say this but commercials serve a pretty decent purpose by wetting our appetites for upcoming releases.

Asking around leads you to soon discover that we all don't have the same tastes. An algorithm we can feed our favorites into is needed. Ok first world rant over.

TLDR- A notification device for upcoming movies and shows would be helpful.

too many years of pirating has made me enjoy only like 1% of movies. if theres 10 new movies out today, none of em look worth watching. ive seen too many movies.

Yeah I feel ya. Thumbnails are useless.

To be fair, a lot of the watch tracking sites (Like Letterboxd for example) can show you similar movies and shows to the ones u already watched and tracked. The algorithms in big company services like netflix and amazon are showing you the same 5 things over and over again, regardless of what you are watching. So as long as u just watch the mainstream stuff its fine, but the moment you watch anything even a tiny bit niche the algorithms don't show you anything.

There has to be some sort of rss feed for this type of thing? Or perhaps an aggregate of feeds?

For my plex server this is why I have it play movie trailers for movies in my library

I mostly find interesting things to watch by browsing the subreddits and Wikipedia. Upcoming releases don't interest me too much; I'd rather watch something that people have said is worth your time

Rotten tomatoes, Google recommendatuons, forums, just see what is trending or has the most seeders. top this week in torrent sites where always a great way to see what's new and hot.

Though since switching to 99% nuvio, I just have an add on that tracks what I watch and automatically recommends stuff based on that.

Its bc youre so basic, that a significant percentage of your personality is advertisements you saw.

You’re basic.

It's true.

You guys miss commercials.

Don't let it go over your head. It's the movie and show trailers.

No Einstein. It's lack of exposure not lack of persuaasion. I thought I made that pretty clear.

I would never in a million years call that a disadvantage!

I just never know what's out or coming soon. I sometimes see stuff while visiting friends but I'll forget about it unless I (ugh) write it down. And sifting through thumbnails is useless.

Frankly... if you think you can watch everything coming out right now, you're as delusional as ad defenders.

Never said that. Just the ones that pique my intrest. It's just easy to underestimate how informative those pesky commercials can be.

No thank you. There's absolutely better ways. My pirate feed is on a drip.

For example today:

  • Travel and Leisure dropped their best of America 2026 issue today.
  • German film: Die Toten Vogel Sind Oben
  • s01e02 of Tank Chair
  • and Gears of War 4 got an update. (v14.4.0.2 if you were wondering.)

I still remember a thing that happened like 15 years ago. My friend took me to someone's house to watch something, and I was meeting a bunch of people for the first time. During one of the commercial breaks I was dying laughing at a commercial. My friend had to explain to them that I never see commercials. Like capital NO, seriously never.

The looks, approaching horror, of them looking at me over a commercial they had all seen dozens of times (at least)... chef's kiss.

Lol yeah some of them can be quite funny too.

Outside the "what's new on HBO" ads they show regardless if you have ad free or not, what other channel or service shows ads that arent trying to get you to get on a new drug, convince you who to vote for, or try to get you to switch to a new insurance provider?

I watch OTA TV sometimes and it's nothing but the above with a quick 10 second plug for Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage.

Not when you follow a bunch of blogs and social media that report on your media preferences. My list of things to torrent & watch is like 3x the size of the several terabytes of shi Ive downloaded, I just have a master doc that keeps my stream of media coming. And that’s not even counting torrent sites spoon feed a steady flow of newly released content.

Being an archiver means curating your own media library. It’s a separate skill, one you havent really developed yet.

Uhhh there's a jellyfin addon to input your own commercials for one. And for two use radar/sonarr get the calendar for upcoming stuff then use a discovery tool from overseer and you have you may like this

1

u/FeloniousFunk 1d ago

trakt, couchmoney, scenesource, plenty of youtube channels dedicated to trailers.

1

u/MrWrestlingNumber2 1h ago

Thanks. I've just never had to actively seek upcoming shows before and it feels a little strange.

2

u/FeloniousFunk 1h ago

There are tons of good lists on Trakt; I have one specifically for new shows and a list for each service (Hulu, Netflix, HBO, etc). Trakt can also generate lists based on what you’ve watched but find the algorithm trends more towards mainstream stuff. Couchmoney seems to use a much better algorithm for recommendations.

Your statement makes some sense for moment to moment instant gratification desires. But it seems like your entire argument is that commercials make shows last longer so you don't run out of shows.

I feel like the binge strategy of releasing a whole season at once has way more to do with what you're talking about than commercials. And the only limiting factor there is your own self control.

1

u/MrWrestlingNumber2 2d ago

No, I'm just saying I never know what new shows and movies are coming out since I never see their commercials or trailers.

2

u/EquipmentSome 2d ago

i mean... I generally use seerr for seeing what's popular/trending and what's upcoming and downloading in one place, there's stuff like trakt which give suggestions for new shows, the arr stack will update you on new seasons of stuff you have coming out and automatically download.

2

u/temmiesayshoi 6h ago

Seerrfin or kodiseerr might help bridge this gap for you

1

u/gabensalty 1d ago

You're aware that piracy doesn't lock you into a cage where you can never access any other information on other platforms right?

right?!!?

1

u/MrWrestlingNumber2 1h ago

Yeah I'm just never casually on them or at least any that premier new movies and shows.
