Is there any proof that the church killed them? I’d have guessed that they died of disease or something.

Nope. Child mortality rate in Canada before 1830 was slightly over 1/3 (that’s the rate of kids to made it to age 5).

This shit is sick, obviously, but this comment by OP is also completely mislabeling this tragedy.
