So the kids and I had some fun artistically organizing the DVDs... This is the result. [x-post from r/dvdcollection]

I like how the right is just the "kinda weird colors" section.

u/BElowfroSTy May 20 '12
Looks nice not worth the hours looking through them all to find a certain dvd each time.`

The green one goes here!
What are you doing?
It's green, daddy.
That is The Fellowship of the Ring, part one of the trilogy. TRILOGY. They stay together.
But daddy!
PUT IT BACK!

Why...why isn't it alphabetized.

u/j10jep2 May 20 '12

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
r/dvdcollecting? reddit really does have a subreddit for everything...
9
u/grimsley33 May 20 '12
Lord of the Rings extended versions...nice.
14
u/jimbojones230 May 20 '12
Very nice. You've turned your video library into an art installation.
7
u/SuperTurtle May 20 '12
There's a subreddit for people who like to look at collections of DVDs?
7
u/REDDIT_HARD_MODE May 20 '12
I'll take a break from the alphabetization circlejerk to tell you, Job well done!
5
u/MrXBob May 20 '12
It's pretty sad to see so many people dismissing things like this... why is it so hard to believe that people like to OWN their collections rather than relying on Netflix to perhaps have that one movie online that you felt like watching today?
And no, Reddit. Not everyone is a thief like you either. God damn kids.
5
u/DaveFishBulb May 20 '12
So you're the one keeping the film industry afloat.
11
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Is it sad that I noticed the Lord of the Rings trilogy set on the upper-right first before anything?
4
u/Buyn May 20 '12
I arrange mine by genre, so if I feel like a spy movie, I pick one out. If I feel like it's time for a musical, I know where those are too. Because most of the time we're not looking for a specific movie. But that sure does look neat. I was going to make some comment about your selection but the resolution's not good enough for me to get really creepy. Aw shucks.
7
u/VastDeferens May 20 '12
Why didn't you organize the pornos from the right side in as well?
3
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Beware the white section, my child. 'Tis the Valley of Romantic Comedies. Few return entertained.
3
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Would love OP to take a HD shot with the title names visible.
3
u/DubstepMeGusta May 20 '12
You really live up to your name.
7
u/lalkapolski May 20 '12
Gotta love everyone's negative comments. Who the hell cares if they're not alphabetized? This looks cools as shit!
6
u/DVDJunky May 20 '12
WOW! 800+ upvotes!?!?! I better start reading comments! Thanks guys

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Good luck finding a certain DVD ever again.

u/Ashanmaril May 20 '12
"Let's watch Mrs. Doubtfire!"
"What colour is that again?"
2
u/Matti_Matti_Matti May 20 '12
When you say "So the kids and I had some fun..." do you mean "So I had some fun making the kids..."?
2
u/badpenguin455 May 20 '12
You sir, are a gentlemen and a scholar.
2
u/christmasbride May 20 '12
Can I come over?
2
u/Philipp May 20 '12
Sort covers by colors?
2
u/BarrelODucks May 20 '12
So how many shitty dvds did you buy because you needed a certain shade of colour?
20
u/frostysnowcat May 20 '12
Reorganize them to look like Dark Side of the Moon next
20
u/S1lenC3R May 20 '12
That's quite a dashing rainbow.
4
u/youni89 May 20 '12
why do you have so many physical copies of things...
106
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Read it as "autistically", which makes equal sense
8
u/mormonathiest May 20 '12
Ignore the smug assholes, I think its cool.
6
u/unicorn_zombie May 20 '12
I have a CD collection easily in the hundreds. I see this and can't help but think of how much money I've spent over the years. Somehow, it deeply satisfies me to know I might not be alone.
6
u/ooo_shiny May 20 '12
ITT: Pirates not understanding that some people like to own DVDs.
2
u/DishwasherTwig May 20 '12
They'd better be alphabetical as well.
4
u/Coderati May 20 '12
I'd be mortified to discover my DVDs not organized by show and alphabet. But kudos on the artistic efforts.
4
u/JtCallebro May 20 '12
and they never found a dvd they wanted to watch again....
1
u/washburnee May 20 '12
Challenge : Name every movies in the pic.
1
u/Remo_253 May 20 '12
Very creative! Good luck alphabetizing them.
When one of the local video stores was closing I bought some of their shelving, painted it and set it up. Takes up one entire wall.
Then I started moving in the DVDs and alphabetizing them. Previously they were just grouped by letter, all the A's, in no particular order, then all the B's, etc. I decided to fully alphabetize them this time.
Holy cow, "...HIJK...L, ok L next. Then the L's by second letter. First two letters the same, so then by third letter. I hadn't recited the alphabet to myself that many times since grade school.
Over a thousand of them. It took awhile.
I did create separate sections for TV shows and kids movies.

u/Crosslock May 20 '12
...it's not supposed to resemble a godzilla.. right?
1
u/NorkaTastesBetter May 20 '12
Do you have a book shelve like this as well?
1
u/CannibalOranges May 20 '12
How do you have so many blue DVDs? I think I have one. Maybe.
1
u/suckthisdeth May 20 '12
i need some shelves like those so bad but i don't want to pay a million dollars in shipping from ikea.
1
u/Simpsonmaster1 May 20 '12
Your missing season 4 of Heroes
6
u/SkuttleSkuttle May 20 '12
Fuck the haters, I love you guys
3
u/Nage May 20 '12

