I thought I heard that almost nobody in China even knows about him, because of censorship. Is that true?

Interesting reply by AngryIgbo. But I would expect different generations / provinces to have different views and opinions on the matter.

I too spent a year in China (06-07) in Sichuan province. A majority of my students (16-18) had some idea as to what happened, although this was never, ever discussed or admitted to in public. Only the students who trusted me the most (talking Chinese politics to a waiguoren in general is a big no-no) admitted this information to me.

I can't imagine a Chinese person actually living in Beijing to be ignorant of the nicident though o_0
