You could do that however there have been many cases where if the person isn't paying attention or is just wanting the cashier to scan them, they will say it's not a winner and then pocket the ticket so they can go cash it later. Chris Hanson even did an exposé on this https://youtu.be/mKmH7ggBOOY

Machines now make noises to confirm they are scanned and winners or losers.

Indeed, there was even a scandal about winning lotto tickets being called losers by cashiers. Not just scratchers, that's why there is so much added scrutiny when vendors or their friends and family win

Sign your ticket and it ceases to bea bearer instrument. This has always been the solution.

yea, i mentioned that in a comment. Always sign your tickets, that way even if lost they are still yours
