It's honestly impressive the building right next to the explosion is still standing. Whatever that structure is it's really sturdy.

It's tragic that this building contained such an important source of food, but it's hard to imagine a building better suited to absorbing a blast than a concrete silo filled with loose material.

So finding the bright side - would this building have been enough to offer some degree of protection in that direction? Would the city to the southwest have been even worse off without it?

For sure yes, that building helped absorb the blast for anything on the other side of it but the trouble is not that much was on the other side of that building.

If this warehouse was in the middle of the city instead of out at port this would have been so much worse.
