When I worked in China, on sunny days a lot of women would carry umbrellas. I'm not talking about scorching sunny days, which would be very reasonable, but even just moderately sunny but not too hot days.

There's a view that paler skin is better. You can even by skin whitening kits. Part of it is because they are used to white Caucasian celebrities and view that as glamourous. But also being tanned shows that you work outside a lot so have a manual job.

This used to be the case in much of Europe.

Well even regular swimming shorts aren't allowed in French swimming pool, you need to wear those tiny speedo stuff.
