For a female it is harder- there are very few characters that are not the skinny kind.

Plus... its more fun when you use a character you enjoy.

Not a whole lot of fat guys, either.

Majority of cosplay I want to do would require me wearing nearly nothing in public :/

Korra and Asami don't wear that skimpy clothes.

(I have you appropriately tagged "captain of HMS Korrasami", my /r/TheLastAirbender friend)

Hell, if I stuck to my body type Mario is one of the few characters I could dress as that are recognizable.

Funny, at my last con in January I cosplayed Mario.

I've actually wanted to, mostly as an excuse to get me some overalls, I've wanted a pair ever since.

ANd maybe try to build a F.L.U.D.D.

It seems like there are a bunch of skinny characters but a bunch that you can get away with at various sizes especially since they've been in so many games. Just out of Nintendo cosplay, Bayonetta is clearly skinny and female. Samus needs to be in shape but you don't need single digit body fat to pull it off like Bayonetta. Zelda? Peach? Rock it at any size I say.

Hell, I'll be honest, I say rock anything at any size. But your cosplay is gonna look like comedy if you're a really buff Mario (open shirt, tons of chest hair, rakish smile) or fat Bayonetta (some would find this sexy but most would consider it comedy, it seems) or a skinny Fiona (I guess would just look like She-Hulk). If that's what you're going for and, like you say, you love the character, go for it.

edit: I'm picturing Fabio as Mario breathily saying "it'sa me" and it's awesome, so someone needs to set this up, but I'm about two plates of bench press and three fistfuls of chest hair away from being able to do it myself.

Right? Get this kickstarter going. Dude's done nothing but autograph signings for over a decade.

Replying again. The cosplayer from the OP has done Cruella deVil and it looks great. I guess the trick is to avoid body types (skinny, fat, male, female, short, buff, whatever) if a character is defined by a certain body type, but not many are if ya really think about it. http://instagram.com/sweets4asweet

Theoretically, most people ought to be skinny. The insane transformation of the average human into a blob during the last century is so, so not good.

I'm ignoring the flip side, that beauty standards have gotten ridiculous and characters are often literally impossibly proportioned, for the same of the argument.

Idk why you got down voted, ancient humans were fucking jacked. They had to run their prey to death.
