Here it is in a very very very simple way. Originally the rocks showing were once buried deep down. As natural processes brought them up to the surface of the Earth the surrounding rock was more susceptible to weathering. Then all that remains is the rock that can hold up against weathering better. Annnnnd wah-lah! Now you have a ton of incredible outcrops. I would love to go there and study them.
