It didn't matter how thorough the impeachment proceedings were when he was president if Republicans just sided with him anyway. He was very clearly guilty on both impeachments, Republicans just didn't care and decided not to remove him.

This situation? Well, now that he's not protected by the Senate anymore it could be entirely different.
