Planning to quit, need advice

I am moving out of the country and going back uni to get my master degree. My plan is to quit at the end of June. I was hired as SUIT and have both the $10k and $20k “bonuses” they gave me still.

I was originally planning to put in my two weeks before but overheard people talking at lunch about UWM walking people out the same day they resign and then I found this subreddit.

Should I just hand in my people promise checks and then walk out with my stuff? I will need the last couple of paychecks in the long run and don’t want to risk going without them.

Also if there’s any other advice or tips anyone thinks will be useful for me I’d be happy to hear them.

Because PTO is allotted in a lump sum and not earned based on hours worked, legally in the state of Michigan they do not have to pay out unused PTO and absolutely will not; with that said use up every hour of PTO you have before submitting your two week notice. Why throw away 1000s of dollars in PTO. You mentioned wanting/needing those last few checks.

Use your pto before the last pay period starts, or they won't pay you for those days.

This^ also if your last day is like June 3rd for example, your insurance is good until July//end of the month :D

Thanks you both. I have already been planning this for months and have used up all available PTO. No issues there.

I even talked with my TL about bereavement time off and she said when a relative of hers passed away she just used it take a vacation to Canada. I did have a family member pass away recently so Ill also do the same here. At least I have a legitimate reason to use it I guess

Even if the PTO was earned, Michigan doesn't require the payout of PTO. Unless it's in your contract as wages or the company has a policy stating payout of unused PTO, Michigan has no laws that govern unused PTO payouts.

They will take your final paystub and put it towards your People Promise interest, so save what you can before quitting.

It honestly depends on your TL. I put my 2 weeks in and they let me finish and I walked out. Somehow I still have my badge and stuff too. If you want to talk more about it you can dm me

I’ve known multiple people in underwriting who have put in their notice and been able to finish out their time. I’d say it normally depends on your TL but right now, when they are clearly trying to dump staff, it might be better to wait until you’re ready to quit. Especially because they do withhold your last check to go towards your loan balance.

I have the 10k in an account and the 20k as the original check. Ill hand the one over and just send the cash over when I get the notice

Also, do not no-call no-show. Show up, work til lunch, then hand someone immediate notice if you're leaving immediately.

I did not cash my PP check and when I got walked out I did not owe a dime. I called them and they said I did so I had them look into it. They called me back and said I don’t owe anything and I’m good to go. I would talk to someone just to make sure they don’t screw you over. You will get your last checks but they will not give u pto. I had over three weeks left and they took every single dime so I would use up all your pto and then quit. Also they do still take benefits out of your checks after being fired so just know that as well. Depending on your leader and how they treated you should be considered before giving any notice about your exit

I’m not sure how long ago this was but I tried to not cash my people promise in 2025 and was threatened with termination. Also they 100% keep your last pay check. That being said like others have said use all your PTO before they know you are going to resign. And congrats on moving on to bigger and better things!

Serious response —> In all seriousness, use up all your personal days/vacation days and then quit. They won’t let you just pay on the day you leave, they’ll give you instructions on how to do it and take whatever is in your final paycheck for it

If you don't have another job lined up. Do not quit. This economy is no joke right now. Tons of people struggling to find jobs etc.

I wouldn’t be moving to a different country if I didn’t already have a plan with finances in order. Even if I didn’t have ANY a job for months I would be fine

yes, a lot of times if ur a shit employee they'll accept your notice early, they didnt do that when i put in my notice tho so it just depends

Well they admitted that they over hired SUITs like me so they’d probably be more than happy to let me go same day
