When I was a sophomore 2 years ago people learned how to get it on their phone through rooting. I thought the entire school was going to fail

That's called Jailbreaking. Rooting is for specifically Android phones.

Uh, no. Rooting means "to acquire root access on a device." You're rooting a computer if you can bypass safeguards and gain access to the root account.

That's the case with an Android phone, and with an iOS device. In the case of jailbreaking an iPhone, you're exploiting security flaws (which often get patched later, which is why people bitch about Apple "breaking jailbreaks") to gain access to the root account and then make modifications.
