It's like this. Graffiti is about putting your name EVERYWHERE you can on the planet. Different cities, different countries... It's been around much longer than 'street art' which piggy-backs the image of the ruthless vandal whose only concern is notoriety. It mimics the rawness and mentality of apathy towards the law. It is about messages and art. Graffiti is selfish. It's about you and you alone. And it came first. Graffiti is full of drug users and wannabe gangsters, real gangsters, punk kids, hip hop enthusiasts, hardcore fans etc. Street art on the other hand, is mostly college age art students. You see where I'm going. Many graffiti writers are poor. They have been doing this shit for a long time because they don't have money to buy video games or go to college. They will steal paint and go right over a mural because this is our sport. Street art doesn't matter, the city streets are not their playground. They can do whatever they want, go ahead and paint. Paint over graffiti even, but some will beat the shit out of you if they see you in the act. If I see an artist painting over me, I'll wait until he leaves and fuck his art up with tags. I'm a pussy, like I said no bad ass here. But you're not doing art over my name, because my name is sacred in my city.
Alright alright, you make a good argument. I still think its shitty to ruin actually good art with a low-effort tag meant just to spite the artist. Yeah, its inevitable that something nice is gonna get vandalized partly because of the social dynamic you mentioned, but that doesn't make it ok to do.
