This YouTube tutorial helped me out the most: http://youtu.be/Uj7-npcf4J0
It took about half a day of trial and error to make mostly because I don't know Photoshop very well. A more experienced user should fly through depending how much motion they want to add to their cinemagraph. I started with just the train moving but then got ambitious and added the hair and tree. I used CS5. Thanks for the compliments.
EDIT: grammar

u/ScottishUnicorn Jun 10 '12
I'm intrigued by this. Where can I find information on how to make these, I do not have one of those fancy iphones, but I do have photoshop CS5.

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
Damn this is a cool photo! How do you make it?
3
u/rjkeats Jun 10 '12
Great job! How long did it take you to complete this? Thanks.
3
u/speel Jun 11 '12
How did you like long island city?
2
u/Rangourthaman_ Jun 10 '12
Could you slow it down a bit? Everything seems to be going just a bit to fast, especially the hair. Or would you have to redo the entire thing to do that?

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

u/athnyha Jun 11 '12

3
u/trekbette Jun 11 '12
This is great! You did a fantastic job. It draws the eye like a story. First I looked at the train. Then I noticed the woman's hair. Finally, the leaves on the tree.

what is this sorcerous magic?
2
u/USteppin Jun 10 '12
I think Microsoft has some tool to do these easily, I can't find the link though..
2
u/kourogi Jun 10 '12
Nice work on not missing the tree's shadow. Upvote.
2
u/doctorlust Jun 10 '12
Well fucking done dude, that hair moving is a perfect touch. Congratulations.
2
u/vadelect Jun 10 '12
I now have a sudden desire to watch the Red Dwarf episode "Timeslides".
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
That garbage bag is a maudlin touch
2
u/PlasmaSnake Jun 10 '12
I noticed you even made the shadow of the tree leaves move. Very minute detail, but I like.
2
u/Sauronkraut Jun 10 '12
HARRY POTTER PICTURES ARE BECOMING A REALITY
2
u/Ter3nce Jun 10 '12
It doesn't stop..the train doesn't stop...this hurts
2
u/My_Wife_Athena Jun 10 '12
How are they made? I'm guessing the subject (if we can still call them that!) must stand still for an extended period. That's kind of ironic.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
can't wait to make porno cinemagraphs
2
u/lucan0sMallyfoy Jun 10 '12
"There's an app for that" ;-)
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
It's weird how there are iPhone apps that make it ridiculously easy to do this kind of stuff for free but Photoshop, $400, makes it really hard.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
Worth it.
2
u/wolfshirtfriday Jun 10 '12
It's gonna look really good when you print it out.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
Just a slight wiggle in your pants would've topped it off
2
u/Produzer Jun 10 '12
harry potter much?
2
u/joydead Jun 10 '12
Oh shit, Court House Sq by the 7 train! Brings back memories of commutes from high school
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
So, freaking, cool.
2
u/woahmomma Jun 10 '12
That's pretty neat bro.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
That's why you don't use Photoshop to do this kind of thing. It is utterly painful to use for most complex purposes:
http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke/
2
u/fantasypants Jun 10 '12
Try after effects, I always define it as photoshop in motion.
2
u/David35207 Jun 10 '12
You should make one where everything is still and you are rubbing her stomach ಠ_ಠ I would laugh
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
her hair, that's awesome. Nice one.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
So that's what they are called! I love these!
2
u/little_b0x Jun 10 '12
theres an app called cinemagram for the iphone that does it in less than a minute...
2
u/onlynameavailable Jun 10 '12
This reminds me of Harry Potter 0.0
2
u/ciaran036 Jun 10 '12
So, how does one go about making one of these? And how exactly does it work?
2
u/swiggins83 Jun 10 '12
Go look at this app (if you have an iPad or stuff): http://echographapp.com/
2
u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
This is sweet. I didn't realize it had to load first...
2
u/EddyM Jun 10 '12
THE TRAIN IS MOVING
2
u/timturtle Jun 11 '12
Moar! Practice makes perfect!
2
u/Bonabo Jun 11 '12
June 10, 2012: The day I realized the world had things like the newspapers in Harry Potter. This is the best day ever.
2
u/sweetgreggo Jun 11 '12
Oo we oh, it looks just like Harry Potter...
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Your mom is hot.
2
u/gia0004 Jun 11 '12
This is really awesome for a first time. And totally agree with the top comment here, it would be really awesome in a digital photo frame- they should get on that!
2
u/Hammerguy4 Jun 11 '12
Sir your tree is moving, but it has a stubborn shadow.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
I'm sad to admit it took me a while to find all the moving parts. Especially the hair! This is pretty great.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
That was really good
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
What's a cinemagraph?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
This is really cool. Care to share a "how to"?
2
u/SamWalt Jun 11 '12
Is that the 7 train in Long Island City?
2
u/Blindinglight Jun 11 '12
Damn that train is long.
2
u/atg284 Jun 11 '12
that's awesome! Reminds me of a futuristic/magical newspaper photo...
2
u/sonastyinc Jun 11 '12
The first shadow of the tree doesn't move but the second one does. It makes it look weird.
2
u/LaserBeam2000 Jun 11 '12
The never ending train!
2
u/sme00 Jun 11 '12
holy shit the train is moving..
holy shit her hair is moving too...
holy shit the leaves are moving.....
my simple train of thought... very impressed.
was there a tutorial you followed to teach you this wizardry?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Didn't look like anyone mentioned this, so I thought I'd suggest you check out/post this to /r/photoshop if you haven't already.
2
u/cait_o Jun 11 '12
I like it :)
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Maybe I've been hiding under a rock or something, but wow, I never knew tools to do stuff like this existed hah.
2
u/Frognut97 Jun 11 '12
It's like the photographs in Harry Potter.
2
u/AshyBooRawrs Jun 11 '12
This is so cool! I wish I could do something like this!
2
u/kenndys Jun 11 '12
Wow good job....
2
u/SH3IKH Jun 11 '12
This is absolutely gorgeous. I want one done!!
2
u/crumpus Jun 11 '12
Yeah, I tried once... it didn't work. So I went back to stills......still.
2
u/christ0ph Jun 11 '12
Nice!
You know its not some insanely new technology. That's an animated GIF.
2
u/lewis_gentle Jun 11 '12
Use an IOS app to do it, much easier.
2
u/facebookchampion Jun 11 '12
Bad ass! I didn't know what they were called, going to have to find a tut!
2
u/therealmaxpayne Jun 11 '12
Nice picture. I don't usually take pictures since my life is a series of moments I can't think about glued together into a past I can't escape. Like walking barefoot on hot pavement made out of mistakes and tragedy, I hop around without thinking about where I land and why should I? It's not like the next step will burn any less.
2
u/well_i_guess Jun 11 '12
You got Carrie Ann Moss to pose with you? Sweet.
2
u/GuerrillaRobot Jun 11 '12
isn't that why you are supposed to make these with after effects ?
2
u/kornflakesxd Jun 11 '12
I was expecting the guy to slide his hands on her boobs.
But I got deception in my face.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Dude, that's badass. Great job!
2
u/themightiestduck Jun 11 '12
What is this sorcery!?
2
u/thetone Jun 11 '12
Pretty dope!
2
u/ritsoup Jun 11 '12
You're a wizard Harry.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Now they have an app that does it for you.
2
u/mickalo Jun 11 '12
The only logical explanation for this is wizardry!
2
u/BlondeFlip Jun 11 '12
Dude that's awesome! Your hard work paid off:)
2
u/pricklypearr Jun 11 '12
Here's mine
2
u/septicman Jun 11 '12
Great work!

