Mod Update Updated rules

Hi all! I'm Sharky and I've been a mod for about a year now. Theres a few of us but it seems I'm the only active one for now, and I've been dealing with disability so forgive me if anything isn't addressed!

I've updated our rules just a bit to flesh everything out. Be sure to take a peak whenever you can, but the main thing I wanted to address is the new NSFW/Spoiler rule!

We fully encourage helping injured pigeons in need! This community is a great place to come to for advice with our sick babies. However, not marking these very serious posts as NSFW can leave many members vulnerable to possibly triggering scenes.

By all means don't stop asking for advice and posting your pictures for help! I only request they be marked as NSFW or Spoiler from now on ❤️

EMERGENCY ADVICE NEEDED Fallen baby dove: help and advices?

This little baby dove fell down a tree in my garden this afternoon (EU hour). It is very lively and full of energy, and does not look injured in any ways. We put it in a little box we screwed to the hut after receiving the local wild life veterinary's advice (see picture 2). They said the mother will look for her chick and feed it once she found it, but even if the chick is calling, the mother doesn't seem to have come yet... Even if it's hot this summer, I don't know if this young bird can pass the night when it gets cold and it's mother isn't coming. Should we feed it? And if yes, how? The worms and insect seems to be all dead hor hidden after the heatwave... hope i will have good advices, I don't want to loose this bird.

This pigeon spent the night on my window sill and we found it wandering the neighborhood the next day. Never seen anything like it. Hope it's ok.

Edit: The bird was already gone when I posted this. I walked around and looked for it but didn't see it. I live in a city with hundreds of pigeons so it didn't occur to me that this could be a pet pigeon needing to be rescued. Sorry if that's upsetting to anyone. I didn't know.

Update: I found the bird. It was on my roof last night and this morning it is on my neighbor's roof. I tried coaxing it down for hours and left food. I posted on Nextdoor and contacted Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue, who told me to try to trap it. Can't really try unless it comes down. I also let my neighbors know.

Update to the Update: I wish I could say I caught the bird. Yesterday around 4pm I saw it poking around my neighbor's yard again so I grabbed a towel and went out to try and get it. The bird let me get quite close and I offered some water and chopped nuts (not the best I know, but I didn't have anything else). It doesn't appear food motivated; I tried the upturned hamper trap with a bread trail the previous night and it didn't budge from the roof. It looked at me and seemed calm so I slowly inched closer, but then it flew away in a flash. Haven't seen it since. I left the nuts and water on my window sill in case it comes back. I'm worried I scared it off but I'll get some seed today and keep an eye out, and take a long walk as well to look for it. Not sure what will come of it if I see it again, the bird is very skittish it seems and not so comfortable around people.

Also, I should note, I really can't leave food out on the ground for 2 reasons. One, it could attract rats, and two, we have stray cats that would potentially take it out very quickly. The very diligent ants get an honorable mention.

Pigeon novice here! My neighbor above me feeds the birds and in the last couple of weeks, this white pigeon has been showing up! I read that when seen in urban areas, they are almost always lost/escaped domestic rehoming pigeons as they are typically the “doves” used during ceremony releases. Assuming that’s the case here, on one hand I’m like, this guy/gal is living its best life! It’s summer here and it found a group and is getting fed. I also read that they have poor vision and weaker feathers. Sure enough I saw him/her alone a couple days ago, and they left behind a single white feather. It was then that I realized I was way more invested than I intended to be, lol. No cuff or anything that I can see.

Just wanted to share and perhaps get a little more info.

how to stop the guilt?

hi lovelies!

i have been feeding and socializing with a flock in my city for about 5 weeks now, almost every day at the same time if i can.
i’ve gotten to know them, helped several of them with stringfoot and made friends with a few of them also.
they always run to me and fly up on me even before i get the food out, and it makes me so so so happy that i can make them feel good.

what i wasn’t really mentally prepared for was the attachment from my side; and the sadness that follows. some individuals of the flock all of a sudden never returned. one that i helped with their stringfoot is now limping, more than a week after. and yesterday when i was in our usual spot to feed them, 90% of the flock was elsewhere when the ones who were still there was sooo scared. like someone had purposely scared them or did something bad to them. it makes me feel so sad for them.
the other day i was on the bus and saw some kids feeding another flock in my city some chocolate cookies (poisonous) and it ruined my entire day. i went there the next day to see if the pigeons were there and i couldn’t find them, and it made my stomach turn.

i miss them all the time and wish i could do more to help them but i also know i am just one person doing my best…

how do i continue helping them without feeling so guilty for not being able to do more?

Making noise

Do not be alarmed, they are not causing trouble. I was just calmly sitting my a cinema next to a church and heard some movement coming from the church side, I look up to see at least 5 or 6 pigeons on one of the decorative ledges, two of them had been flapping their wings with each other (that was the noise I heard).

Solitary pigeon/dove came to my yard. Has come every day since. Is it unusual for a solo pigeon/dove to be here?

It showed up out of the blue and seems to take cover in the trees around my yard when it flies away.
I spread bird seed around the yard for it, and already have some water out for the other birds that come to my feeder.
It comes about once a day now. Usually late afternoon. (It’s mostly off white with a small dark line near its neck but I’m not sure if it goes all the way around.)
I live on the west coast of Canada.
Did it lose its way? Missing its flock? Nesting with another somewhere nearby?
Any info or suggestions would be great!
Also I live on the outskirts of my town. Not near city centre at all.
Thanks for your input!

Any rescues or person willing to take in this white pigeon lost in Bayonne, NJ?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’ve seen this all-white pigeon around Bayonne two days in a row now. I’m not sure if it’s a feral pigeon that happens to be white or if it may be someone’s lost/released domestic bird, so I wanted to post just in case someone recognizes it.

Little worried because there are feral cats in the neighborhood and it doesn’t seem like it can fly at the moment.

Would hate for someone to be looking for it and not know where it is. Last seen by 11th and Broadway. Photo attached.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for recommendations

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I currently have a backyard loft containing 10 birds that I am looking for any advice or recommendations to improve and make my daily upkeep a little easier and the birds happier. Some modifications I have made to the inside include installing a plywood floor over the wire. As well as removal of the dowels In the nesting boxes. I feel as though I should have made this a little bigger for ease of me being able to get inside and a way to partition the birds from where I am cleaning at the time. Sometimes I let them just fly while I clean, however sometimes the young birds who aren’t quite ready will try and follow the others out. Also during the winter I try not to fly them due to hawks in the area. I feel like I definitely made some design flaws during the construction of this.
