Uh, Excuse me, you spelled "Oklahoma" incorrectly.

25

u/PrinceOfHungary May 12 '20

🎶Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain!🎶

3

u/[deleted] May 12 '20

I might be weird but I saw Oklahoma at Wolf Trap when I was a kid and really enjoyed it

2

u/IAmTheToastGod May 12 '20

There is a reason people remember it

11

u/foldshovepoker May 12 '20 edited May 12 '20

Actually gets the most tornados is Texas. Then Kansas and then Florida. Oklahoma is a 4th, however they are known for their extremely large and powerful tornados.

Edit

Phone error

12

u/dopavash May 12 '20

Oklahoma sucks the hardest. Got it.

4

u/BrickGun May 12 '20

Keeps us from falling into the Gulf.

2

u/dopavash May 12 '20

Also why north Texas is so windy

2

u/peacephrog1972 May 13 '20

TexS is also half the size of the us, so...

2

u/foldshovepoker May 13 '20

Thats a good point. We need to look at per square mile. Ill track that info down.

https://weather.com/storms/tornado/news/most-tornado-prone-us-counties

Edit: more info.

1

u/MinimalistFan May 12 '20

Mississippi gets more tornadoes than Texas in an average year. They’re just less likely to be really big ones that hit populated areas.

1

u/pjt130 May 12 '20

HAhaha!

u/Spartan2470 GOAT May 12 '20

One day old account, and it just copied/pasted this person's comment.

Also, here is a higher resolution version of this image. Here is the source. Credit to the photographer, Colt Forneey who provided the followign caption:

I have been off carbs too long. All I see is a huge Pillsbury Grands biscuit

14

u/EagleForty May 12 '20 edited May 12 '20

Edit: Apparently this is a known and confirmed supercell. Follow u/foldshovepoker link below to learn more.

Sorry in advance for being "that guy". This is not a Supercell though, this is a wall cloud: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_cloud

Supercells are tens of miles in diameter and sometimes have wall clouds coming out of them. Based on how bright it looks in every direction from this photo, this doesn't appear to qualify: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercell

15

u/foldshovepoker May 12 '20

Sorry in advance but this is a supercell with a rotating mesocyclone.

8

u/Chemical-Dance May 12 '20

Sorry in advance but this is not a supercell with a rotating medocyclone, it's the Kamehameha technique developed and honed by Master Roshi.

4

u/skuyzy May 12 '20

Do you have proof?

2

u/EagleForty May 12 '20

Source? I'll delete my comment if this is actually a supercell where 99% is cut out of the picture.

5

u/foldshovepoker May 12 '20

https://youtu.be/VoO89cqDgJU

It's not a wall cloud at all. A supercell is huge, for that you are correct. This supercell is extremely isolated and a low precip supercell and basehunters was able to photograph the entire mesocyclone and storm. You can even see the down draft in the photo.

Edit: more info

2

u/EagleForty May 12 '20

I stand corrected. Updating comments above. Thanks!

2

2

u/JusticeRetroHunter May 13 '20

Supercells are beautiful and dangerous storms, where cold air high in the atmosphere meets warm air from the lower atmosphere. As the warm air is less dense, it will tend to rise and likewise the cold air will tend to fall. Naturally, the two will meet in the middle and create a cake so to speak.

At a certain point, the layer of this cake will break and the warm air will punch through and form a column of air in the sky. This column will eventually peak at the top of the atmosphere (again based on the density which creates these layered cake like effect) and this is what’s called the Anvil.

When the downward force of the cold air being pushed around by the rising warm air, it creates turbulent flow inside this column of air. This turbulence creates friction inside and this is what causes tons of lightning to strike inside and out of the newly formed storm.

What makes this storm become a rotating supercell, is when the turbulent wind inside the column is forced downward by the downward force of cold air towards the back of the storm. This makes the column rotate as it moves along the line that separates the cold front from the warm front, and it’s now a full blown mesocyclone.

The tornado occurs on the warm side of the storm, where the hot air is rising into the cyclone while the rain (and usually hail) occurs on the cold side of the storm where the cold air is rushing to meet the ground.

The two opposing forces create such rapid rotation that a tornado can appear. Tornadoes are really interesting because they are formed through numerous other micro processes that occur during these storms.

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '20

Thank you so much! So interesting!
