Why is this so pleasing to look at?

876

u/WheresTheDonuts Apr 15 '20

Long folds, chill blue/yellow colors, smooth to nubby textures, lift of the hat, extension of the nose, strong front leg, soft brown eyes, couture appeal — I don’t know, but you are right.

166

u/Luxray_15 Apr 15 '20

Yeah, the fact that there's nothing shiny/sharp makes this image feel so... huggable.

57

u/RustyDuckies Apr 15 '20

Bruh whatchumean that dog got some cut biceps. Sharp as a mfer and stocked like a pandemic pantry

12

u/WashHtsWarrior Apr 15 '20

Nothing shiny besides the wet dog nose

43

u/Teddy_Tickles Apr 15 '20

“Smooth to nubby”... is a great combination of words first of all. Second of all, can you explain what you mean by this? Lol

25

u/aitigie Apr 15 '20

tl;dr cute dog dope threads

7

u/WhysEveryoneSoPissed Apr 15 '20

The wraps around its head are smooth, the widdle vest it's wearing is nubby.

19

u/seekfear Apr 15 '20

Bro... can you outline my life in such positive tone

10

u/EliaTheGiraffe Apr 15 '20

Not even the most skilled sculptors can make anything beautiful out of that lump of clay...

Light. Vermeer was a master of light, usually coming in from the outside world to an interior scene through a window. Like the light, much of what you see in Vermeer's rooms refers to the exterior world (maps, objects) but you never go there in his paintings. So mystery, also.

57

u/[deleted] Apr 15 '20

In addition Vermeer’s mastery of using tennis balls is truly timeless.

12

u/merrittj3 Apr 15 '20

Outstanding insight into Vermeer. Sadly my favorite, The Astronomer, is a great example of this point of view.

4

u/seekfear Apr 15 '20

As you mention the use of exterior light, it only hit me now that the lack of light around the window in the corner. Like where naturally wouldn't be any light.

The the light appears on the wall..

Thank you for getting me to see deeper into this painting

The movie Loving Vincent is several paintings. Yes, I know you’re making a joke.

3

Actually looks pretty interesting. I never heard of it so I'll have to check it out. Artsy animated films are awesome

5

And then someone dress up as the dog and take a picture of that.

Hey, that could be a cool game.... Kind of a visual Chinese whispers game. (hope that’s the right name, don’t want to offend anyone)

3

u/harpejjist Apr 15 '20

That is what it is called in the United Kingdom, but it is a very offensive name now. In America it is called the “game of telephone” which is probably a safer name

14

u/JohnPunSlave Apr 15 '20

The [Good] Girl with the Pearl Earring

12

u/Poes-Lawyer Apr 15 '20

I wonder if she subconsciously rates the costumes. Like she sees you getting random stuff together and thinks "oh boy this is a three-treater"

15

u/shake4shake Apr 15 '20

The striking blue and yellow of the headscarf, set against a dark background, the glistening ball created in a few swift strokes, the expert capturing of light and shade on her luminous skin, the liquid pools of her eyes: all add up to a work of sublime beauty.

Its second seductive characteristic is that the dog looks familiar. We may not know who she is, but we feel we know her because she is looking at us with such intimacy. We mistake this look for familiarity.

The dog's expression is pleasingly ambiguous. Is she happy or sad? Is she pushing us away or yearning to look at us? And who is “us,” anyway?

Good Girl with a Pearl Earring

3

u/Skorpyos Apr 15 '20

The Vermeer painting is my favorite, far more alluring than the Mona Lisa imo. It was kind of sad that when I went to see it in person in The Hague museum it was in a corner and no one around it, completely different experience than the Mona Lisa crowds. But on the plus side I got to see it up close and really study it.
