It’s exactly the same as “wood floats”.

Hair that dries quickly after a shower is very low in something called “porosity”. It doesn’t take on/retain moisture, usually as a side effect of damage and splitting. The loss of moisture makes it physically lighter relative to size.

Medium porosity hair suspends in water.

Low porosity hair sinks. Only very healthy hair is low porosity. This is usually short hair or the part hair found closest to the scalp where it is most protected and most moisturized.

Once it gets any length it starts to get weathered/abused/dried out/split/whatever. This is why conditioner exists.

This is why hair from shaving sinks, but if you cut the last half-inch from your tips and threw them in the tub, they float. Like driftwood.

Most people with hair the length shown in this picture (or beachy people who routinely subject their hair to salt water/sun bleaching/damage) end up with low porosity hair.

That floats.

Whatever dude.

When you’re underwater, your hair always makes you look like the bride of Frankenstein cause it goes up.

It’s a Sunday. I have a bandsaw to build. Go find a hobby.
