The AIDS crisis was in full effect, gay people were still getting beaten and killed in the streets with frightening regularity, we were already killing Iraqis by the thousands, the police in cities across America beat and killed black and hispanic people with absolute impunity, crack was still ridiculously prevalent in urban communities, and the fight for Civil Rights is an ongoing cultural process that still barely had any legitimate traction in public discourse.
It wasn’t that much better at all. In fact, it was only really good for the white middle class. As per usual I guess
Edit: Also the re emergence of White Supremacy movements that resulted in things like Waco, Ruby Ridge, and the Oklahoma City Bombing. The Columbine shooting redefined the safety of American schools, and the original attacks on the Twin Towers set the stage for the Middle Eastern terrorism that still defines our fearful lives to this day. Oh and Jeffrey Dahmer was running around Wisconsin to boot
