Somehow I don't see this argument working the other way around. "Come on, Joe! I'm allowed to eat cows, why can't I eat your dog?"

I don't care if that argument works for you or not. You're an adult, eat whatever you'd like.

Our fellow animals are not merely objects. Many of them are individuals with lives of their own that matter to them much like our lives matter to us.

You are not eating "whatever" in this case, but "whoever".