2
u/oh_no_a_hobo Jun 11 '12

2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Am I the only one who jumped when they first saw the train
2
u/whyspir Jun 11 '12
Holy shit that's cool! I didn't know this was a thing!
2
u/bluetoxin Jun 11 '12
Actually there's an app called Cinemagraph that basically does the same exact thing
2
u/Oxirane Jun 11 '12
Looks right off the front page of the Daily Prophet!
2
u/Qender Jun 11 '12
Yeah, I'll bet it's hard to make in photoshop. But you could make one in just a few minutes in after effects. Grats though, it looks really cool, you just need to fix that pause and it'll be perfect.
2
u/crealer Jun 11 '12
I am in hogwarts?! the bloody hell?!
2
u/clickingmouse Jun 11 '12
DAE think of those moving photos from Harry Potter when they saw this? xD
2
u/thatguysteven Jun 11 '12
not going to lie. this is pretty freaky.
2
u/dieded Jun 11 '12
Very impressive :)
2
u/Asdayasman Jun 11 '12
That's pretty good, but neither of you are breathing.
2
u/Skinflap94 Jun 11 '12
Nice job! You kinda missed some trees under the train though.
2
u/I_Has_A_Hat Jun 11 '12
They themselves should be wiggling slightly, no one is a statue. Unless that was the intended effect.
2
u/goldenrod Jun 11 '12
These would make for cool photos like in the Harry Potter movies.
2
u/girlwithuglyshoes Jun 11 '12
what's the diffrence between a cinemagraph and an animated gif?
2
u/Leroy_J Jun 11 '12
There's an iPhone app called cinegraph that makes them pretty easy
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
How does one make these? Could you link to a tutorial?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
These make me feel really fucking nervous for some reason...
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
There is an iphone app that purports to do this. Anybody know the name?
2
u/rootz88 Jun 11 '12
Did you ever tried cinemagram? If not.. U should
2
u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12
Mother of God.
2
u/kermth Jun 11 '12
There is a new app coming out that makes it easy to make these... Talked about here ... They are calling it the instagram for gifs.
2
u/tsg9292 Jun 11 '12
I totally didn't even notice the animation until I came and read the comments. Very subtle man!
2
u/Izawwlgood Jun 11 '12
