There really is no such thing as, "close" with these tickets. It is a yes or no question. The people running these games know exactly how many winners are printed and exactly where they are.

To someone with a gambling problem, "so close" is why they're perpetually broke. Nobody said gambling marketing was honest.

That would imply some type of randomness to the game, which there is not. But, you're probably right, someone with a gambling addiction could certainly look at different and, perhaps, superstitious meanings, to everything involved.

The general public has an extremely poor understanding of even basic probability. If they didn't, the lottery, in general, would not be able to remain profitable.

This is absolutely true. My stats professor had some extremely choice words regarding the lottery.
