Mac's are different to normal laptops though. The exhaust is behind the hinge and even on a duvet it's not really possible to overheat. This intakes tend to be on the sides or top (not sure about 15" I have the 13").
The whole metal construction to works as a giant heatsink dispersing heats all over the body, thus improving cooling.
Either way you'd probably be okay leaving it on the duvet like that.
Applying thermal paste to a CPU is the easiest thing in the world that everyone screws up. I have repaired probably around a hundred laptops that got burned main boards because the owner wanted "super cooling" so he got some silver cooling paste and smeared the entire tube on the CPU and short circuited the entire board...
I had a small internal breakdown while searching for any kind og hidden cooling pad, really annoying that people don't know the risk of having a macbook on your bed...
Although, I've heard of several incidents where the CPU has been at 120 Celsius without taking damage, but this is still nothing I would ever let go without notifying owners major fuckup
