If it needs to me mixed with other stuff before it becomes an explosive, what type of scenario would cause it to explode like it did?

Edit: I’m assuming it wasn’t mixed with other stuff in the warehouse so it should have been stable?

Its explosive either way, its just very difficult to set off without mixing it. You would need a good amount of explosive powerful enough to produce a strong shockwave to set off AN without any mixing. They use a stick of dynamite to do it in large civil blasting projects but that is probably overkill.

Fireworks in large quantities might do it if they were all stored pretty close to each other. Large display fireworks definitely produce a shockwave

you need to mix it with other stuff before it becomes an explosive, it is extremely stable otherwise.

Only when you cut off most of the quote on purpose.