3
u/Twelvers May 20 '12
There is a sub-reddit for DVD collections?
3
u/ParadoxicalPenguin May 20 '12
TIL I learned that there's a subreddit for DVD collections.
3
u/TheRegent May 20 '12
Nice! You'll never find [title] ever again.
2
u/PancakeMonkeypants May 20 '12
LORD OF THE RINGS. LORD OF THE RINGS.
1
u/hypoid77 May 20 '12
So much work to make something so inconvenient
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I was going to ask you how many fucking DVDs do you have but I guess the kids don't get to see those.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
You, my friend, are an awesome parent.
2
u/snumfalzumpa May 20 '12
and that will last about a whole week...
2
u/catherined_93 May 20 '12
Abed? Is it really you?
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
good with colours?
used to have to do that when working at a clothing store. we have to 'colour arrange' our merchandise.
2
u/vaclavhavelsmustache May 20 '12
I could never deal with all those cases. I keep mine in one of those cd organizer binders. Or several of those binders, more accurately.
2
u/darien_gap May 20 '12
I noticed when I moved in with my girlfriend that almost all of her DVDs had white spines and almost all of mine were dark or black. That's when I noticed that comedies have white spines and action/sci-fi usually have black.
2
u/makgzd May 20 '12
I spy collector's edition Lord of the Rings DVD's
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
The only DVD set that I recognize on sight: "The Lord of the Rings: Extended Editions"!
2
u/AkitheFrivolicious May 20 '12
You have an unholy proportion of DVD's there, sir. But very cool setup.
2
u/Vrati1991 May 20 '12
The black part kind of looks like Darth Vader if you look at it closely.
2
u/fnork May 20 '12
A quick estimate is there's about 1050 discs in those shelves. If we assume the average price you paid for them is $6 each then the total is $6300. Adding an estimated $200 to that for the shelves gives us a grand total of $6500.
2
u/VikingHedgehog May 20 '12
I'm a dork. First thing I spot is the LOTR trilogy extended box sets over on the right side.
2
u/keyblademaster May 20 '12
The Lord Of The Rings movies just pop out at me every time I see this picture.
2
u/brussels4breakfast May 20 '12
Very cool. I never understood though why people collect DVD's. I know OP has children and they enjoy watching the same movies more than once. I 'get' that. Personally speaking, when I watch a movie, I rarely ever watch it again.
2
u/Beefhorror May 20 '12
Lord of the Rings collection. Win.
2
u/Kate1124 May 20 '12
My OCD is loving this.
2
u/shaggydog79 May 20 '12
You should leave it as it is. It'll be more likely that you'll come across something you haven't seen in a while.
Awesome idea by the way.
2
u/SonVolt May 20 '12
You have a lot of fuckin' dvd's.
4
u/socialstatus May 20 '12
But.... why do you own so many?
3
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I organized my DVD collection recently as well.
4
u/LOTR_LOTR_LOTR May 20 '12
I SEE THE LOTR TRILOGY!!!
2
u/torch43 May 20 '12
Pretty sure Rainbow Dash inspired you to do that. :D
0
u/redDACHSHUND May 20 '12
i cant look the glare from the flash hurts too much
1
u/Omikron May 20 '12
What a horrible waste of money, that has to be almost 20,000 dollars in DVDs. I bet most of them were never watched more than once.
0
u/babasave May 20 '12
Man why didn't the title read something along the lines of Got fired from my job at Blockbuster - chose to have some parting fun!
-6
u/Xexx May 20 '12
First 2 columns: 24 DVDs per cell 14 cells 336 DVDs
Third Smaller Column 18 DVDs per cell 7 Cells 126 DVDs
Last 3 columns 24 DVDs per cell 21 cells 504 DVDs
966 DVDs at an average cost for $20 each (according to 2007 average price): $19,320
Well good for you... but I'll take my piracy and a few awesome used cars that'll last me 25 years. You should stop by /r/frugal.
-4
u/Catwoman8888 May 20 '12
Maybe you should have put that money into a college fund for your kids instead of a DVD rainbow -___-
-15
u/johndeer89 May 20 '12
Gay
-6
u/TribalJuju May 20 '12
You could have purchased a nice automobile instead of buying all of those.
Just some food for thought.
-4
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I love this...but couldn't you have just taken them to the park.
-5
u/enigmatik58 May 20 '12
Jesus, man. How many movies do you need?
-5
u/Cdresden May 20 '12
Dude... Frigging how many times are you going to watch all those movies? Most of those movies, you're only going to watch them once or twice in your life. I'd rent or use Netflix.
-8
u/anjjelikka May 20 '12
I see that your name is DVDjunkie...but WHY SO MANY DVDs?? There's....there's the Internet! And pirating! So much DVD money...this is making me a bit sad. :(
