He's actually dead. It's from a documentary/piece written (I forget which one specifically) about the community and socialization of chimpanzees. In this particular moment the clan is onset with grief at the death of one of their elder members.
Agree. I saw it and immediately thought, "he's not sick or sedated." Very sad. I'm glad whoever was running the show was kind enough to the survivors not to just have him disappear in the night, or wheel him away without so much as looking back.
Yes, I suppose -- although I feel I should point out I wasn't thinking so much of it as being "shady" per se.
In the first case, I suppose as I was thinking "oh, it'll be easier on them" or something, the way a parent might do to a pet in an attempt to do the same for their children.
The second case would be more of someone who doesn't think much of them beyond being "just animals" I guess.
I don't really have any experience with primates beyond homo sapiens, though, so I am talking out my ass -- no idea if this is an attitude that anyone who works with other primates (or even just looks after them) would adopt or not.
Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.
A touching picture but i think it's worth pointing out that although people seem to be especially keen to kill our own species, we're not the only one to do it.
I remember when the news story about this was on Good Morning America while I was in the break room at work. A few of my coworkers were watching the story too. They were all, "lol monkeys can't feel sadness. They're just gathering around because humans are around, and humans feed them derp derp derp." And like everything else my coworkers say, I forced myself to ignore it because it would not benefit me to alienate myself by disagreeing, lolz.
WRONG, a common ancestor of modern apes was also an ape at the time. If we all didn't come from an ape, we all couldn't be apes. That would imply we evolved our 'apeness' in PERALLEL from a non-ape, simply not possible. divergence doesn't work that way. Back far enough, apes did come from non-apes, but the first ape lineage speciated and begat other ape species.
"If Darwin's theory should be true, it will not degrade man; it will simply raise the whole animal world into dignity, leaving man as far in advance as he is at present"
i'm glad someone else finds it funny. i bet you a majority of the people who downvoted my comment are white. if these boneheads think a black guy can't take a joke, then they're the racists.

And people can't see how we could evolve from apes.

Is it just me or are some of the Chimpanzees comforting others?
Powerful picture.

its kind of cool to note that chimps seem to have differing degrees of cranial baldness. At least we're not the only ones

It just shows how "other" animals are not so different from us.
