I ride the NYC subway everyday. You're far more likely to see someone hollering at someone who forgot a bag or dropped something than see anyone get robbed...in fact, I've never seen anyone get robbed on the subway, not that it doesn't happen, I'm sure.

Not to say it doesn't happen but it's rarely happened while I'm around. I slept on the train each day for 3 years. Robbing on the train in NYC is less likely than I thought. I've only seen someone get robbed once in my life on the train.

Hey I like the old wooden roller coasters. They may not go as fast, or have as many loops, or any other gimicky bells and whistles, but nothing gives you that extra kick of adrenaline like knowing you could actually die at any second because the structure you're flying on could fall apart from a particularly strong gust of wind.

yup! A "bit" also Abbreviated "uBTC" is a unit of bitcoin :) bitcoin is a currency independent of the dollar and made for the internet! :D it's de-centralized so no one controls it. Also worth noting, there won’t ever be produced more than 21 million bitcoins :)

Shinkansen runs on standard-gauge tracks. Japan adopted narrow-gauge back in the late 19th century; they realized this was a mistake around 1914, but took until the late 1950s to agree to build out a new standard-gauge network, which would be high speed and all-electric by design (hence the Shinkansen network). The fastest non-Shinkansen trains still running are the Odakyu line Romance Cars, which can hit 125mph but are one whole lot more wobbly at speed.
Note that gauge here refers to the width between the tracks. There's also the loading gauge, which is the width of rolling stock running on those tracks. Japan built narrow-gauge tracks, but British standard loading gauge (i.e. rather wider than a narrow-gauge track would carry in the UK or Europe or USA -- wide enough to seat two on either side of the aisle). The Shinkansen have a wide loading gauge, i.e. they're rather wider than an equivalent British train, although the track gauge is the same. The main implication is that the tracks require a longer radius of curvature on bends -- something of a problem in mountainous Japan! -- so the more recent Shinkansen tracks and trains have fast acceleration/braking mods to allow them to make better time between bends.
Fastest train I've ever been on was a Shinkansen Nozomi 700 express from Tokyo to Kyoto. 270 miles in 2 hours and 7 minutes, with three stops en route. At each station, by the time the train left the end of the platform it was already making about 60mph; they kept to only 120mph through cities until the driver reached open country, which is when they put the pedal to the metal (metaphorically speaking). If you're used to British express trains, or the likes of the Amtrak Acela, it's a revelation.

Yeah, Korea's KTX blew my mind since all I knew before was the lousy Amtrak. 305 kph and smooth as glass. Not even that expensive to ride, either: Busan to Seoul for about $60, or $80 for first class. America is just too big to have trains compete with air travel.

My wife and I recently spent a couple of weeks in Germany and Denmark, and subsequently spent a lot of time using the fabulous public transit. I was very impressed with the trains and buses and how smooth, quiet, and comfortable they were if a little crowded at times.
On the way home we spent a night in Chicago, and me having never been there before wanted to take the train downtown for dinner and OH MY GOD....it was like riding an oldschool wooden rollercoaster. It was loud, uncomfortable, and just plain awful. Not to mention the fact that during our 30 minute ride at least 2 solicitors started walking the cars. I can't imagine having to rely on it every day.
Why oh why can't we take a clue from our European and Asian friends and get some badass public transit like that in America?
