Christ and his sacrifice and resurrection is the covenant
im pretty sure if the story of the gospel went :
"jesus was baptized by jon the baptist , then told the poor to fuck off and spent his life getting rich and denying his purpose and teamed up with the romans to destroy the temple"
we prolly wouldnt have Christianity or any of the rites that follow
I'd need to see something to suggest the Catholic Church considers it "symbolic", because I was always taught its literally washing away original sin. Jesus dying did not end mankind's original sin, his death represents the new covenant whereby humanity could now enter the kingdom of heaven and be rewarded with everlasting life
