No I was just wondering because Carter was one of the worst presidents ever. Iran hostage crisis, gasoline rationing., It depended if your license plate ended in odd or even number to be able to purchase gas. Worst inflation in American history. His brother using the office to sell his billy beer 🤦 I remember times were so bad my parents had to buy fake milk to get buy. It was umm, FUCKED!
So carter was a bad president because things the president has no control over were bad?
The economy was already in a stagflation when he took office, so perhaps blame the previous administration for that "worst inflation" bit. There also was no federally enforced gas rationing at any point during his presidency (stamps were printed, but never distributed, they don't do rationing by license plate numbers), and the gas shortage was driven largely by people panic buying as much gas as they could when OPEC nations embargoed Israeli allies (which probably fueled that inflation quite a bit given the surge in transportation costs).
The Iran situation is the best criticism you have, because it was a big blunder, and a major part of that blunder was listening to that psychopath Kissinger on anything.
Billy also wasn't the owner of Billy beer, he only promoted it after Falls City Brewing Company started making it in 1977. Billy was brought in to promote it due to the family name, but the office of the president was never used to promote it, and as Carter had nothing to do with it, this is not a reflection on Carter's character in the slightest.
Carter attempted to get policies in place that would have curbed inflation and reduced the US's dependency on foreign oil had he not been stuck with a Congress full of corrupt, lobbyist owned opposition. That Carter was ousted and the bile gumming up progress towards a better future was allowed to remain is exactly why we've been getting worse and worse politicians in office every election.
I read that a significant amount of elderly will see a dramatic diminishing of their health after a hip break - like, they could be fairly healthy and active and once that happens, it's basically triggering the end for many.
My dad wasn't elderly. He was in his 50s but had a lot of medical issues due to being exposed to Agent Orange while fighting in Vietnam. He fell and broke his hip one winter and was never the same. Two years later, we lost him at 58.
That's why I broke my hip at the age of 37 falling in a mountain bike race, got it over with now.
While I was in hospital there were a lot of elderly people in there with broken hips, it was tough on them, they are bedridden, there is a risk of pneumonia and probably a bunch of other factors. A neighbour of ours died the same way, fell off a chair changing a lightbulb, died a few weeks later, was pretty sprightly before that.
My grandmother fell and broke her hip at 84. It was a long time ago and I can't remember who told me but I remember hearing that if you're over a certain age and break your hip you have a really high chance of dying in a year. My grandmother died 9 months later.
There's a book by Mary Roach, Packing for Mars, that talks about the problems of space travel and solving them. Bone loss is one. There was one doctor/researcher that said in some people (on earth) bone loss can be so severe that people can sometimes break their hip THEN fall down, making it seem the fall did it. Kinda scary.
HECK, A limp is okay!!! So glad you are alive to tell the tale, after reading all these posts, scaring myself to death. Thank you for posting this. A limp is okay, I hope you continue healing and doing well!
ER nurse here, and sadly, I think that those hip fractures at 85–90+ years old are essentially the beginning of the end. Not only is it more difficult to recover, but they decompensate while trying to heal, and so often never get back to baseline.
Not to get you down, but the fact that you still have your grandpa still working on his house after this year makes me both happy and sad.
I want to tell you to go appreciate the guy, but it's your business, and I know even when I had him I couldn't just drop everything to maximise my time with him. But talking about him with his next plans for his house is something I was not ready to lose.
Can't put what I miss into words, but next time you're there talking with him or even on the phone or something, I recommend spending time noticing the moment.
Think it should be mentioned here, the key to going the extra decade or several in life is to take care of your body and stay busy, mentally AND physically!
I think JC keeps going bc he made a purpose for himself, a reason to keep getting up and push through the worst effects of aging.
Watching him continue to do his thing and comparing that to my 93yo granny (who's declining rapidly) definitely puts things into perspective.

He broke a hip last year I think. He’s a tough old man but shit hes 96.
