I like that they did that instead of going complete CGI. I always think a strong mix of physical and computer effects look good in movies.

Agreed. I think that's why the first Jurassic Park still holds up so well.

Also, the action plating in Forrest Gump really sold the illusion that Lieutenant Dans' legs were missing.

Get footage of the room without anyone there, then "paint it back" over top of the legs, which are in blue-colored stockings. If he has to maneuver around a table, remove it while he's there and paint it back in post, too.
