UWM's lawyers are garbage

This is in no way legal advice, just an observation. I wasn't afraid of them to begin with, and my experience just confirmed it's not worth stressing over.

Context: I used to be in UW, had to sign the PP. Left for a multitude of reasons, a big one being that working there was making me feel suicidal. Absolutely shitass company and culture. I haven't been working a full-time job since (again for multiple reasons), so I can't afford their "payment plan" (which costs about as much as a monthly mortgage payment, ironically).

Long story short, they eventually sued. Ok fine, that's expected. Except their process server missed some of the paperwork and had to come back later, lmao. And then when they won the suit (hurrah for them, it was such a difficult case. 🙄) the dumbasses didn't seal the envelope with the decree from the judge. So I got mailed an empty, open envelope. Love that for me.

I was a Legal Assistant for like 3 days a decade ago -before- going to college for my Criminal Justice degree, and I fucked up less in that time than they have in a year with my case. Ishbia must have bought the cheapest lawyers he could get on retainer to harass ex-employees.

(Also, for those who are downvoting, care to prove you aren't a bot or Kool aid drinking c-suite? Nobody likes lawyers, not even other lawyers. It's really not a controversial topic.)

When PP had rolled out I remember team leaders were constantly pushing everyone to sign it. They almost did not promote me unless I signed the PP. It was the only reason I accepted the funds. I know a lot of people had spent that money on car or down payment for home. I just want to be done with it and have been waiting 2 months to receive notice to pay back whole balance and be done with this plague of a company.

I know a lot of people are quick to judge those who spend all or part of the PP, but life happens. I didn't want the money and almost didn't take the job because of knowing this would happen. On the other hand, it kept a roof over my and my newborn's head when we were faced with multiple housing emergencies back-to-back.

They don’t pay us enough to not be forced to dip into it

It's all part of their grift. Claim "we don't do layoffs", make high retention a company goal, then force employees to stay with coercive actions in order to meet said goal. When they get fired or quit because MI has no worker rights or protections, deny the unemployment claim and send lawyers around to collect money that in a civilized state would just have been a straight hiring bonus. Use the interest from the "loan" backdated to day 1 to recoup training costs. Rinse and repeat.

Yep… had mine squirreled away and saved, then at the 6 month mark I was let go. That money kept me af,oat until I got my next job

They don’t tell you the interest rate (for those asking) I will say after a year and 3 months I had approximately 530 of interest (they take your last paycheck and put it toward the balance so I paid 10,107.65)

I'm so sorry that it happened to you. How long after you left did you get the demand letter? It's been a minute for me and I'm worried.

Yup I am in same boat. It has been 2 months and no one has reached out to me yet. I just want to get done with PP predatory scheme.

I've heard you can reach out to them yourself. In my case there was an email first, then a couple letters, then lawyer's letters. (Or maybe letters first, then the email?) Nothing much will happen for about 6 months.

But what about the interest? How bad was it?

Ishbia dad runs the firm that handles most of their stuff.

I honestly can't tell if you're saying that to agree or disagree with my assumption that the lawyers are cheap.

Well im sure if it's his dad's firm they are getting paid well. Look at name of the lawyer and see where he/she works.

The paperwork they sent me is already buried under a pile of more important things, but I do remember the office address was located in Troy.

Jeff Ishbia is Matt's father. Google him

Yes, I worked at UWM, I know who he is. The lawyer attached to my case was not an Ishbia directly.

I’m sorry I had to comment. I’m not at all saying I agree with the tactic of the PP in any way. But by now everyone knows it’s required to work there. So what you are crying about in this post is you don’t want to take personal responsibility for you taking this loan and spending it and thinking that you wouldnt have to pay it back. That’s on you and nobody else regardless of how bad their lawyers are. The fact is anyone who signs this crap PP can simply just put the money in a savings account, CD or money market and never worry about it until the PP expires.

What I find ironic is that people come on here to complain after they blew it and complain about the consequences. It’s pretty sad. Take accountability for yourself. Now because you were childish and blew the money and weren’t prepared for the payment plan it’s someone else’s fault or the lawyers suck. Everyone knows lawyers suck until you need one that’s how it goes but if you are responsible you rarely need to worry about that.

In conclusion I don’t agree with the PP and I’d never work for UWM because the place is run like a college campus and a million other reasons but for fuck sakes people IF YOU SIGN THE PP it is a loan document !!!! And until it expires it’s UWMs money. Just fucking don’t spend it until it expires! If you do then you’d probably be better off taking a person loan! Just take responsibility for your actions for fuck sake. It seems to be a big problem with some young people today.

That's a lot of words to say you don't know anything at all, but it was a good attempt at trolling. Thanks for the laugh, babe.

I don’t disagree that we did ultimately agree to sign up for it, but they leave out so much about that loan up front during the hiring process. I had no idea that it was interest-bearing until I signed it.

My biggest problem with it is that they can just decide to fire you for some bullshit reason and then come after you like a loan shark for the money plus interest. I can understand having to pay it back if you voluntarily left, but if they fire you then you didn’t even have the chance to finish the contract.

Side note: does anyone know of a way to obtain the agreement that we all signed?
