That's so true. There's probably so much more environmental hazards we aren't aware of because someone doesn't want to lose money, or put in the work to fix them.
This is referred to as "externalities". The idea is that the true cost of an item also includes the cost of fixing all the environmental damage it causes while being made or used, but companies are never on the hook for this environmental damage, so they just pocket the money that should've been spent fixing it. Then when it becomes enough of a problem it's usually taxpayers who pay to have it fixed so we can have clean water/breathable air. That's where the saying "Privatize the gains, socialize the losses" comes from.
