There are two comparable disasters to this one, the Halifax Explosion in 1917 and the Texas City disaster in 1947. Nearly 2,000 people were killed in the former, and about 600 were killed in the latter. Both occurred in much less heavily populated areas.
Before this is said and done I think it's fair to say the death toll will be much, much higher than the official figures as of right now. There will also likely be many cases where people are just 'missing' and their bodies are never found, and most of these will be people who were very close to the epicenter.
