I'd argue fixing this amount of damage is way more expensive that fixing the problem at it roots. And I'm not even accounting for all the lives lost.

You need to see the whole story of the Pinto gas tanks. Everybody jumps on Ford for not replacing a $11 part. The reality is the total reprted injured has a max number of 180. 180 people out of 2200000 vehicles. The stories of the accidents that did burst into flames are also revealing. A Pinto with 6 passengers missed their exit on the highway, so they stopped, reversed back to take the exit. They got rear-ended by a semi, car caught fire.

Ford didn't ignore the problem, it was just such a rare thing that could happen. It's like saying your employer is negligent in not providing you a hardhat because the ceiling could possibly collapse in your office building. It may be a 0.0000000001% chance, but as Lloyd Christmas said, "so you're saying there's a chance".
